Nice ride home with a bit of a headwind. Legs were a bit sore, prob. because this is the first time I commuted back to back, aiming for everyday this week in honor of BTWW. I did have a bit of a scare on the way home. Please don't laugh, but I felt like I was being followed by a beat up pick-up truck. I crossed a busy street and this truck turned and started following me very slowly and didn't want to go around me. I had a bad feeling, so I took the next right and went back around the block. The truck kept following me, I went back around the block, and he got held up by traffic at the cross street. I am sure it was nothing, but it gave me a bad feeling.

50 degrees with light winds on the ride in this morning. The usual south wind had returned by this afternoon, making sure I had a headwind for the ride home.

I veered off my commuting route on the way home to go 3 miles west for a stop at the Performance Bike store. I picked up a SRAM quick link there, then pedaled down the block to Half Price Books to pick up something to read on this weekend's DC trip.

Then I did some bonus miles south of Crowley, ending up with just over 51 miles for the day. I'm only calling 30 of that commuting miles.

First rain (more of a mist than actual rain) commute. It was cold and wet (darn summer). I made it safe though. Hopefully it doesn't rain again tomorrow.

Today was officially my last commute to college this semester. Fun and enjoyable commute in the rain this morning, heavy at times, and 49F with winds from the NE @ 8-10mph. The headwinds made for a slow ride home at 52F with scattered light rain and winds from the E @ 7-13mph gusting to 20mph.

Nice ride in at 63 F ( 17 C). It has been a very erratic rainy week. Torrential rain every day, and bright sun shine the next minute, then an alternating pattern. Hopefully, it all abates pretty soon.

Misty ride in this morning. As normal, didn't see another commuter. One street was blocked once I got into town so had to go around the block and get stopped by a few lights. Glad it was only misty.

Well, it's the third day of Bike to Work Week and I still haven't seen another bike commuter in Raleigh, NC. The weather has not been ideal, however, and I drove myself yesterday due to forecasts calling for rain all day (which didn't show up until about 9 pm). The rest of the week is looking nicer, so maybe some hardy souls will still venture out. Our big event here is on Friday morning at the State Capitol, so I plan to extend my commute by about 5 miles and ride down there for the free food, coffee and hopefully some schwag. Last time I went, I got a free t-shirt and head/tail lights.

Since I missed my commute yesterday, I went kayaking after work and that really wore me out. Due to all the rain and severe weather we've had here this spring, it was only the second time I've been kayaking this year, so I'm out of shape for paddling. Usually I'm paddling a couple days a week by this time of year.

No matter the season or weather it's always a nice ride into work but today was not so nice... I had a blow-out, first one in years. So I flip the bike upside down and remove the rear wheel, get ready to pull one side of the tire off the rim when I see that a 4" section of the tire casing tore away from the bead wire. I enjoyed taking my bike out for a walk for the last 1.6 miles (with an ankle sprain no less).

Bummer man... tough break. I haven't had that happen yet, but I've gotten punctures that were bad enough that the tube pushed through the hole after I patched it.

I broke the 90 minute barrier on my 21 mile route this morning. Average speed 14.3 MPH.

Fantastic commute this morning! About 50* and a mix of clouds and sun. I left about 10 minutes earlier and had less traffic to deal with. Also set a new PR this morning, I must be getting in better shape, b/c I am spinning faster without feeling like I am going out of control!

Hopefully I can actually tackle my hill nemesis this afternoon!

Yesterday afternoon I took a fall. I wasn't moving fast. Nothing damaged on me or the bike, but it was embarrassing.

This morning, raining lightly and 50F. I'm stiff, sore, and grumpy. Just imagine how bad it would be if I had driven.

First entry in awhile, about 48 and rain all the way in. Been riding almost every day since last post and closing in on the 1000 mile mark.

Decent ride home yesterday. Did have to stop once when the chaim came off the outside of the big chainring when shifting up to it. First it's happened in a couple hundred miles on the new LHT with the new derailleur. Might tweak the limit screw a tad.

Too warm on the way in. Already 65 and fairly humid for the ride in. At least I'm headed to the PNW and on an Alaska cruise tomorrow. I'll be able to escape the reality of the onset of DC summer for another week and a half!

One trail was flooded on the way in. Not sure how badly but as soon as I saw there was a big pool of water in the once spot I took an alternate route. Change of scenery was welcome.

hear ya. It can be quite annoying when a wind like that just won't relent.

I had a good ride in today, but wasn't feeling quite up to snuff. 45F, steady quartering breeze. I'm seeing many more bikers on the road these days.

Rain ended for now, but path and roads were wet this morning, temps were mild (low 60's). Took the hybrid again and the fenders worked great keeping the road spray away from me. Moderate headwind made it a pretty slow ride, however. Trying to get three commutes in this week, the third will happen Friday for Bike to Work Day here in the DC area. Hopefully the endless cycle of intermittent showers will be over by tomorrow.

Had a nice little surprise on my way home yesterday - my wife and 2 y.o. daughter decided to take a walk specifically to meet me on the way. They waved me down and I hopped off my bike and walked with them home for the last 1/2 mile.

This morning, 7C, sunny, and nary a breath of wind; a welcome change from the last week's worth of commutes.

Long boring story: There's a half-mile long construction zone on my commute route where the road is reduced to one lane each way and no shoulders. I've been using this stretch to try sprinting and see how fast I can go to avoid holding up traffic behind me too much. Today, I thought I was doing pretty good - in the big ring, spinning in the second to top gear (bike wouldn't shift to the smallest cog for some reason), and nearly keeping pace with the cars in front of me, though admittedly, I was falling back a couple of car lengths. I don't have a speedometer, but I figure I must have been doing at least 45 km/h (about 28 mph) in a 50 km/h zone.

And then a car passed me. It wasn't a particularly close pass - I didn't feel like I got buzzed or anything - but I was immediately ticked off. Here I am, heart, lungs, and legs working at capacity, all for the benefit of the motorist crowd behind me, and some ungrateful, unappreciative such-and-such has the nerve to pass me! Here I was expecting the drivers behind me to be open-mouthed in awe of my fully human-powered speed (flat ground, no wind), but no, I was just another barrier to their right to go the full speed limit. Of course, this pass came near the end of the construction zone too, so it was particularly irksome to me: why couldn't the driver wait just a few more seconds?

Anyway, I cleared the construction zone and slowed down to 30 km/h once the road opened up. The experience was a nice little ego check for me, realizing that just because I'm impressed with myself, doesn't mean that anyone else is!
