Fenders for a front sus'd MTB?

You got it, another fender thread. I need fenders for my HardRock. I found various "splash gaurds" for MTB's but I need real fenders. Does anybody have any suggestions?

I use a real fender on the back, splash guard on the front. This works pretty well, but I'd love to figure out how to get the full front fender on too.

Hi Steve,

I had this on my Gary Fischer Tarpon when I bought it. They worked fine and looked nice with that particular bike.

The central part broke on a fall, my lbs had a replacement piece, but it broke off again. Now, I don't use front fenders, and use my rear rack as a rear mudguard. I try not to ride my bike on heavy rain though.

My Koga Trekking bike came with mudguards on its suspension fork..
the lower end of the slider was machined , drilled and tapped to have a place for the mudguard struts..

Trek Navigator 2.0 have a fork with a threaded hole on the back of the lower portion,
strut had to be bent 90 degrees right there to go back to meet the fender edge.

top arch holes ? the L bracket can attach there..
It's where I attached the Fork crown type headlight mount also, on my Koga,
for the hub dynamo light system.

by the way , perhaps you can fabricate some pieces to go under the QR skewer

add something like front pannier racks, and then fit the mudguard struts to the rack.

Yeah, most trekking suspension forks take standard fenders quite easily.

also, if you're a hands-on guy, this seems like a somewhat elegant solution for a cheaper non-trekking suspension fork.

SKS with the approved breakaway clips. extend the bolt from the disc brake mounting bracket and make a metal clamp for the other side. the just put a small grove into the fender if it doesn't totally (it may clear depending on how much travel you have.)

I have been satisfied with SKS shock blade fenders. I wear waterproof hiking boots and rain pants so Im mostly concerned with keeping splash out of my face.

The top arch normally has a hole to which you can bolt reflectors, fenders etc. Likewise, there may be eyelets near the dropouts for mounting the stays of normal fenders. The fender will move with the suspension.

I started a thread about that in the mountain bike forum. I'm too lazy to post here but I linked to some Zefal and Topeak fenders.

If there isn't a hole in the arch, just use zip ties. And if there aren't any eyelets, get a set of P clamps from the hardware store and just use those.

Alright, you guys inspired me to tackle the front fender problem. It turned out to be quite easy - I just combined a couple of rubber friction pads with a strip of galvanized steel strapping for plumbing (on the fork leg that had no eyelet) and it works great:

Took it for a 30 minute spin in the rain and the difference is quite noticeable - way less mud and crap on my shoes and drive train. Success!

Curious, if you have tried, the bolt head on the bottom of the fork, could be Used to mount a fabricated bracket to mount the Mudguard strut..

its those bolts that hold the fork top and bottom and core parts together .

Mainstream, Shorties , in the style of MX Motos, go in the fork crown, high above the tire using a plug in the steerer tube bottom.

...

Those bolts also keep the oil in the fork. You would need to be able to seal them somehow, tricky since the heads would be sticking out and the struts would have just a tiny bit of movement.

um no, sorry if I spooked you. I forget how I came across this thread cuz I usually stay away from old threads. but what you did there at the fork bridge was good & I had not seen that. looking at your other pics I see you used a clever device for the right front fender stay. this past fall I installed fenders on a similar bike & my solutions were not as elegant or as smart!

my fork solution (same as Mr. Hairy Legs)

my front fender solution for that fork bridge

does that right clamp ring on your front fork ever move? do you remember what exactly it is? THANK YOU

got them on, thanks again

one side was very fast to do

the other side took a little more time because I had to relocate the magnet & get the padding just right. but I'm very happy that they are not wrapped around ea. other anymore

thought this might be a lot of distance but actually the computer seems to work just fine

added some super glue to one side of the screws cuz I had it handy. but honestly the screw tightened up pretty good. I highly recommend this product!

the clamps come in 3 dif. sizes. I measured my fork with a cheap plastic caliper & bought the 34.5-37.5mm units. I did use the white plastic spacer/bushing that came with them

SKS Bicycle Suspension Fork Fender Stay Attachment Clamp sold by Planet Cyclery on Amazon $8.95

much better look than the ones I made. the only feature that mine had was an offset to one side. but I twisted the new ones to the outside a smidge & so there is some (angled) tension on the stay's quick release, but hoping it will all hold up to my riding
