I think you are right about that. I remember there was a stick in the road and I moved over towards the curb to avoid it. Good point. I'll have to hold my line next time.

I'm the only bike commuter on this very very calm, very very low traffic rural road, on some mornings I see less than 10 cars on the 18 kms stretch along the Yamaska river, I recognize almost every car that goes by so it MUST be a new guy.

That is fair. I miss living in a small town where you know everyone and their cars.

another awesome day. 74degc, mostly sunny. Lots of folks out on the bike lanes, in fact it's setting records:
Vancouver bike lanes boast record summer cycling traffic | Metro
(With municipal elections set for November, the City has installed bike counters to justify all the $$ they spent on bike lanes.)

A very nice ride in today. I found someone's ID along the way. I will put it in an envelope and mail it to their house.

I wimped out 2 days in a row.
Yesterday, I woke up at my normal (for this week) 5am but I must have had a bad sleep because I was really groggy as I helped my wife get to her 6am shift. After dropping her off at work, I went back home (as usual) and, still feeling groggy, I decided to just relax and take the car. Wimp Out No. 1
Today, I woke up feeling good but it felt cold outside so I put on tights and a light jacket and rode in. It turned out to be much milder than I thought so that was Wimp Out No. 2 for overdressing.
Have a great long weekend everyone!

I left 45 mins later than usual this morning - amazing how the same route is different at a different time of day

Rode in 4 days this week, which is a record for me. I'm starting to see more regulars particularly in segment across the Williamsburg Bridge.
I did yell at a woman which soured my mood for a bit. She pulled out from the curb right in front of me. This is the exchange that followed through her open window:
Me: YO!
Her: I see you!
Me: Then why the **** did you pull out in front of me!?
Boggled my mind for a few minutes.

I did just that last year with a young woman who changed direction as I was passing her. She was fine - I broke a finger and had a pretty serious concussion (with a helmet). Yelling "on your left" is a waste of breath - I have a very loud bell which I ring prodigiously and keep saying I'm going to get an air horn!

I almost had a collision with an obvious bike newb last week after calling "on your right" (I don't normally pass on the right but he was hogging the left side riding under 10mph and swerving slightly). As I came up behind him I called "on your right" and he immediately swerved right into my path almost making me collide with bridge guardrail on my right. I think some people can confuse "on your right" with "get to the right". That's the only explanation I can come up with.
For me, therefore, a bell, or just calling/yelling out "Passing" is a better idea (none of which work on a headphoned person).

I'm one of those people for whom left and right are commonly mixed so one time, I did the reverse of what you had done, intending to indicate that I was passing on their left, I called out to the joggers in front of me, "Passing right!" but I was fortunately far enough behind them when they moved as I had directed to be able to swerve to the open side and pass them.

Much warmer and much more humid today. But September is on its way.
Traffic was noticeably less this morning. Folks must be taking off for a four day weekend.

WOW! Today, the ride in was just amazing. It was one of those rides that I didn't want to end; perfect cool temps, sun shining, and I had some nice conversation with a fellow commuter for a couple miles before he turned into the train station. I cant wait for the ride home.

The last 2 afternoons in a row, I've seen a guy with one pedal. His other foot rests on the downtube.
This morning was cooler--I wore a long-sleeve shirt, but didn't really need to.

It was a bit cooler this morning. But a nice ride, a friend caught me, in their car, and we had a nice chat up a hill. I actually had to tell him to go faster.
jrickards I wear tights and long-sleeves year round. for warmth in winter and to ensure my pasty skin stays pasty in the summer. I can't be a lab monkey who looks like he goes outside, it would ruin my image. I typically wear gloves until I left them at the beach and have not found a suitable replacement. I also will wear ear flaps as a sweat band in the summer, not all the time, just most of the time. I look like freak show is what it comes down to. So I do not think it is wimping out, it is always better to be over dressed.
I had a nice ride home on my new bike last night, beat a lot of my PRs on the way home, until the rear shifter wouldn't upshift. I got stuck in big big cross chained spun out at 20 km/h. I got repassed by a few people and limped home. I am glad it is a long weekend and I can redo the cables and clean the mechanism; it is a sticky mechanism or a fray cable end in the housing.

There is a Velominati Rule about tan lines (scroll down to No. 4), so you're avoiding the whole challenge I take it, eh @joeyduck?
BTW, does anyone have a link to the Velominati Rules, I went to Velominati.com and there is a link to "The Rules" but it is empty.

I just felt like a wimp because this spring, I was wearing shorts on my legs at +2C to +6C temps (more clothes on top because my upper body does less to generate heat than my legs) and this morning, it was +11C; I shouldn't have needed the extra layers (in the end, I was pretty sweaty when I arrived at work).

I think that would apply if I tan. So my logic goes: I do not tan therefore rules regarding tanning do not apply.
It also makes them feel worse when I pass them!
I understand that feeling of the weather, but it is all about acclimation, in the winter you are used to cold, 6°C is freaking HOT in relative terms. The summer you are used to HOT, 11°C is freaking chilly again in relative terms. So wholly acceptable. In both cases I would say that the differential from normal seasonal temps is about 16°C +/- 2°C.

Back in the saddle for the first time in a little over 2 months; downtime was due to an extended work trip to Kyrgyzstan. Over there you're taking your life in your hands every time you cross the street, and it was 35C (95F) most days, so I didn't get to do any riding.
Despite this lingering chest and nasal congestion, the ride felt good - better than I'd expected! Guess the workouts at 4,000 masl (13,100 ft asl) while I was over there helped retain some level of fitness!
I'm also 15 lbs lighter now than when I went over, so that helps.
Glad to be back!

Commute this morning was marred by double parked trucks blocking buses which in turned blocked both the bike lane and the car lane. I almost got clipped by a guy who decided not to dismount his bike when he hopped on the sidewalk to get around the blockage. Yes, I know the both lanes are blocked. However, you still can't hop on the sidewalk and ride full speed down it. Three other people decided to join him so much for the deterrent effect of the crackdown. I had a rather eventful trip back from the grocery store today. See my post about it here https://www.bikeforums.net/commuting/...run-today.html
I'm getting buyers remorse over my Contour Roam 2. The first one's battery lasted about 6-8 hours depending on what quality setting you filmed with. However, that one died after a month and had to be RMAd. Contour was great and I got a replacement before I could ship the defective one back. Now the battery life on the second is approaching the six hours mark. The battery is annoying cause you check it by pressing a status button on the back of the camera and it is either green, red or flashing red if the camera is dead. When the SD card starts to get full the camera beeps at you to remind you to change it not so with the battery. I bumped the quality down to 720p so hopefully that helps some. I kinda wish I got a GO PRO instead. However I really hate their boxy shape. The Contour is a bit more discrete.

A wee bit chilly this morning in Anchorage. The damp wood decking on one of the Campbell Creek Trail bridge's had a skim of ice.

Nice ride again this morning. Only a couple cars, no pedestrians. Lots of confused bunnies on the trail. Gave in to temptation and ran every stop sign, (so much for being a good citizen) except the 2 where I had police cars right beside me, (What's that about?) ...which took 3-tenths off my avg speed. Yep, I did say average speed. It's how I know I'm going to make it on time, and a goad to push harder. Wish I could turn the auto-stop (on the computer) off, though that seems counter-intuitive. It would be better if I knew average based on overall time, including stops for commuting.
