Nice ride. Fast. Tail wind. High 50Fs. I had just crossed a street and was sort of weakly accellerating. I think I had upshifted twice. Was going about 14MPH. Looked in my mirror and I was being overtaken by a technicolor roadie. We exchanged g'mornings and I let him go for a while, then tried to reel him in for fun.
(Again - I really wish I could get a group of fast commuters to ride with!) I never completely caught him (riding 20+MPH most of the time and slowing for stop signs) but I did get around him once we got into the city and I took a faster route to the main road. I beat him to an intersection. He turned and headed back the way we'd come from. Guess he was just out training, not commuting. (No gear on his bike, anyway.) |
I was part of a stampede on my commute this morning!
Just after dawn I was going down a small country road at about 18 mph. As I rounded a bend I saw 3 horses that had gotten loose. They were standing in the road, eating weeds along the side. They startled when they saw me coming and they started to run down the road. I moved over and just coasted but still caught up to them. The four of us were stampeding down the road together. I could look over and watch their flanks work as they ran. I felt like a cowboy riding in the stampede like in all those old western movies. When the woods ended, the horses cut into a field but still kept running along side the road with me paralleling them. They ran for a couple hundred yards then just stopped, and I kept going. Before I went around the next bend I looked back and the horses were back on the road again. What a way to start the work day! |
Good ride in this morning. Tempatures are slowly rising again and so is the humidity. I left a little later then normal so there was a little more traffic on the roads. Saw two other commuters though.
Looking forward to the ride home. |
Today was fast - hit more lights than normal. The other day, however, the strangest thing happened as I came home from work - I almost hit a deer on my bike!! Coming out from under a tunnel around 15mph a dear took off in front of me and I swerved to avoid it. I always watch for deer in my car, never thought I'd have a chance of being pummelled on a bike! By the way - MikeR, awesome story! How neat to be riding with the horses on the bike!

Light and easy until I hit the stretch between 57th and B'way. Many peds jaywalking caused a couple of near collisions. One jaywalking suit called me an @55-you-know-what to which I heartily replied that we was the one in the wrong. I guess peds don't see bikes, much like drivers. Then the darndest thing happend, the same exact thing as yesterday in the same spot: a cab tried to pull out at an extreme angle into the middle of B'way. He mocked my desperate "HEY!!!". Jerk. Somehow, despite the crazed swerving and braking induced by the above, I still made it all the way from 57 to 44 without hitting a red light.

Encountered the same group of road bikers this morning as I did last week -- same time, same place, same result.

This is my second week of commuting. I love it more than I ever thought I would.
My ride is only 5 miles, and my first day I took about 35 minutes to get to work. Today, I'm down to 20 minutes. I'm not focusing on speed at all. I guess I'm already getting stronger and more capable. Sacramento has some gorgeous bike trail running through my residential area. I passed only joggers and walkers today. I'm starting to recongize all of them! Yahoo for bike commuting! |
Today's Forcast: Scattered clouds with the possibility of an isolated thunderstorm developing this afternoon. Very hot. High near 115F. ESE winds shifting to SW at 10 to 20 mph. Chance of rain 30%.
What this means is a hot and dusty 15mph headwind. I can't wait. Al |
Nice ride in, low fifties, no wind, one squirrel that darted across the road and almost ended up under my front tire. The 92 degree temp later this afternoon ought to make for a hot, sweaty, fun ride home.
|
I was getting bored with my route to work, so I changed it up to avoid stoplights, and to add some miles and hills.
I think the respite from the heat and humidity is coming to an end. It's starting to get nice'n'sweaty again. |
I haven't checked in on this thread all week, but the rides have been great. Got a new Marathon Plus tire on the back this weekend and I haven't flatted out so far -- this is after two rear-wheel flats last week!
Rode home with a nice guy who works down the street from me yesterday - we were pushing it pretty good, hammering up to the intersections in order to make the lights, it was pretty much a complete blast. It just felt so good to stand up and pour the speed on for a stretch, making it through a new "goal" (green light that turns yellow as you're in the intersection) every mile or so. Today I must confess I'm hurting a bit though :) Gave a big salute and thumbs up cheer to the streetsweeper truck on the way in. |
The ride home last night was tough. Headwind most of the way home and heavy traffic. The Reds had another day game that let out just about before I left for home. The wind for some reason just about did me in, I was beat when I got home.
Ride in this morning was nice. Cooled down a little, but it wont last. Todays high is supposed to be around 89 and the humidity is getting high. |

