One heck of a wind today. Hard and strong and still gusty. The wind was from the west and i was heading north into the city. I literally had to lean into the wind at points. When i hit the city i had to travel east so this brutal strong cross wind turned into a brutal strong tail wind :) I was literally flying down this single lane road doing 50-55kph. this was a construction zone for pretty much the entire length which means, i was actually speeding (50kph limit). Well guess what, every single cager still passed me, i think they calibrate their speed based on the cyclist. ie they have to be ahead of the cyclist regardless of speed/road conditions.

The morning commute was pretty wonderful. Sunny and cool. It was around 90 this afternoon and I got a ride home ::blush::

1005 Miles on an A320 with 155 people sweating all around me.

I miss my Stridle.... We are together again after my reverse 1005 mile A320 commute on Monday.

I rode into Naha from our my base (Kadena) in Okinawa about 40 miles round trip. The traffic is so bad that I was passing cars. The good thing about Japan is that we get to go to the front of the traffic light.

Much-needed commute. It was one of those rides that just makes stress melt away...I got on the bike, found a good cadence, put my legs on autopilot, and spent a peaceful 20 minutes watching the sunrise and all the cute little songbirds on the path. I love nature!

girljen 07-13-08 06:50 PM

The ride home was icky. I forgot my shorts. NOOO!!! I was thinking of asking one of the EMTs to let me borrow some trauma shears so I could cut my jeans off before I left...hindsight being 20/20, I probably should have done it. 90* in long jeans is no fun.

Big_e 07-13-08 08:59 PM

Did 24 miles on my MTB in 93 degree heat. I ride 9 miles, one way, cutting through Downtown from my house in Oak Cliff just to get to my favorite bicycle trail.

Ride wasn't too bad this morning, took a more relaxed pace, as I didn't feel rushed. Forgot to grab water, also forgot to eat breakfast, so I feel pretty terrible right now, but the ride was nice. It's cool out this morning. Saw more cyclists then usual. Was encouraged.

Cool (69 deg) and rainy this morning. I waited until a little after 6 am in the hopes that the rain would pass, it only slowed so I decided to go for it. Of course, without fenders and rain jacket, I was soaked within the first hundred feet. But, I enjoyed it nontheless. Kept my speed to down so as to avoid skunk striping as much as possible and spun in order to give my legs a little break (awesome day of mountain biking yesterday). Upon arriving at the rack I notice someone had taken my usual spot, oh well. I left the Surly in the parking deck to drip dry, I'll show it some love this afternoon.

70s this morning, with a bit of humidity, but not bad. I took both weekend days off, and feel better for it. Loaded up the panniers this morning, since I needed to bring in this weeks towels and stuff, but it was still a nice quick ride. Back is doing much much better, so hopefully tomorrow's chiro visit will be the last one for a while!

girljen 07-14-08 06:22 AM

I went to get coffee. It was a fiasco. I forgot part of my thermos and got coffee all over the place. Now I will exact my revenge on that @#$% coffee by drinking it. Other than that, the ride was fun.

Another beautiful happy fun ride to work.

Yesterday was my most RIDICULOUS commute ever. At least a part of it.

On my way back from work I went by a grocery store and loaded up on groceries. Well, it turned out that my wonderful new 40 L backpack is not quite as large as I hoped it would be...

Long story short, I ended up riding home with a stuffed backpack on my back, three plastic bags dangling from my left hand (I had to clutch them really hard since they didn't have handles! don't ask...), and with a saddle about eight inches lower than I normally want it to be, because I felt that with the cumbersome handling due to all these plastic bags (could hardly reach the brakes) I really wanted to be able to touch the ground with both feet. And that's after I ATE some of the stuff on the spot so I don't have to carry it. :D God, was it ever funny! Took me almost half an hour to ride 4 kilometres (~2.5 miles) from grocery store to home.

neilfein 07-14-08 06:43 AM

A little rain, almost missed a train waiting for my egg sandwich to go.

