looking for distraction

Desperation is driving me out of my lurking status to seek online companionship. I was in the MS Ride in New Bern a couple of weeks ago and crashed resulting in a fractured second metatarsal. I am non weight bearing for probably six weeks.

A rider, not with my group, up ahead skidded in some sand. That caused a chain reaction resulting in a rider crashing directly in front of me. I hit her bike, went down on my right hip, and my right clipped in foot twisted. We weren't even in a tight pace line or bunched up. It just can happen very quickly.

I was sagged in, which is a whole story in itself, taken by the nice MS volunteer to the Express Care for xrays, and was issued a temporary cast and set of crutches. Interestingly, the radiologist who saw the x-rays said I did not have a fracture; however, the MD disagreed and treated me as a fracture anyway. That was fortunate, because when I saw the orthopedist he said there was absolutely no doubt it was fractured. I now need to get a CT scan to check joint alignment.

Anyway, thank the Lord for Roku, my new Kendle, my husband who has had to curtail his work travel, good neighbors and friends bringing food, and my KNEE SCOOTER!! ( I do not work for or have any financial interest in Knee Scooters). Man, I wish I had that scooter from day one. What a difference it makes to be able to have your hands free while you are upright. Anyone with a lower leg injury that can kneel with the other leg, that is what you need to get. I was getting carpal tunnel in my wrist from using the crutches.

Anyway, this is getting old. Hello out there.

I'm curious to know if the radiologist who said you didn't have a fracture. Was he just an x-ray tech giving you his opinion prior to sending the xray to the radiologist (MD)?

Glad you have a speed outlet--knee scooter. Keep up the good work, get fully well soon!!

PS. Please ignore my signature cartoon. It is something I would avoid looking at, your having suffered bicycle trauma recently.

He was referred to by the nurse and MD as "the radiologist." The express care was affiliated with the hospital right next door. It is a little concerning, because he was supposed to be the expert.

I suppose it's better safe than sorry, sorry about the cast though!

Some fractures are hard to spot, especially if close to the joint, there is always the possibility that the Radiologist was very busy and didn't have enough time to study the X-ray right away. They should tell the MD if they haven't had enough time, and will revisit the X-Ray at another time. The doctor will then treat it as a fracture, until they get confirmation from the Radiologist.

May I see a photo of your knee scooter? All of my knee surgeries, plus replacement of my left knee, and I have never heard of one.

Sorry to read of your crash, have you thought as to whether or not a different turn or twist might have given better or worse results? That is something I always do after the fact, is think about if I could have done anything different to bring about a better result. And no, I do not mean by not riding, or not being there

Get well fast, and remember PT if the DR suggests it ...

Over here and we have had several Soccer players with the same injury. 6 weeks seems the norm for recovery but "Apparantly" a fresh break is not the easiest to spot. Only advice to offer is don't go kicking any footballs for a few weeks--Or the cat- Or hubbie.

Take a well earned rest and enjoy the break.

This is it. You put the knee of the injured leg on the pads and push yourself along with your good leg. You can also get a basket for it. Makes ALL the difference, but it wouldn't work for a knee injury. It needs to be lower leg - ankle or foot.

The only thing I can think of I could have done is get unclipped, but it happened so fast I really didn't have time to react. Even if I had unclipped, I might have tried to put that foot down which could have resulted in worse injury. Being a couple of feet further back would certainly have been helpful.

Take up a new hobby? Maybe drawing, photography, or ??? Take a bike maintenance class if you already don't know how to rebuild a bike?

I take it you are female? One of the challenges for many females is upper body strength, so maybe spend some time doing upper body work at a local gym?

A friend of mine used the knee scooter. She said it was very liberating. I just wish I could use it now instead of crutches. Oh well, we all have our challengers.
