I ride SPD pedals on my road bike, platform pedals on the hybrid. Can only use one pair of cycling shoes and one helmet at a time when riding, so no need to have more than that. Never had anyone comment about me wearing the same shoes and helmet since I've been riding.

I have five helmets: a Giro Ionos, Aeon and Synthe (my favorite) and a Lazer Helium and a Z1. The Lazers are my race team helmets.
For shoes I have 2 pairs of Factor ACC (white/black and all black...hunting for a deal on the red/white) 2 pairs of older Giro Factors (one is used for spin class w/ Wellgo SPD adapter), a pair of Bont A-1, Sidi 5.5 and finally Giro Privateer for my MTB.
So 7 pairs of cycling shoes...for me shoes are N+1 and I'm Filipino..........

I have one paid of SPD sandals for most of the time, and one pair of Lake SPD shoes for those times that it is just too cold for sandals with wool socks. I do have a second/spare helmet for me, plus 3-4 spare helmets for guests that may want to ride one of my/our bikes.

I haven't bought a new bike for myself in decades, but I have 2 pairs of Sidi cycling shoes and two helmets with combined worth of ~$400. And I will probably be buying a new pair of (probably Sidi) mtb shoes in the near future.

Bikes: Five active bikes: 1983 Diamondback RidgeRunner (early production mountain bike), 1951 Raleigh Sports 3spd, 2012 Novara Safari, 2013 Schwinn 411 IGH, 2016 Jamis Roughneck Fatbike; plus a Trek T900 tandem shared with the family

Three helmets, 'cause I ride year round in the Theater of the Season state of MN. One Giro ski helmet with integrated ear muffs (for winter and sub 45 degree F. days), one Giro "nutcase style" with limited vent holes for those cool days in the fall and spring and an older Bell Muni that I will probably replace this summer for hot weather rides.

The only pair of biking shoes I own are a set of Nashbar sandals that I wear anytime it's over 60 degrees or so. Love'em. Colder weather? What I'd wear otherwise when walking (platform pedals).

I got two helmets,
One clipless pedal/shoe system
One GOOD flat pedal/shoes system, Thats all because I got better things to spend my money on, Important things like,,

beer

Iz there any riders out there that get JUST the gear they need and NEVER obsess about it,
Iz there any riders out there who don't need the latest and greatest toyz,
Iz there any riders out there who ride the bike for a whole ride, a long ride and don't constantly second guess their current equipment choices?? "

Or am I the only one who just preps my equipment prior to a ride, grabs my gear and goes at it without thinking "I need more/better stuff" ???

Last week I was fixing up an old Raleigh with cottered cranks. I must have spent two hours searching my shed for old cotter pins, which I knew were there somewhere, finding suitable nuts, and trying all combinations of them out in a vain attempt to get the cranks to lie in a straight line.

Eventually, and very reluctantly, I walked down to the LBS and spent £1.50 on two new pins.

Please don't ask me to to make a big decision like buying an extra helmet.

Probably millions of people like that . . . but they don't read this forum.

OP - I've got two helmets, one Rudy Project that I use for primarily winter commuting. I sized up on that one so I could comfortably wear head coverings underneath. I also have my headlight semi-permanently strapped to that one. For recreational road riding I have a Giro Atmos.

For shoes, I have an inexpensive (I think they were about $65) pair of Shimano MTB shoes to use with my winter commuter. I also have a pair of Lake winter boots with SPDs if the weather gets really cold. For recreational riding I'm now using Bont Vapor + shoes, though I have gone through Giro, Sidi, Carnac, PI and Shimano road shoes in a search for a comfortable, or at least well-fitting, shoe.

Bikes: 2018 Specialized Roubaix Elite, 2009 Specialized Hard Rock 29er, 1989 Cannondale w/Campy Nuovo Record Components (mostly anway, now just on the trainer) and Easy Racer Recumbent (home made from plans)

I am on my 4th pair of shoes, that I can remember, and 4 th helmet since I started riding as an adult about 40 years ago. I guess I'm too cheap to have a fetish. Probably should have replaced the helmet more often!!

But then I bought a new road bike in 2013. The one it replaced I bought in 1989. Boy, I am CHEAP!!

I think I'm sort of in that category.

I have two helmets, one used to be my only helmet before I decided I needed a road helmet with better ventilation, the other is my mtn bike helmet now.

I have one pair of Nashbar road shoes to go with my Shimano SPD-SL pedals, and I'm riding sneakers with my rat trap half toe clipped mtn bike pedals.

I'd like to get a new road bike, if for no other reason than I've had my current road bike for 31 yrs. I did a mtn bike up grade last year from a rigid frame to a hardtail, and I crash exponentially less now, so it was a good buy.

As far as obsessing about gear when I ride, not so much unless my gloves or bar tape are dirty and worn out or my clothes are uncomfortable, then I think about gloves, new tape or a new jersey/shorts.

Mostly I just go ride.

Looks pretty much like the Mavic helmet I bought last year that cost me less than $100 at Campmor.

FWIW my opinion is that helmets are the gear where most of us get hosed. In terms of safety there really is no reason for a helmet over $100. Just one cyclist's opinion.

Bikes: Giant Suede (Comfort cruiser - "The Rocking Chair"); Giant Escape 2 (700mm Hybrid - "The S.U.V."); Specialized Secteur Elite (Road Bike - "The Scooter"); Surly Troll (Touring Bike - "Load Up & Go Anywhere")

I have two 'cheap' helmets that wear - well - like 'helmets'. A couple of years ago I splurged on a Giro Ionos (a model now discontinued) that fits so well and comfortable it is not usual to forget I even have on when getting off the bike for a lunch stop. Truly one of 'best' biking safety investments I have made. I've even thought about buying another one to put into storage before they totally disappear from the marketplace!
