0C/32F this morning. I felt all right starting out, but for some reason was really tired by the time I got to work. It's not like my commute is very long (15-20 minutes, tops). I thought I had a nasty headwind, but I couldn't see tree branches moving at all :(. Maybe it's just the end of the week and I need a good weekend.

MIKEnDC 01-25-08 06:01 AM

22F/-5C going into about a 1-gear headwind most all of the way (my ride is almost a straight shot--save for a few side-to-side jogs). Pretty nice, really...:D

My green light mojo was short-lived. Yesterday I had green lights all the way to work and only caught one red light going home. I was cruising, except for the 20 mph headwinds from the NW on my trip home. It felt colder going home with temps in the mid-40s than it did going to work in the morning with temps about 32, due to the wind. This morning, it looked like my green light streak would continue as I made it through the first 5 signals without having to stop. Then the 5th light screwed me over. It turned red as I approached and then the sensor didn't pick up my bike, so I had to sit there through two light cycles. Same thing happened at the last light, the longest one on my route. It was 21 degrees. I went from feeling very comfortable to chilly sitting through all those lights, and on top of that, my water bottle froze so I couldn't even get a drink while I sat there waiting. I guess the red lights were getting me back for yesterday's good luck.

-15C when we left the house, but it didn't feel that cold until the downhill. Frosty cheeks for sure. No other drama on the way in, other than a fair-sized truck almost took out a pedestrian in the crosswalk. The ped was 100% in the right, and gave a hands-up "WTF?" as the truck turned in front of him with inches to spare. It's surprising [or not], given that a woman was killed in a crosswalk a week ago by a cement truck, and the police are keeping a well-publicized eye out for violators.

Beautiful ride this morning. Not much traffic and not cold. Unusually light traffic this morning. I have to make one left turn on my ride in and there were no cars in either direction to even have to watch out for or merge with. I can't remember that ever happening and I have been driving the same route for 2 1/2 years. My legs were a little dead after riding yesterday and then playing a double header softball game last night.:o

caloso 01-25-08 11:18 AM

Another wet and windy day predicted (including a NWS High Wind Advisory), but I lucked out with a relatively calm and dry ride in. At one point I caught and passed another commuter and she dropped in to draft me. At a stop light near work she thanked me for the draft and wished me a good morning. That's a nice feeling.

Brisk, baby. 18F

25 mile RT commute today, overcast with some showers in the am but very mild under cloudy skies on the way home. Beautiful sunset over the coastal hills was a nice way to finish off the week.

JoeyBike 01-25-08 09:22 PM

Drizzle on the way in....hammered on the way home. Lightning, sideways rain, the whole deal. And, a public bus stayed right on my "bumper" the entire 3 mile run from the French Quarter to City Park. Only breathing room I could get was gained by running red lights or when he/she dropped off a passenger. Maybe he/she was running interference for me as he/she showed no interest in passing me. Glad that's over.

I have posted this on the Gore-Tex thread, but here's my ride today. I have been riding into SF during this rainy season and I have a 22-32 round trip commute from Daly City to SF downtown. It was raining hard all day yesterday and I was using my $300 Goretex raingear (pants and Jacket). They were working good for awhile until 30 mins into my ride, water started seeping into my Gore-tex fabric. Luckily I was warm enough during my coummute, but as soon as I got to work, I was drenched, soaking wet and cold! Luckily there was a shower stall at my work and I had it to take a hot shower before work to keep myself warm and prevent from getting sick. It was a horrible commute on the way home as well.

I went to Performance to see if they had any rain gear, but other commuters got to the rain gear I wanted so I went to Target. I found a rain gear set-up, top and bottom, by Eddie Bauer for $29.00 (at the camping section)! It had mesh and nylon lining, well ventilated from the, back, armpits and the velcro wrist straps. outer fabric I think were made of synthetic rubber and nylon. The hood and neck is well protected and formed symmetrically well around my head. For $29, I thought I'd give them a shot since I couldn't find anything that day and my Gore-Tex raingear were still wet from yesterday.

So today was a perfect day to give my gear a test since it had been heavily raining all day. As for my gloves, I used latex gloves over them. I used my clear anti-fog tactical (ski) goggles ( $20 from Galls) for the harsh condition today, my clipless shoes had the all weather shoe cover from Performance and my sporty long johns from Target. I was ready to go. I suited up, put my hood over my baklava, then my helmet. At 130 pm, I was out on the road and it was raining hard, the streets were flooding, and the winds were picking up light debris. So 30 min. into the ride, the rain pounded into my $29 raingear, but it was keeping the water out and I was staying warm and dry! My goggles wasn't fogging up either and visibility were still good. I was having fun like a little kid playing out in the rain. When I got to work, I was dry from head to to toe (except my smiling face)! I had a great ride. I couldn't wait to finish work and do it all over again. Luckily for me, it was still raining and my adventure continues. It was a great ride as well.

I was greeted with a beautiful 1/2 inch of fresh snow at daybreak. Wonderfully peacefull, quiet, and serene. Doesn't get much better!

