Not to steal your thread, but I have been wanting to recharge my i pod, and gps on my tours. I bought a Schmidt hub
last weekend for my morning commute. I use the same bike for touring. This morning I ran across your thread, and read everyone's response. I am ordering the pedal power + system this coming pay day. I will be testing it in a few weeks. Thanks

The shimano dynamo hub on my bike produces 6 volts AC and 3 watts of power. This is a nominal rating and is ample to charge a USB 5 volt DC device once you rectify the AC voltage to DC. Most other dyno hubs that I've seen/read about (e.g. Schmidt) also produce 6VAC @ 3W.

There are some bottle dynamo from Schmidt that also do 6VAC and I see there's even one that will do 12V (not sure if AC or DC though). Check the Schmidt website for details.

Also for charging gadgets have a look at the E-WERK from Busch and Muller. It seems an ideal solution for when you're actually riding along but what do you do if you need to hunker down a few days due to bad weather or breakdown?

HTH
Cheers

This Brave New World

hello.
kingnuterrick, you are very welcome, and ride carefully. i am completing my order for the Pedalpower+ this weekend as well, as i have now to await clarification on the solar application as it may not apply to the specific battery i want. with all that ability, i wondered what would be my laptop options; should i join a jogger on an upcoming trek.
recently i read about a 74 year young jogger leaving Bellingham, Washington with a solar powered walker: destination> Key West, Florida : eta 44 days; sleeping bag, tent. thought i would join him. also awaiting a response. i may have more down time than previously estimated, but not by all that much: i will probably ride off and reunite, multiple times daily.
velvedeere, i am not sure you have read this entire thread. i appreciate your input, and have noticed the Iwerk connector device. in questioning the US distributor, PWCycles, the owner was annoyed by my writing style and did not respond to my query. i dealt with one of his workers on the telephone when placing my hub order, and she never got back to me regarding the Busch and Muller equipment. i am presently convinced the Pedalpower+ will meet all my needs. thanx.
can you believe this 74 year young jogger? it must be 3000 miles. 3 sneakers.

We Are Experienced

hello.
i have not addressed the Zagg Sparq. nor the Solio, which i am still considering.
unfortunately for the Sparq, the number of complaints lodged against it ranged from not having good light charge coding- to possible cheap manufacturing runs to boost revenues. until it gets better reviews, i'll wait on that one. the Solio may help if i have to babysit the walker for a couple days while the gent flys back home for business commitments. this is unknown territory.
the known, is my homepage on "mytruckingspace".com . i have bicycled across the lower United States from California to West Virginia, and then down to Jacksonville, Florida on my cross country.
i am familiar with the jogger's route, and acknowledge there will be a likelihood of some more rain. downtime is for babies. i pray he does not wish to go until summer. waaaah! riding distances in the rain is doable, and most storm systems only extend 20 miles. there is usually a better chance riding out of one, than waiting it out. just turn the electronics off, put on the poncho, and get your face wet. it feels great if it is warm enough. waaaah! night is dry time. i prefer to burn only sunshine. i do not like bicycling at night if i do not have to.

I know this is an old thread. I was wondering if anyone tried Pedal power+system. I am debating on using it on my tour, or commute.

hello again. yes, this Schmidt/Pedalpower+ combination is an excellent method for charging your Iphone and small electronic devices :-)(-:, and very expensive (around $800) but it provides complete independent electrical freedom. you can get a handlebar mount for the battery pack, but i opted for the extension cord to carry it over my shoulder in my backpack. the quality is excellent, and i am completely satisfied with both the product and the company selling them. ride for life and be happy.

thanks rollzone, I have all the things you mention. I just wanted to know how it was working for you. I haven't had the time to mess with it until this coming month. I have a tour plan for the UP in Michigan in September, and it would be nice to have it built for the trip.

SOLAR battery packs and bags. I can see the above on top of your front handlebar bag for all day charging. AFFORDABLE and mobile. =)

I just started a new thread on a similar subject, then stumbled upon this one already going:

Nokia just announced their bike powered phone kit.
