I drove today because my legs needed a break. Seriously. It had nothing to do with the temperature of 11 F and wind chill of 0. I had ridden about 8 days in a row, including days off work, and my legs are screaming yesterday. The brutal cold front hitting the Eastern US barreled through NC yesterday afternoon, causing temperatures to plummet and wind gusts up to 30 mph. My afternoon commute was my slowest on record. It was essentially like riding uphill the entire way, 16.5 miles, and took me 15 minutes longer than the previous day. I was so worn out when I got home that I decided then and there that I would drive today.
As happens nearly every time I drive, I was quickly reminded why I ride to work most of the time. Most of my driving commute is on a 8-lane highway with the traffic flow going about 45-60 mph. Traffic was particularly heavy this morning, so it was moving slower than usual. The traffic had finally opened up and began moving up to speed when the traffic signal for a side street turned to yellow. The driver in front of me immediately slammed on her brakes, in a situation where 99 drivers out of 100 would have continued through the light. She literally screeched to a halt the second the light turned yellow. That forced me to hit my brakes hard, which sent all of my gear flying in the car. I restock supplies on days that I drive, so my lunch, several drinks, thermos, clothes, etc. when hurdling to the floor. Needless to say, I was cussing up a storm. I'll be back on my bike tomorrow.

Head wind leaving work yesterday. Though I only went about halfway home where I had a meeting. My wife picked me up later.
I bought a balaclava yesterday at lunch in anticipation of this morning's cold snap. It worked well. The only thing exposed was from eye brows to bottom lip. I found that if I covered my mouth I wasn't breathing enough air to fuel the muscles. My toes got pretty cold but I survived. I have Woolie Boolie socks and shoe toe covers which helped, but for this morning's 7F (-13C - sounds more hardcore), I think some toe warmers would have been a good idea.
Here's the screen capture from my phone after I got to work.

Thank you! I think it's a little of the MPLS peer pressure, the bike culture up here is really into winter biking. I laughed about the string of selfies on social media this week of my friends and their frost covered faces from riding in the sub-zero weather. Last winter I took a pass when air temps were below -20F and windcills were -45F - I called up a friend to see if he'd biked, his reply "nah, I'm just a fair-weather bike-commuter" (MPLS bike culture)
Also note, I've worked down to these temps over a number of years getting my bike and gear right for these extreme temps. And Minneapolis is really good at giving us a lot of days to work on our gear for these temps.

I drove today
It was 8 degrees. I think I could have ridden but 11 miles one way probably would not have been fun. Plus I have to get home quickly for a date with my wife.

Traffic was actually lighter than usual today i guess people did not drive to work today.

Today was a trade, warmed up to around 5F this morning, but a painful headwind (15-20 mph) - just head-down grind, ugh. Just looked at the forecast, it shows that wind will do a 180 during the next 8 hours and provide a stronger headwind for the ride home. happy, happy, joy, joy.

You Minnesota folks are brave. I haven't found a way to keep my fingers and toes warm for my 30 minute ride in temps below 20F.
It will be warm enough to ride tomorrow, but with the snow and wind we've had, there's drifting and ice everywhere, so riding with traffic isn't safe.

My commute has been delayed until tomorrow. My back started to ache yesterday afternoon and didn't get better. It happens once every year to year and a half. I have no idea what I do to cause it.
I shall monitor BF from my bed with a hot water bottle on my back and my cat on my chest.

warm, 4degC (39F) and very foggy this AM. I left the house about 10 mins late (sorting out lights, clothing, etc). My brightest light had been electrical-taped to my kid's bike so I cut it off and put it on my bike to help with the foggy conditions. I rode fast and made up the 10-min deficit.

woke up to -5f/-21c this morning. The visorgogs fogged up a little bit, but uncovering my mouth and/or breathing out of my nose helped clear them up. The LL Bean Snow sneakers worked like a champ at those temperatures. I had two pair of socks and toe warmers and gaitors to keep the cold out. The toes started getting cool after about 45 mins or so, but I was at work by then. But I always bring my NEOS overshoes in those temperatures just in case. It was 10f/-12c riding home this afernoon.

Usually wear a thin balaclava; but today tried a
cap with the hood of my jacket under my helmet.
Was too hot after a while.

Brutal headwinds again this morning. I took the day off Thursday after getting battered with headwinds all the way home on Wednesday, missing what would have been my record coldest (11F) commute yesterday. What a shame. Temperatures were much warmer this morning in the upper 20s, but it didn't feel any better due to the wind. It's looking like I might get the double-whammy this afternoon as another cold front is coming our way, which would mean a 180-shift in wind direction, depending on the timing. Fun, fun, fun.
I'll take the cold temperatures any day over rain, sleet and snow. However, the longterm weather forecast is calling for rain every day next week. I'm not going to worry about it yet because our forecasters are terrible at predicting any kind of precipitation.

I got up and saw snow on the ground and decided I would ride anyway. Then I went out and walked my dog before heading to work, and I realized that in the best case scenario where I didn't fall or get hit by a sliding car, I would still be late, and that didn't seem like a good idea. I took the subway and got some reading done.
It's still snowing now, and I think we have over an inch. It's downright pleasant compared with the weather of the previous two days! Temperature has risen, and wind has subsided.

Around 11F (-11C) this morning with a windchill of -15F (-26C). Started getting cold about half way to work, and decided to stop at a Waffle House to warm up a bit. I wasn't freezing yet, but with another 10 miles to go, I figured there was a good chance I'd be frozen before reaching the office. Had a couple of cups of coffee, and was off. Good choice!

Last night was brutal, 13.5 miles in strong winds and 2 to 3 inches of snow. It was everything I could do to move the Pugsley at 9.5 mph. At one point, I was very happy with the heavy wheels, the crosswind would have pushed me over with a lighter bike. The pièce de résistance... just two blocks from home, I need to cross a packed road, bumper-to-bumper cars. Car in the near lane stops to let me cross, I started forward still on the bike and realize, I should dismount. I go to swing my leg over to dismount, but my tired leg couldn't clear the fender... got hung up and fell in the road slush. Proud moment.
This morning was a little better, less wind and some of the trails on my route were clear. Spring is only 4 or 5 short months away, at least here in Minneapolis.

I had a great ride in today; temps were mild in the low 50's, and clouds made for an amazing sunrise. There was drizzle overnight, so the streets and MUT were wet for a lot of my ride. I found myself wrenching late last night to get ready for today; one of those nights where you have a couple "simple" adjustments to make that turn into more than you bargained for. The end result was worth it; man my bike was absolutely purring today. I look forward to the ride home this afternoon; the days, while only by a couple minutes, are indeed getting longer.

4am, 21f/-6c and blowing snow with a 15-20mph headwind, felt like a mini blizzard. The aftn was sunny, windy and 13f/-10c.

Boo. No commute again today. My back is still bothering me. Back meds did nothing, suspect it may be an infection.

fog advisory but no fog this AM. 8degC (46F) and getting sunny. Should be clear/dark commute tonight...
Last night some ******* in a ****box car almost hit me pulling out of Burnaby 8Rinks, but I knew he was being an idiot. Just on the front I had my new PlanetBike Blaze650 set to "Superflash", a Blackburn Flea 2.0 set to "chase" (which is ****z-tacular) and on the helmet I had the MEC Plasma set to "Flash". Scared him when he finally looked!

Strain in hip is healing. Feeling human again and can walk straight most of the time, but stairs and turning and putting on socks still set it off. I might be able to ride Monday but won't push it.
