There are lots of young women riding around here and they're serious cyclists but they aren't the spandex wearing type that's going to spend $2k on a road bike and accessories. They'll spend $200 on a SS/fixed gear instead and ride in "regular" clothes depending on how you define that.

If you want to see some like-minded, spandex clad young women on road bikes, find some triathlon training club ride or better yet, get into racing. It's still going to be mostly men though.
Just one thing to add, I see more women at casual group rides than performance oriented ones. The ones that DO come to our faster Thursday ride are the ones that have been convinced to come by a friend/boyfriend and tend to compete, did compete, or are interested in competing, even if at a casual level.

Bikes: The always reliable kuwie

I see a handful of women about my age 30ish everytime I go mountain biking in the foothills and they are hardcore riding 3k bikes spande clad leaving my sorry butt in the dust but I think as far as commuting goes us "bike nerds" are mostly male.

I tried to think Happy Thoughts today, which wasn't difficult with the beautiful weather. How'd I do?

It isn't that my shoulders are hunched; the breeze was just puffing my shirt up.

I've seen the same 2 Dorises (Dorisii?) on my commute this week and last on the path that crosses the river on that red footbridge .... .. but most of the cyclists are indeed dudes . ..

Hey guys, how's it going. New to the forum and just recently purchased a 2011 Trek 7.3FX. This is a pic taken in front of the Alamo on the first day of fiesta this year.

Oddly enough I DO see more mountainbiking young women than on the road.

Cyclist5 you need to come to Ca. My wife races so I hang out with a lot of the other women who race too. These women are tough and hella strong. Sea Otter is this weekend. There will be several thousand women there.

Pave! (Apologies for the lack of an accent on the "e" - I'm not aware of how to do that)

You know you've reached the pinnacle of Fredliness when you start bringing along a spare bike.

I don't know...paisley bandana, ubiquitous MEC commuter jacket, reflector vest, fleece gloves, cross-country ski pants, plus the stuff you don't see: Velcro reflector straps on my ankles, trunk bag on a seat-post rack, mountain bike shoes...plus the fact that I'm using a cyclocross bike for brevets...what am I missing?

- Reflecive tape on your helmet and bike
- flat bar with big mirror (bonus Fred points for two mirrors) Extra bonus points for trekking bars
- I can't see from the pic, but the reflective vest should say "<=== 3 feet" (or "<=== 1 Metre" up north)
- The bandanna and glasses are too cool. Not Fredly at all. One could photoshop your head out of the context of the picture and you'd suddenly become "really cool mountain bike dude" where the missing information from the cut photo would be filled in by people's imaginations - the trailhead sign in the background, dog with matching bandana, really hot lady friend getting ready to set the pace.........

Not on my bike, but I am wearing my "infinite MPG" bike shirt! I'm pretty sure I road my Schwinn to my buddy's house the night that picture was taken too.

In addition items mentioned by other posters, you are definitely missing fender. What self respecting Fred owns a bike with no fenders?

Also, you lack an A/C system (read: spray bottle) and there is no Air Zound apparent in the photograph.

The bike and attached lights look distinctly storebought, and...dare I say...new.

(The above message is intended to be taken with a grain of salt. Any implications of tribalism are purely for entertainment purposes.)

Finally got one on the bike. Classic extended arm cell phone pic
This evening's ride home was fun. Blasting headwinds with gusts to 50mph with an approaching storm.
