I got out for a hot muggy 12 mile ride this morning.

It was a bit of a celebration ride for me though. I had my last visit with my cancer doctor yesterday.
He pronounced me done with any further treatments or tests, and no more routine CT scans and blood work. He also said I could make an appt to have my chemo port removed at my convenience.
It's something I never thought I'd ever be completely done with, but apparently so.

Another day that I rode to work. Today's commute didn't even break the 12 mile mark. Oh well, next time I will leave earlier to ride longer.

Thank you all. Very much appreciated........

Woke up to flashing lightning and rolling thunder with rain pouring down at 0230. Surfed the net then got dressed and out at 0400 still seeing distant bolts flashing with thunder and some light drizzle that dissipated in 30 minutes. 77 minutes later had completed 15.51 miles.

I got up later than I had planned. I checked the weather app and decided nope- I couldn’t get out and back before this hits.

I left the house at 7:30 am and rode for 20 miles along the bike trail. I didn't want to stay on the bike trail due to it being Sunday and I thought it would be crowded, but I lucked out this morning.

Yesterday there was a guy hit on his bicycle on one of the roads I ride. He was airlifted to Boston. This is disturbing. Though the guy that hit him didn't leave the scene of the accident. So that was nice.

I finally got past my tire problems and went for a ride around the lake this morning. Just one 6 mile lap since it has been a few weeks since I last rode.
It is warm and humid- summer in Texas.
It seemed harder than it should have been and my speed was noticeably slower. When I was putting my bike of the carrier I needed to rotate a pedal a little and it didn’t want to turn. The rim brake pad was dragging on the rim pretty good. It seemed fine when I loaded to go ride so I have no idea when it started dragging.
That is just not right! 😄

essiemyra 06-16-25 06:32 PM

I rode my bike to work this afternoon. I went the direct routes both ways and that is only 9.7 miles. But it is 99% on the bike path. I will take it as a win as I did ride today. So that is good.

Sure did ... 45 miles this morning on the 1971 Raleigh Sports

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...5550d7b065.jpg
At Crane Beach, Ipswich, Massachusetts. 3 gear ratios is all I needed.

A nice loop ...

Rode 20 miles to work on the trail crew. Here's the view from the bike, approaching the trailhead. That's the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheater. The clouds dumped some lightning and hail on my ride home. The hail hit my bell, made me turn around to see what other fool was out there, passing me. Rode on MUP along C-470 much of the way.

Got out for another lap around the lake. 6 miles is so much easier with no brakes dragging. I barely noticed the 20mph breeze and 25mph+ gusts.
I waited until -pm to let some humidity burn off. 90° at 53% humidity felt a lot better than this mornings 83° and 80% humidity.
Hopefully the humidity will start decreasing soon so I can get some morning rides in.
BTW do cottonwood seeds count as fiber?

Did a 69.5 mile ride today from Charles City County Courthouse up the Capital Trail to Richmond through Browns Island then across the James River on the Tyler Bridge. Meandered and back to the Cap trail for the return. Glad I bring my first aid kit. Came across another OGR (Old Guy Riding) who had taken a bad spill. being help by two other OGRs helping him. He had a deep gash on his forehead. Cleaned it up and bandaged it to stop the bleeding. We could not convince home to let stopped with his bar and a bike rack after his ride. I hope he goes and get some stitches to close the wound. Anyway carry a first aid kit. Nothing extravagant. EDIT: Forgot to add a helmet would have prevented the gash.

Here’s a few pictures to brighten things up. It warmed up. Tomorrow will be hotter.

Not posting much in here. Work on bikes is eating up a lot of my time.
My daily average has jumped quite a bit. Dong a lot of plus 20 mile days, which is a good thing.

Couple of pics of things from the last week or so....

we carry a first aid kit

unfortunately had to use it one time when we came to aid another cyclist … but fortunately (and speak of great timing) a small group with a doctor and nurse then joined

Usually the first aid kit is for me. :)

We did help an OGW (old guy walking) in the heat a couple years ago. I could see him stumbling around like he was drunk on the side of the trail. He sat down under a tree. He had gone out walking with a small bottle of water and was a half mile from home. We refilled his bottle a couple times and soaked the cooling cloth he was using on his neck. He wouldn't let us follow him home, but was in much better shape talking and walking when we left him.

The heat index for the next 3 days will be in the 105-115 F range. 100-105 F actual temps with higher humidity in the 35% range during the peaks. Definitely 5am sunrise rides if I decide to go out, but even then it will still be 75-80 F with 70-80% RH. The high humidity makes it almost impossible to cool by sweating so you still need to pay very close attention, carry extra water, and stop occasionally to make sure you understand your condition before the heat sneaks up on you. Don't heat bonk. It's the more dangerous type.

It’s really hot and humid here too. I can’t tolerate it like I used to.

Summer is here... is was 90°F at work yesterday. I picked up a new bike after. Quickly set it up, so I ended up with yet another sunset ride, but lucky for me sunset is around 8:30, and it cooled down by then. Just over an hour ride, 19 miles. The Creo ebike is so fun! I rode a route (75% road, 25% gravel/dirt) I ride often on an XC Mtb or gravel bike so I know it well. It was so fun to fly up the hills...higher speed makes the heat a bit more tolerable

My GPS read 18.99 miles, but Garmin Connect says 19.00. Mid-high 70s, light wind, sunny almost all the way. Great day for a ride.

Garmin knows my age, and it knows all my rides this year. It tells me I got no aerobic or anaerobic benefit from this ride (or from any other ride this year) and need no time for recovery. And yet I ride a little bit faster every week. I ride in a slightly higher gear without cutting my cadence as time has gone on. I ride 10% farther every week. I could swear I'm getting some physical benefit from my rides, even though Garmin's programming disagrees. Strava at least tells me I'm consistently putting in more effort than in previous rides, which does square with what my body tells me. :)

I rode a hot muggy 12 miles this morning. First ride in a week.
Felt good to get out on the bike again though.

obviously you are not only doing well - you are improving - and getting physical benefit

the Garmin people that worked on that software might be the same people that developed the route software on our car navigation system (Honda - supposedly Garmin ?) … some of the routes are head scratchers :(
