I only listen to music when I'm encaged. Part of the joy of riding a bicycle, for me, is listening to the outside world, though I understand it would be different in the horn-honk-siren-diesel-noise environment of the modern urban metropolis.

Besides, I'd be embarrassed if someone caught me doing the Lambada on my bicycle...

I love music. But to dance would usually interfere with my pedaling cadence and I don't welcome that. I do enjoy it though when I find it convenient to make my pedaling match the beat of the song. Seems like sometimes I have a tad more energy from that synergy.God that was corny

I'd have to build a bike with 2 left pedals to do that......

I'm not really into music, and I prefer few distractions as possible when operating a vehicle on public roads or trails, plus I don't dance.

Any person who dances while riding their bike is just acting like a circus clown.

You lot have to know that I'm not talking about actual dance floor dancing? My feet never leave the pedals & i'm not moving my arms, just grooving to a good tune that grabs me....

I feel like bicycling is a dance, but figuratively speaking, which is what I thought Andy meant and assumed everyone else thought too. I'll be out on a ride and songs will be in my mind, and I'll find myself moving and - yes - grooving - to the songs as I'm going down the road. I pedal to the beat of the song, too, sometimes, unless it's a slow ballad. People that don't ride like that are fine, too, but the term "dancing" relates more to the enjoyment of the act of bicycling more than literal dancing.

The title made me think of my SO's brother.. he rides one of those freestyle fixed gear bikes, whenever I spot him and we're both out riding it's obvious who he is from quite a distance as he dances about jumping from the sidewalk into the bikelane doing wheelies etc.. it's actually pretty impressive. If I've got one earbud in personally my cadence will usually end up being the rhythym of the song, but otherwise I personally do not "dance" on my bike..

Nothing wrong if somebody wants to act like a clown and practice their dance moves while riding their bike, I am not going to stop them...I am having fun riding my bikes without listening to music. I often listen to music when I am at home, not when I am riding.

That's right, cycling is so much fun that I don't need any electronic gizmos strapped to my bike or my body to make it more fun. When I ride I like to focus strictly on riding and focus on my surroundings....Think about it. If I wasn't having fun riding then I would purchase a car and drive with a stereo system at a full blast.

Maybe his bike has extra large supersized platform pedals so he can move and stomp his feet all over while riding.

You're not alone at all. I will frequently bop my head a little. Sometimes even a little swooping and swerving if conditions allow. Not always when I'm actually listening to music. In fact, I rarely listen to music. I like dweeby podcasts for my commuting listening.

There are times when I'm focused on improving some aspect of my technique or physical performance, and times when I'm... not...

It would be obvious to pretty much anyone on this forum....... to people who mostly drive.... no idea.

One song is definitely up there in terms of dancing probability: "september" by earth wind & fire.

Me? I've been grooving while riding my bike for the last week to James Ellroy's latest novel, Perfidia. Turns back the clock to Dec 1941 L.A., with many of the cast of characters who populate Ellroy's L.A. Quartet of post war crime novels including L.A. Confidential and Black Dahlia. The dialog, especially of Sgt. Dudley Smith, is classic Ellroy. Highly recommended except for sensitive PC types.

Very true - Andy and I were on the same page and I thought everyone could read our (his) intent. But people being different, and having different perspectives, is what keeps this forum (and life) interesting.

Listening to music while riding saved my life..... well let me explain. I have been listening to music while commuting since Run DMC on my sony walkman. The other day my smart phone just up and died so I had to ride with no music. Now I ride through the Downtown East Side in Vancouver every night around midnight as part of my commute. With out the music I am hearing people cursing at me, challenging me to altercations and the icing on the cake was a hooker told me my flashing light was too bright so I told her it sure was because I saw how ugly she was. Well her "male friend" (pimp?) threw a beer bottle at me. Now if I had my music I would of just kept riding and not been my usual witty self and had projectiles lobbed at me.

Plus I like to ride to Miles Davis... Calms me down

Personally I don't for safety reasons.
But I did see a schwinn trike out side of the grocery store with a boombox bungie-corded into the back basket, playing some rob zombie. The rider was nowhere to be found, but they left their radio on.
