Owwwwwww.....
I guess this is what I get for thinking I can just pop back on the bike after awhile off and cover 50+ miles in 48 hours. I know that's probably a laughable distance to most of you, but my knees are wailing at me. I blew them out training for Barcelona (a million years ago now, gah!) and for some reason my brain hasn't caught up that my body isn't 15 anymore
Still, I'd better look like Dara Torres by the end of this summer
Anyway, is this mostly guys here commuting? I'm just interested to see how many women are doing the daily slog?
I saw this tiny woman on a fixed gear puffing up the Brooklyn Bridge this morning - wearing tall Doc Martins and green tuxedo pants and a messenger bag the size of her torso! It could not have been comfortable!

I am sitting under a blanket with a heating pad. Please forgive my typing.
On the way home
1. 38F
2. Light to moderate rains
3. 20 mph headwind
3. No rain gear.
4. 31 miles home
I freaking froze and was having issues the last 5 miles just moving my legs. I stopped under an overpass to put on a poly exercise shirt and a pair of wool socks I was taking home.
My base layers were almost dry.
A little voice in my head was telling me to shorten the ride and take the bus. Someday I should start listening to it.
I ate almost 1400 calories in 15 min after getting home.
ugh

My commute last saturday was close to that. Remember the winds? I worked 13hrs and then rode into a head wind, good times.

beautiful ride in this morning- great weather, a bit windy but sunny and warmer than it's been in ages.
the ride home was great, too, but I was reminded that some people do not like to be passed on their bikes. Especially when they are on an expensive lightweight bike and fully decked out in cycling wear, which I sometimes am myself- but not for my commute. For my commute I am in jeans and on a relatively inexpensive hybrid bike with milk crate. I passed two separate cyclists in such attire and on such bikes and man, did they give chase with a vengeance. I think one sat on my wheel for a while and then shot around me as we were coming up on an intersection. I attempted to engage him in conversation as we were stopped at the light but I think he thought I'd passed him to make a statement- I really didn't- he was just traveling about 3 mph slower than I was as I approached and I lingered about 30' back for a while but then just wanted to get rolling so I passed him.
I let him go ahead of me at the light and let him set his own pace, which was then just a mile per hour slower than what I'd have been going on my own so I didn't pass again. But in so doing we passed another guy and suddenly he was chasing us down at the next light. I think it's that time of year.
I was glad I wasn't going all the way home but meeting some friends in Harvard Square so I was able to turn off and leave them to their little race. I know that otherwise I'd have been tempted to kick it up a notch or two and make them work real hard but the risk is that I'd have worn myself out and humiliated myself by so doing.

Interesting week of riding for me. Mornings mostly like today: upper 30s to lower 40s--say between +3 and 5C) with light showers here and there. Afternoons a bit more hair-raising with steady rain a couple of days and some clearly not-so-steady motorists (one dude buzzed me doing near 70 mph).
Yesterday afternoon's ride was a real prize though: bright sunshine and about 60F/15C. I finally broke out a pair of shorts! I'm not sure what was brighter: my neon-creamcicle orange Alert Shirt or my lily-white legs.
Supposed to be more of the same (but warmer) today. I have prepared for this eventuality by already putting in for a half day off...

5 out of 5 days this week: Sunny skies.
Temps today in the low 30sF. No wind. I got a stick or something in my chainring. I extracted it on the MUP at a road intersection. Meanwhile a guy on a bare-bones roadbike entered the MUP from the road. He was dressed like he knew what he was doing. He rode like it, too. I barely reeled him in, we were going about 23MPH. I started breathing hard so I slowed back down.
(Keep in mind I'm riding a 30+ pound dualie Trek with fat knobbed tires.)

Nice ride in, I showed the bike a little love last night and it seems to have paid off. I removed the wheels, wiped everything down, lubed the brake and shifter cables, cleaned the cable guide on the underside of the bottom bracket and lubed (made a huge difference, I had been having shifting issues and thought it was the rr. der and/or cable), inflated tires, etc. The ride was smooth and fast. I need to factor in some time to strip the bike down completely and tune up/clean/etc, this is not the time of year to be off the bike though. Should be low 70's for the ride home.

I saw the weather report for Colorado and the four corners, wow do I feel lucky with light winds and blue sky as far as the eye can see.
The temperature was –1 C but it is expected to be +20 by mid afternoon. Lots of layers to be carried for the return ride. It is difficult to decide what to wear with such a gain in temperature. Hang in there DataJunkie, spring should be there soon right?

