A <.5% error when you're going up a 10% hill is hardly useless. For all practical purposes the horizontal distance works just fine.

Yes that would work as well.

About 2 years ago and 60 extra pounds I thought every hill was at least an 8 percent grade. I would punch the bike computer into alt mode and then go for grade and discover it was a 4 to 5 percent grade. I thought the computer was less than honest.
