Bikes: See my sig...

A fellow messenger was using a Denali / Medallist as his work bike since last summer... it was what he could afford when he started working.

He just retired the bike and said the biggest complaint was the wheels which could not stand up to this kind of hard daily use.

I figure he got his money's worth and saved up enough to get a really decent lugged steel road bike from another messenger.

Kind of strange see the Denali with those bars. And if the seat gives you trouble, you may want to lower the nose a bit.

Here was today ride. 19.08 miles - time 59 min 58 sec - Avg Speed 19.11 - Max Speed 32.7 - Total Ascent 413 - Total Descent 411. Was raining on and off during the ride. I like the rain, keeps me cool. Nothing to report. Shifters worked well. No Flats.

I'd guess he had 8,000 - 10,000 miles on the bike if he was riding as much as I was when I was a messenger.

I am starting to believe this is a throw together of several Walmart bikes. The wheel set is the same as the ones on the 700c Men's Schwinn Carbon Fiber-1000 Road Bike, and the handle bars could have come from any number of hybrids they sell. Thanks for the seat advice.

On the seat thing. You are wanting it to be level with the ground to start with. Then just do little adjustments till you fine the sweet spot for you.

When they 1st made the Denali (blue one) it was 7005. But later they changed it out with 6061. So unless you get one that has been setting in a warehouse it will be 6061 aluminum. And by the way the 7005 frame is stiffer, so you feel more road effects. So the 6061 will dampen road effects.

If you like a fast fit. That is to say the bars lower then the seat. Then yes it will serve you will. If your looking for a little more relaxed fit then go with the 25" frame (black One). What is you bike inseam?

Thanks.
The front wheel on my 1st denali took a 20mph head on into a teleaphone pole. And was still ridable after retruing it. So yes they are very durable.

Here is the ride I got in today. The shifters are still adjusted nicely. So did not have any problems with them at all. I did take a closer look at the freewheel and found out they changed them out with a 13/15/17/19/21/24/28 freewheel. I'll have to pull it and see who makes it. It is ramped and shifts a lot easyer then the Falcon on the old Denali. So thats a puls. I think it's a IRD freewheel but will have to pull it and take a look at the stamp name on it.

Todays ride was to a computer clients house, I do computer repaire, here in town.
miles 6.66 - Time - 20m 39s - avg speed 19.39 - Max speed 29.4 mph - total ascent 253ft - total descent 307 ft.

For a bicycle it literally doesn't matter. Don't worry about it.

Just wondering where one will find 700c tubes with Schrader valves? At least that's what was on the Walmart models, 700c rims tires and tubes with a Schrader valve...weird.

By the way Walmart doesn't sell those tubes!

You can put a 27" tube (which the sell at Wal-Mart) into a 700c tire. Some tube packaging even says "for 700c and 27" tires."

Walmart is not a bike shop? Weally? And no, not any bike shop will have those, none of the three in our town do and when asked about special ordering they looked dumbfounded...welcome to Fort Wayne Bike shops; none of the FTW LBS's will even deal with a Walmart bike, it's beneath them! Supposely due to impossible to get non-standard parts Denalli and the Schwinn that Walmart carried uses, and it would cost more then the bike is worth to convert over to standard parts when the non-standard parts fail. I don't own a Denali, I bought the Schwinn they use to carry last year for my daughter but took it back after problems; but it too had the Schrader valve 700c tires, that's what led to inquiry. Ended up getting a excellent condition used Cannondale that fit her from one of the LBS's in town and she likes it better then the Schwinn, and it's a lot lighter.

NONE of the LBS's even cared to mention that 27" tubes would fit in a 700c tire-go figure.

I'm looking to upgrade the shifters on my denali, anyone have any ideas on what shifters would work on the denali and what I would have to do/get to put them on. Would I need new handlebars since the ones on the denali are welded together?

I know it doesn't make sense to upgrade this bike but, I'm doing it for the learning experience and the mechanics of the bike.

Thanks!

99 bucks at WalMart for the blue Denali. Picked one up for my 12yr old. If he decides to really get into road biking then I will take him to the LBS and fit him with an Allez. If his interests change, then I've only spent a C-note as opposed to 800 or so on a new one.

go look up shimano rsx 3x7 sti shifters. They'll fit the gearing perfectly to the stock parts on the denali. After you get the shifters, you'll need to get brake and shifting cables and cable housing. If you want to get any other sti shifters, you'll either have to rebuild the rear wheel to a freehub, since the threaded cassette for a 8-9 speed is almost impossible to find.

As for the handle bars, you can just reuse the stock one, but a new dropbar off ebay can be found for around 20 bucks.

Sheldon brown's website, youtube, and the ppl on this site can give you the info you need in order to switch out the parts. The fun part that'll give you some trouble will be adjusting the front and rear derailers and the brakes after you switch out the shifters.

It looks like there 68mm x 118mm. I'll see if I can get Kent to tell me. That way I will not have to pull the BB form the bike.

After about 1500 miles the bb started making noise. So looked at the BB and found that the cranks could move side to side. So I had a friend replace it for me while I was at work. It's in the 1st post some where.
