Because the way I am feeling right now- That new computer is going out the window with a bit of force.

Works fine and it is fast- but setting the damn thing up is driving me mad. Not made any easier by the new OS in windows 7 as the last OS I used was not.

Dare say It will all be settled shortly but it is true what they say.Haven't had to work on computers for years and just like Physical fitness- If you don't use it you lose it.

As you may be able to tell- I am experiencing a few problems and I need a bike ride to sort me out. That may not be possible tomorrow as that thing called weather is getting in the way. Had a bit of rain this week--About 5" in 3 days and the wind is still way up there. Believe it or not--Our little corner of South East England is in drought conditions. Just decided-If no floods I am going for Pie tomorrow. Ride east into the wind and hopefully get a Tail or side wind on the way back. Should get a few cobwebs away and might be able to think better on sorting the black box by the side of my computer desk.

I feel your pain... Luckily, I teach 5th graders and I turnover all my computer technology problems over to them. Its amazing the salt kids have when it comes to modern technology.

I hated Windoze 7 at first, so much that I dual-booted it with XP. A year later, I can't even remember the last time I booted XP. You can still get 7 to do what you want it to, but it takes a lot more effort. It was obviously designed for idiots, who never use anything not sold by MacroShaft. Be patient.

Problem is that having lost the computer set up skills. I have lost it and I expected my son in law to be setting it up for me. Unfortunately he has a problem with his eyes again and he is on a cocktail of drugs that has affected him greatly so I am trying to set the thing up on my own.

Having used XP before and never used 7- it is a bit different but not drastically. It's just a computer and as a user- I can work my way into 7. In fact from what I can see- I like it. BUT the router needs setting up. It did not work and it needs a password that I do not know. (SiL set it up originally) Got it working but it is not set up properly yet. Set up the internet so I can post here but no- E-mail yet and I don't know how to set it up. Then a couple of my games will not Run as I am missing a programme that I can't find but now I am on the internet I can find them. Will find the other problems as I continue to swear for the rest of the day.

OH--And it is raining again. Garden is flooded so I will have to forgo the ride today. Too much to do in the garden right now and this bl**dy computer to sort out. Just as well as it looks like we have the GC's today to give mum a rest and able to look after her poorly hubby.

Some email programs will set themselves up, Thunderbird does, the router password is often on the unit itself. When you set up a new computer it takes about a week to get it usable, and another couple of months to get it to where your really happy with it. Similar to bike fit, you can get close after a few rides, but it takes time to get it really dialed in.

What always drives me nuts, is where from one version to another, they change stuff that works perfectly well, but there are bugs that have been around for many versions, that they never seem capable of squashing....

I'm not a big fan of Windows 7 or Vista. I'm still running XP because three of my language compilers don't work on Windows 7 or Vista. My biggest gripe is that they pretty much reorganized everything in Vista and Win 7 to where it takes you 20 minutes of searching to find a feature that has been in the same place since Win 95.

Coca-Cola is just starting to go to Windows 7 because the terminal emulator that they use for one of their main databases doesn't work on Win 7 and they had to wait for the developers to come out with a compatible version. Plus, none of the printers that they have in the Tampa office had compatible drivers for Win 7. Our team was one of 4 teams that beta tested Win 7 and although it has some pretty bells and whistles, in my opinion, it really isn't user friendly. I'm glad that I retired and don't have to mess with it anymore.

Huh?

When I take a Mac home, I expect it to be usable within a minute or two of plugging it in. I expect to be happy with after I enter the wireless password.

What the heck is there to get "dialed in" about a computer? I'm confused. It's just a box of sand with a little bit of gold or the odd trace element thrown in.

Getting the computer usable are things like getting email set up, and such, getting it dialed in are things like removing the-so-crippled-they-might-as-well-not-bother "lite" versions of apps off that you don't use anyway and getting the stuff you want to use, installed. Yes the Mac comes with a nice set of apps already installed, but there are certain ones I want to use, because I like them, most of them are multi-platform and free (yay).

They don't own Macs. They wouldn't understand.

Every mac that I have seen is out of my financial reach. The cheaper ones will not be man enough to do what I want to do without changing a few components and that is not possible. On top of that you cannot spec a mac to your own requirements and if anything goes wrong- it is almost impossible to repair yourself.

So you are either a Mac or Windows person. I am a windows user and will stay that way till a mac comes my way that I can try for an extended period of time to test and see if it is suitable for my use.

So got the Windows operated new computer semi sorted. Just have a few programmes to install-- about 6 or so-- and that is when I will find out that the printer is not man enough- or that I am out riding so often that I never needed a new computer in the first place.

Seems the proverbial argument- Shimano V Campy- Steel V C.F.- Ford V GM. You name it and there will always someone not prepared to accept anything but their choice.

But no ride this morning. 6 am and it was beautifull- 38 degF and it would warm up- No clouds so the sun would come out and no wind. By 9am it was 30mph-Temp of 45 and raining. Spend the day in the garden straightening it out from yesterdays weather.

Frustrations do come in packs sometimes. Don't they?

I wish you luck on the computer, the garden, the riding and all else.

There should be a reset button on the router. Push it for a few seconds, and the password and everything else will be reset to the default, which is some combination of username: admin and password: admin.
