I didn't get to ride in yesterdays' 83-degree weather, because I was watching the Caps lose, and the weather forecast made it sound like the whole weekend would be a washout, so that would mean a 3-day riding hiatus. I don't like skipping that many days in a row.
So this morning, I looked out the window at 5:30am, and it was only lightly misting, so I decided to head out for a short ride on my bike, since I have the lights all charged up. I ended up doing a 100-miler, from Vienna, to Bethesda on Beach Drive, and out to Mt Vernon, as well as generally just wandering around Arlington. It never really starting raining until 11:00am or so. I certainly ended up getting soaked, but it was worth it! |
39km in the morning. Got home, decided I hadn't had enough so I went another 20 on the road and 4 on a local hill. At that point my legs were telling me that enough is enough and I should stop. Still, 59km isn't bad for a cold windy Sunday. :)

Put in 10 miles after a trade in the morning , my Ross and Nishiki for a Cannondale H 300 and C 300 . The H 300 is ready to roll after a changeover of accessories . Beautiful weather for a first ride on a new to me bike, 73 and sunny, winds WNW 15 mph .

Did 51 miles on Thursday. It was over 80degF about 2700ft total gain. Got a little dehydrated but it was GREAT! Can't beat a Trike for long rides. But who would have thought HEAT would be an issue in Maine in March**********? But it back to 43degf and raining so back to the trainer today.

70+ miles. How is it that the same route and different day can have so much different results? Today I just didn't have it, whatever it is. Cut the ride a little short and took extra rest breaks to get it done. It was a beautiful day and wind was not a factor.

http://app.strava.com/rides/5675974 I wonder if folks down south, where you can ride 12 months a year without much bother, have "off-seasons". The experts say you need them to recover. |
After a busy week of family gatherings, bike event planning meetings and a weekend trip to Savannah, I got home today with just enough time to take the MTB out for a 1-1/2 hour ride of mixed singletrack and doubletrack. It felt good to be riding for the first time since Monday. Planning a road ride for after work tomorrow.

(5 riders did it, one was 50 y/o) The South route was 4200 miles in the heat for 57 days. ( 5 riders did it.) Roy on the South route was 73 y/o and rode 56 of the 57 days. I was 67 y/o at the time and rode the first ten days, 860 miles of hills, then took one day off. http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...ide-Ends-in-LA |

Stalled, worked, stalled, rode, appreciated the irony.

12 miles yesterday. Fixed a flat in the middle of the ride , and held up by the Amtrak Texas Eagle in downtown Normal .

Sunday: Started the week with 84 miles. Fog...Sun...Light winds..Temps 86*F
|
Didn't get to do the Sunday ride with the wife yesterday so it ended up being a no ride day. I did my daily 30 mile ride today in some nice cool temps and a sunny sky with not too much wind, for a change. I ran into some old EMS buddies that I haven't seen in about 10 years and we had a very nice 30 minute reunion. Ended up being a very good ride day.

32 miles today(18 to the LBS, slight seat adjustment, 8 or 9 miles to test it out ending back at the LBS and bought some gloves, then home making it 32 miles).
|
Very short (12 mile) solo tandem ride, but a big mechanical breakthrough - I can now use all four chain rings. May not seem like much to all you 50+ hard core roadies, but us seniors need a big gearing range, 24-36 on the low end and 60-11 on the high end (to get the old heart a-pumping and flush out our arteries).

Yesterday I got in a 21 mile suburban/rural ride by myself. Very pleasant weather again with enough of a semi-tailwind on the way back to cruise in the mid-twenties for a few miles. That is not my norm.
|
15 miles, winds gusting to 25-30 mph. Fun!! I just think of the wind as a good, steep, never-ending hill, power down, and charge! :)

I worked as timer for a whitewater slalom race all weekend so I didn't get to ride. Today I went out for a regular 20 mile loop during my daughter's gymnastics practice. My legs were so dead I almost turned around after 5 miles, seriously doubting whether I could even make the whole loop. But the weather was so awesome I just pushed on, taking in the sights on such a pretty day. In the end I was 2 min faster than I have been recently given the same effort. Sometimes it's just hard to know. I'm glad I pushed through even though my legs didn't come along for the ride.

I rode the usual 29.5 mile Monday ride with 4 club members. I knocked about a minute off my previous best split time to the top a big hill about 10 miles into the route. I faded a little later on and ended up about a minute over my best time ever. My legs and stamina are starting to show signs of life, but still have a long way to go.

Finally got out and rode after the great split toenail incident. Felt really good the whole ride, time was best to date since returning to riding in October. Surgeon's appointment tomorrow, keeping my fingers crossed.

Catching up here a bit. 23.5 solo on Saturday, then was ride marshal for the 8-mile route on Tour de Cure. 42 @ 16.9 on Sunday.