ISaacG 07-14-08 08:29 AM

Day 2 with my computer. I hit 55kmph/33mph :D And averaged 22.0kmph
I needed to transport two textbooks so I brought my knapsack. I hate it. Racks are so much better. And now my back hurts.

pinkrobe 07-14-08 08:51 AM

Decent ride in, very good temperature...

HardyWeinberg 07-14-08 09:41 AM

Nice and fast. Must be summer, 50F felt a little nippy.

First commute on the brand new Jamis Aurora... it's such a HUUUUUUUGE difference from my Huffy mtb. I'm in love with this bike.

:thumb: That is how I felt when I got my Aurora. I can't even ride my old hybrid anymore, its just so much more fun.

Nice ride this morning. About 60F. Light headwind but not bad. Someone came out on the MUP behind me but I was going faster than the person wanted to go I guess. I caught up to a guy on a hybrid and rode with him at a relaxed pace. Like 14-16MPH. We passed a couple of other riders including some dude in work clothes and wearing what looked like a pith helmet. :D

rlrct 07-14-08 03:14 PM

Hi 60's and raining this morning. The bike racks were really empty at work. The ride home will be around 80 and dry.

making 07-14-08 03:21 PM

Nice ride home. Had a chance to talk to another commuter, for about 30 seconds until the light changed.

77midget 07-14-08 04:05 PM

Fantastic! Seriously, this was the best afternoon trip I have had in the time that i have been commuting (since end of May). After pushing it hard a bit last week, I took the whole weekend off from biking, but spent time on refining my calorie/diet stuff, and relaxing.

For the first time, the long hills that I have on the way home were not an issue. In fact, this was the first time that they did not require me to slow down or coast when I reached each plateau!

All in all, a great ride!

rmputnam 07-14-08 04:16 PM

Do you ever wish you had something less upright and more "roady"? I'm new to commuting and have hills to face on my ride in. I'm thinking I need enough speed to make the uphill. I've just bought a Cannondale Adventure 400. Very comfortable, but I haven't had the nerve to tackle the commute until I've put in more hours and more hills. I'm afraid I've bought too slow a bike.

Just curious.

(Probably doesn't help that I've added a rack, trunk, panniers, heavier tires, and Slime liners since then, too...)

Today's commute was great; warm-ish morning, no traffic, and I found a much more pleasant route to work. That, and of all things, I had a *tailwind* today! I haven't had one of those in a long time...

Okay, I'm trying to figure how to make the previous message show. Let's see if this works.
I'm wondering how you like your commuter. Do you ever wish you had a more "roady" bike instead of the "upright riding position"? I just bought a Cannondale Adventure 400 and I'm worried about speed (at least enough to take the hills on my way into work.)

robinthehippie 07-14-08 04:36 PM

Off work today, trying to get used to being awake during the day and getting acclimated to the heat since I'm switching from overnights to an early day shift. It's really pleasant riding first thing in the morning when it's still cool, the rest of the day was admittedly rough with the sun and heat. I only did about 13 miles, but I got all my errands done so I'll consider that a win.

caloso 07-14-08 04:37 PM

We never have tailwinds here. Either I have a headwind or my legs are having a great day.

jterribili 07-14-08 06:24 PM

nice commute in this morning - a little humid though. Woke up late so had more traffic than usual. Made a road trip to the Charlotte office this afternoon so I didn't get to ride home in the rain - BOOOO!

Taking the train back to Raleigh tomorrow and will ride home when I get to the office and take the rest of the day off - working all night - BOOOO!

girljen 07-14-08 08:04 PM

The ride home was very interesting. There were so many more people on the path than normal!

A group of boys on BMXs riding three abreast tried to play chicken with me. I gave them the Mom Look (you know, the one that precedes the lecture and punishment) and held my line. They scooted over.

Mr. Nice Pedestrian, an older guy who walks eastbound on the path when I ride home westbound, said hi to me. We'd been waving and smiling for the last few days.

There were more dog walkers than normal, which was fine with me because their dogs were well-behaved...and really cute.

And may I just say, hooray for sexy roadies in spandex!