Versa2nr 01-26-08 10:45 AM

Was a bit more of a trial today than it has been. Of course it mgiht be due to breaking in a new rig. Still trying to get the bike fully dialed in. Different setup than the last commuter but it is a lot faster. The only thing is that the chainrings are really flexy. I might actually try to salvage the cranks from my old setup. Looks like thins thing has stamped steel chainrings. Wooooo flexy!!!

jostan1 01-26-08 08:00 PM

ok

slight dusting of snow. 14degrees. had to ride the mountain bike because of my nearly slick tires on my new FX. got home faster than it takes me in the car today......

Sounds like a great ride!

Much of my commute is like me...car free.

Cold for south florida... 51 with a breeze... was actually coldest after the train, was sweating under my jacket, and breeze was tough... All you snow riders are insane....

tarwheel 01-28-08 08:10 AM

Those pictures from Saskatchewa (Canada?) make my 25-degree commute this morning look pretty wimpy. In fact, my ride was downright pleasant -- no wind, clear roads, light traffic. Only problem was that I forgot to change out the batteries in my headlight that were getting pretty dim on my ride home Friday. So I had to turn around after heading down my street a short ways, go back home and put in some new batteries.

DataJunkie 01-28-08 09:14 AM

It was 60F yesterday. So, the ride in this morning was warm. Around 40F.
Apparently I have forgotten how to dress for that temperature. 10 miles into the ride I had to remove a shirt.
6 miles later I removed my jacket. It was nice riding in a jersey and warmers.
I am riding a longer version of my commute today due to the temps and the business trip I will be heading on tomorrow to frigid Milwaukee. Going to use the hotel fitness center if I have time.

marin1 01-28-08 09:45 AM

It was -31°C this morning, -49°C with the wind. Decided not to ride in this morning.

vtjim 01-28-08 09:54 AM

Down around 15F this morning. A wee mole scurried across the MUP in front of me. I saw 2 people in 5 miles. Supposed to warm up nicely today. Sunny, too.

Spent the weekend in Montreal. Seems like there are a lot more winter riders than I remember from previous visits. Where we parked for the weekend (Doubletree at Berri and Sherbrooke) had a whole stable of bicycles locked up in one spot. :)

caloso 01-28-08 11:18 AM

A beautiful morning, crisp and dry for the first time in recent memory. And apparently it won't last: more rain on the way.

I bailed on a training ride this morning. Didn't sleep well last night. I shoulda just drunk more coffee and gotten my butt out of the house. Oh well.

Intheloonybin 01-28-08 11:20 AM

Was really warm compared to last week!

35°F this morning when I left. Had to try to remember what to wear at that temp. Felt faster with less layers- it was nice.

It lasts until tomorrow night when it goes back down to -10ish overnight.

pinkrobe 01-28-08 02:03 PM

A little chilly this morning, -32C with windchill down to -48C or something stupid like that. I threw on some old snowboard pants 'cause I was dumb and left my regular bike pants at work on Friday. I have to say, the pants were okay, but not that great. The things that did work were the pogies I made, and the shoe covers. I wedged in some fleece material between my shoe and the shoe covers, and I my toes were surprisingly warm all the way in.

My wife is the true champ - she just put a down vest over top of her regular fall/winter bike wear, and that was it. She just wears regular mtn bike shoes with mesh toes, and didn't feel cold until about a block from her building. Truly, a burly girlie.

aMull 01-28-08 03:42 PM

^ Hardcore. What headgear do you wear?

trombone 01-28-08 04:13 PM

My first commute on the new bike! It seemed fast, but I'm not sure if it really was, or just that I was having fun. Couple of the hills were a bit more of an effort - had to get out of the saddle. But it's fun to ride; it has wider bars and fatter tyres than my other bike, so you can throw it around much more.

Can't wait until it's time to go home!

joshandlauri 01-28-08 07:13 PM

Kinda sucked today, made it 2.5 miles, got a flat, i was prepared with a new tube and patch kit if needed, then i found that my $13 pump from target, some how even though its suppose to, won't slide over the shrader valve, called the wife and i got to work 15 minutes late. woo hoo. BTW, at lunch I bought a new different pump and mad sure it fit before I left.

robtown 01-28-08 08:28 PM

I had to drop off our newly acquired used car for service. The half mile walk is a bit boring so I took the wheels off my Miyata and took it along. The trip up to the office and back was much more fun than last time. The shop guys came around the counter to check out the bike - turns out they are avid riders.

vtjim 01-29-08 07:43 AM

Down near 10F/-12C with a light headwind. Saw a little black and white cat.

Tomorrow morning, I'm doomed. 20MPH headwind and rain. 40F/4C though.

Sixty Fiver 01-29-08 07:50 AM

Yesterdays commute was pure unadulterated evil... the roads were impassable in many places and the temperature with w/c was -46 C.

I like evil.

Itsjustb 01-29-08 07:50 AM

Weird day to judge what to wear. Temp was almost 50F when I left, but winds of 15-20 mph.

I guess I got it right, I was a little sweaty when I arrived but the fingertips weren't real cold.

Normally I work from home Thursdays, but I think I'll make it tomorrow. The forecast calls for sustained winds of 20-30 mph with gusts over 40.
