I rode to work all five days this week. It was well over 100 degrees every afternoon (107 today). I'm definitely ready for a break in the heat.
I enjoy tracking my mileage, but managed to forget a couple of milestones that I reached this summer. I mentioned in my March Guest Blog at the Lungevity Foundation site that, sometime this summer, I expected to reach 24,900 miles (the circumference of the earth) ridden since my lung cancer diagnosis. I then forgot to watch for it, but I now have 26,570 miles since the beginning of 2008, so I have indeed ridden around the world since being diagnosed with lung cancer.
I also didn't notice it when I passed the 10,000 mile mark on the Stratus XP, my commuting bike. I now have 12,057 miles on it. That's still less than I have on my long distance bike, but it's gaining fast.

The ride home was a race to beat a fast approaching storm that looked potentially fearsome on doppler. A mile from home I felt the sudden rush of cold swirling winds that dropped the temperature immediately 10-15 degrees and raised the dust and leaves. Beat the rain and got a thrilling ride home. Bicycle commuting rocks!

A cool breeze this morning at 71F (22C). I attempted to extend the weekend last night, and I know better than to do that. So I was only half with it this morning. A runner came at me in the dark in the street, something I was not expecting. I did recover, and she said good morning. Actually, there were more people out this morning in the dark, than I can recall any time recently. I believe that people are starting to realize the shortness of summer, and they just need to get out.

The atmosphere sure felt like fall this morning.
Fast northwesterly (at my back) and temps around 60F/15C.
I had Pomplamoose in my head for most of the ride. Argh. Had to go to YouTube on my iPhone and watch it when I got in.

Congratulations on reaching those milestones, Bud Bent, and beating lung cancer. That is inspiring.
Uneventful commute for me this morning, which is good I guess. The relatively cool weather continues in NC, which really means that it is back to normal after 2 months of record-breaking heat. Hurricane Irene bears watching as the current projected path could take it right up the East Coast by this coming weekend. More incentive to log more commuting miles this week.

Somehow riding the exact same route to work today registered 15.85 miles to Fridays 12.7 miles. Route didn't vary except maybe by one side street, which doesn't account for over 3 miles. Weird. Anyways, very nice commute this morning. California mornings are exceptional! I just wish the sun was up so I could enjoy the view. Hoping nothing happens today so that I can attempt the ride home(Friday was a freaking debacle that got me a ride home instead of biking home). Still not looking forward to that huge uphill battle >_<.

My Polar monitor does that on occassion, I never did figure out why.

Uneventful commute in. I walked the first mile with my wife and daughter to the daycare.
-begin rant-
On the other hand, on my lunch break just now, I was walking (in my clipless shoes) back from the pharmacy on the right side of the 4-foot wide sidewalk when I heard, "Excuse me. Heads up!" in a tone which conveyed, "Move because I'm taking the right of way whether you like it or not." I looked up and saw a guy on a bicycle barreling down the sidewalk towards me. Instead of moving (further) to the side, I kept walking and pointed to my right, saying, "There's a bicycle lane right there, sir." (To my right is a beautiful month-old wide bike lane with paint so bright it hurts to look at on the new asphalt.) He yelled back at me, "I see it. And so f***ing what?"
He was out of range at that point but let's explore, "So what?" So, you are riding a vehicle and Georgia law says vehicles belong in the roadway. So, you are in MY (narrow) right-of-way, endangering me by moving towards me at a moderately high rate of speed. So, your explicitly designated right-of-way is just a few feet away. So, since you are doubly in the wrong, YOU should be the one to yield to me (to slow down and maneuver safely around me). So, finally, YOU are giving bicyclists a bad name with your rude behavior.
-end rant-
OK, I feel better. Thanks for letting me vent.

SLOW ride in this morning. I'm still sore from a race on Saturday and ended up treating it like a recovery ride. The weather is so nice here right now, there wasn't any sense in rushing anyway. I may stop for ice cream on the way home.

It was cool and foggy up on the ridge this morning. I almost started mourning summer's end before we even got to experience summer. It felt like fall.

Between a hot headwind and traffic, I was 10 minutes slower than usual.
I contributed to making the while car-free thing work by picking up the prescriptions during lunch and baby formula on the way home, so I guess I did have a little extra mass to slow me down.

Weatherwise, the commute today was typical for this time of year, 80's in the a.m., mid to high 90's in the afternoon. There was kind of a strong headwind on the way home but, other than that, everything went well. I am loving this commuting stuff! Hopefully Hurricane Irene will stay to the east of us and we won't get hit too hard.

Hi, new here. I started biking a couple of years back when I lived in NC. Went through a couple of life changing events that ended with me packing up and moving to East LA where I only knew one person. Life has settled down again, and I've bought a new Giant Cypress from one of my LBSs for commuting to work. I average 12 miles a day, and usual work 8-5, so I get the beautiful California mornings along with a healthy dose of sun in the afternoon. On my commute heading home I had 2 cars pull out of their driveways in front of me. (almost crashed into the first car)
Other than that I ride on a great trail for most of the trip, I love biking to work. I actually feel more energetic and happier since I started last week.

It was a cool ride in at 57F (14 C), but it felt good. The rides home have been wonderful, and if it wasn't for all the cars, it would be whimsical with the sun and cool breeze.

Nice this morning. 56F/13C with a light headwind & a few clouds. I saw one wild turkey, and later a great blue heron.
Also, Blonde Trail Hottie was wearing something that caused my heart to palpitate.

Interesting comparison between my commutes yesterday morning and today. Yesterday I had a headwind almost the entire way to work, but I got green lights at every traffic signal except one. Today I had a tailwind much of the way but caught every single red light except one. Guess which commute was faster? ... The one with the tailwind by 3-4 minutes.

Real wishy washy about the commute this week. I'm starving to ride but Excessive Heat Warnings through Saturday with it being 110 every day. But I think I'm going to ride anyway.

Great ride in this morning. I did need a very light sweater for the 13 C weather, feels more like Sept than August here in Southern Ontario.
For my own amusement I track my commute times and try to beat my previous times so it was cool today to tie my best ride to date with a time of 60 minutes over 28km. I would totally have flagged over the last 4-5 km if there hadn't been a teenager trying to catch up and pass me. I normally don't race anyone but myself, but something this morning made me want to stay ahead so I upped my pace. When I looked back to check traffic (which I do a lot anyway) there he was, pushing to catch so I upped it again to leave him behind. I did not however, give him "the look".
Cheers!