What this means is a hot and dusty 15mph headwind. I can't wait. Al Ride home yesterday was pretty good except I got a big scare from a driver pulling some bizarre, boneheaded maneuver. Hard to describe the situation without a picture. PSA: make sure your brakes are in good shape! Ride to work was awesome. Some drivers were even accomodating. See? it doesn't have to be bad every day. :) I did have my chain slip off, though, when I went over a bump in Central Park. Easy enough to fix, and it gave me an excuse to have some water (no cage on my folder, and my commuter bag / hydration pack hasn't arrived yet so I carry a little bottle in my backpack). If not for that I might have gone non-stop from a light two blocks from home to the bagel shop near work (nearly 8 miles). |
Nice ride in this morning. We are in Burlington VT this week. Yesterday evening we rode out on the Causeway. This morning we rode from downtown to the offices in Colchester. Had a nice breakfast a Libby's diner. This area is more hilly than what I usually ride back in Denver. The temps were great, and there is no wind to speak of. The drivers are very good about giving room and I really like riding here.

Good ride in today. The wind was against me all the way but still managed an average 25km/h. It was raining too but this afternoon is supposed to be 24C and sunny. Yesterday was 32C with 50% humidity so it will be a nice break.
Have a great day! |
Weather was beautiful in Ireland this morning. Hadn't commuted in a couple of weeks & thought I'd feel it on the bike but the break didn't have any affect. looking forward to the trip (19km) home, couple of nice pints and a few tunes later too. No work tomorrow ;-)
Lorcán. |
I had a nice ride in this morning, it is getting warmer here in the ATL. Looks like it will stay that way for awhile.

Anyway, my commute this morning started at 50F. Very low humidity. I got to work and wasn't even hot. Sunny and pleasant. Tomorrow looks like it's going to be brutal. 90+F and humid. Lucky for me, I'm taking the cage to the dealer for inspection/oil change/etc. They give me a shuttle ride to work, so no cycle commute tomorrow. :( |
I haven't posted here for a while but my commutes have been great. I took last Friday off for a day ride (85+ miles). I've been getting extra miles in on all my commutes also. We are finally getting summer, hit 90 yesterday and mid 90's forcasted for today. Life is good!!!! I'm in heaven!
|
I had another great ride in. I'm starting to want a road bike more and more, noticing the difference in aerodynamics when I drop down low.
On the way to work this morning, I saw two guys standing around a broke-down car. After stopping to offer assistance, I notice it was a Corvette. It could have been one of a thousand things wrong, and another thousand dollars perhaps to fix it. It sure felt good to hop back on my cheap-O bike and continue my ride to work. |
My commute in was very desolate. One day I'm using hand signals because the bike traffic is so thick… yes I said bike traffic! Today, ten miles through the residential area and I saw two cyclists. Go figure. This morning was nice and cool. This afternoon will be a different story.
|
I tried to ride as smoothly and assertively as possible this morning: took the lane, flowed into traffic when necessary, made myself visible, and acted decisively. No problems and the motorists were safe and respectful.
|
My commutes are pretty much easy and uneventful. Starting out at 6:00 in the morning is probably the reason why. I hardly ever see anyone (1 or 2 riders) commuting to work. Living in Silicon Valley (San Jose) traffic doesn't usually hit the city streets especially First Street till about 7:00 or 7:30. By that time I'm in the safe confines of my cubicle. Afternoon is a little bit different. Still, pretty good commute. Weather is excellent right now. We'll see how long that lasts.
|
Same story, different day...nice ride in, thunderstorms possibly for this afternoon. Did get to ride in the rain yesterday, though.
|
Today was my first commute day in years -- my toddler's going to be 3 soon, and for some reason, I seem to have more energy in recent months;) It's also my first time to this site -- what a nice place! The commute's 7.5 miles one way -- I think that's 12 km (isn't the ratio 5:8?). I was expecting to feel worse by this time of the evening -- did notice some complaints in the knees, which seems to be a family trait, anyway. Definitely finding myself agreeing with the guy at the bikeshop who suggested some alternative seating arrangements! Part of the commute is near a busy freeway (it's 880, if you know the SF Bay Area), and I'm wondering about what I'm breathing in while I ride. But it was a beautiful day, the motorists were kind, and my kid wasn't left in daycare tooooo much longer than he's used to :(