Yesterday, it was some sun and clouds, cool in the morning and much less wind! It was nice leaving off the leg warmers for the ride out of the mountains on the way home.
I was a bit shocked; I did not think I rode that hard on my ride up the mountain in to work, but my Cateye said I set a PR for time and average speed.....I'll take that.

A beautiful ride this morning
This was my first commute since the beginning of winter. Back in late November I decided I wanted to commute through the winter (except for rainy/snowy days). I had all the cold-weather gear and had commuted a couple times when it was down to 27F, and I loved it. Then some rainy/icy weather came and I just never got back into it... until this morning. Yep, 4 months. I was very disappointed in myself.
Anyway, this morning made up for it. Low 40s and sunny, and I was worried about how I'd feel my first time back on. I do an 11 mile commute from Mount Airy into Center City Philly. I'm surprised; I made it in about 45 minutes, which is my typical commute time, and it felt so good. I'm just so tickled to be back on the bike; it's a helluva stress reducer. We'll see how the uphill commute back home is...

Finally! My first commute of the year! Yes, I'm a fair weather commuter and today was a great day to get back on the bike: 47F and not a cloud in the sky. Hopefully, this year, I can surpass my mileage of last year. I didn't do much spinning this winter as previous years but I did take a cross-fit class (cardio and weights) at my gym and we did a ton of squats. It is paying off -- I have so much more power now. Saw about 12 or so riders this morning -- all guys except for two other ladies, but I think they were just out for a pleasure ride, not commuting.

It is here. That is the problem. Early to mid spring is an interesting mix of winter weather and 70F temps.

Yep, I still rode in this morning. It was just raining sleet snow, nothing is sticking yet since its so warm. We're back in the 70's on Tuesday.
32F, calm and clear on the ride in - hardly any traffic in the suburban sprawl. My rear reflector popped off - broken. Glad I have a tail light.
Should be about 70F when I ride home - toting all that clothing from this morning. Gotta get some panniers for these Chicago spring/fall days. My little rack top bag doesn't hold much.

50F and drizzly. Trailered 4 yr old to preschool rather than riding w/ 7 yr old to letter school (as the 4 yr old calls it).
Usually my wife trailers her downtown and I pull her up the hill at the end of the day. In the am, going to the office rather than home, I didn't really have a route in muscle memory so decided on a particular way to get where I wanted to. Caught at a bunch of red lights in a different sequence than would let me go home on the same roads, and a bunch of right-on-reds later was on the exact road out of downtown I was intending to avoid. Oh well, got a couple less blocks of it anyway.

I took a 20km detour this morning and went for a nice ride through the river valley. I wish i'd brought my camera.

My wife had an early meeting this morning so it was up to me to get the kids to preschool. At breakfast my daughter said "Daddy, can we ride the bikes to school today? Please**********"
Well, how can you say no to that? So we put her on the trailer bike and my son rides his own two-wheeler. I didn't have anything pressing on my desk today so we were able to wait until the morning rush had calmed down. Just a mellow spin through Midtown. A wonderful way to start the day.

First commute of the year for me here in Buffalo, NY. 13.4 miles, a little under 1 hour. I commute one-way to save time, still lets me get an hour on the bike.
35F when I left the house, felt like the temperature dropped as I rode south. Regretted not using winter gloves and not covering my toes. The tennis shoes on platform pedals and lightweight cycling gloves let my fingers and toes turn into icecubes before the end of the ride. I don't know if it was the cold or lack of fitness, but I was a bit light-headed and seeing strange light patterns when I closed my eyes. I've been spinning all winter, and thought I was in decent shape.
I commuted on my MTB with a friend who has a $3K Look road bike. He was on a rest day before a race on Sunday, and I was still pushing my doctor-mandated upper HR of 150. Average HR 148 for the entire trip.
Need to work out the kinks in my logistics, arrived at work without my car keys (I drove in and left my car at work last night) or my underwear. I always wanted to be a commando! The wife drove out and met me for lunch so that I have keys.

Nice ride home. 60sF!
I took the long way home, through fields and woods and stuff. I tried this last Friday and got fouled up. This time I paid attention.
It adds 4 miles but it's a really nice MTB ride.
I stopped and took a picture of some cows with my iPhone.

Slowed up to a red light and a fellow on a fixed gear rolled up beside me. I don't know if it was seeing the FG that made me do it... but I started clipping out to put a foot down as if I were on a FG too, which is a bit different than clipping out on a geared bike (I was on my Volpe). So I fudged it all up and looked mighty silly. I didn't go down, but it was still embarrassing. Bluggh.
I suck at riding bikes.
