You all are such masochists. Cycling should be enjoyable. If I could avoid it, I would not choose to finish a long ride into the wind. When I did my one and only century the wind shifted and the last 30 miles were into about a 15mph breeze. I would have much rather finished with a 15 mph tailwind, thank you very much.
Bragging rights ain't worth it.

I've not done a century ride but was rather looking forward to doing one tomorrow. Everything weatherwise was cooperating except the wind. I'm in very good condition, have riddent 60's and 80's all summer with personal TT's on the hilly 20mi course at 1:10:00.
Tomorrow's forecast is showing WSW at 10-20mph. And no, I dont buy into the "tailwind is great on the ride back" theory. The course is an out and back but no way am I pitching the dice on the wind holding from that direction all day. Temps will be 60's-low 70's...sunny and perfect except for that wind.
What is your wind threshold on a day for a century ride?

10-20 mph isn't that much wind. I figure as long as I can maintain 15 km/h into a wind, it's OK. When my speed starts to drop below 15 km/h, that's a strong and annoying wind.

But yeah, last year I completed (an unsupported) century into a pretty serious headwind and yeah, I would have been much happier without it.

The pain of enduring is temporary. The pain of quitting is forever.
The satisfaction of having done it is the payoff. YMMV

Strong headwinds are not too bad if you can ride in the drops. That is what the drops are for. What I really dislike are gusty winds from the side that want to slam you down on the pavement.

So, the problem is that you were in a hurry? You had something to do later?
My first century took well over 8 hours without strong wind. I have done several that took that long.

It's the racer in me. I'm bored stinkin' to death when I have to ride a humbling pace
