Many years ago my level of Vitamin D was checked and the doc stated that they'd never seen such a low number. I started taking Vitamin D3 daily--about 2000u/day. He hasn't checked the levels since so I don't know where I am now. This test was performed when I was rarely outside before I was exercising. With my walking and now cycling and taking D3, I'm sure my levels are quite high. I haven't asked for another test and since I ride at the crack of dawn, or before dawn usually, I'm still going to take the D3.

Yes, but an important factor is that - even though the sun is out - the angle of the sun changes a lot in winter, and this makes a difference in Vit D production.

My wife, living in CO (sunshine about 330 days a year) has Vit D marked deficiency, and takes D3 (and I believe D4) - about maybe 5,000 units daily.

Is there a particular brand recommended?

I ride year round as well, but I believe the rain drops might be filtering the necessary sun rays.

I get the Vitamin D3 from Costco. Doc told me you really can't overdose on Vit D. I take 2000u/day.

Bikes: Enough bikes...for today!

What a great discussion, touching on a lot of integrative points. Thanks to the OP and everyone else for their additional two cents - it all adds up! We are best advised to not think of our frame as a "given" as we age.

Today I learned the results of my recent bone density test: Osteopenia. I had to email my doctor to request the results, and her nurse sent me a reply saying that I have osteopenia and recommended taking calcium and vitamin D. Unfortunately, she didn't provide my T-score(!!!) so I replied with a request for that.

I've already started adding walks to my weekly routine.

This article sort of talks about the differences between calcium citrate and calcium carbonate, one disolves better or easier for some people.

For those of you paying out of pocket for the bone density scan, what price ranges are you seeing?

+1 on this. I switched from running to cycling in my 40s to save my knees, and my BMD (checked yearly because of another condition) started to fall. As my doc explained it, cycling isn't really a weight-bearing exercise. I'm not able to run or walk long distances anymore (I can ride all day, fortunately), so I've added weights to my workout. Test coming up in a couple of months, so we'll see...

At least it's more weight bearing than sitting on the couch and eating chips and dip all day.

After that I started 1200 mg calcium daily and walking 5 miles 3-5 times weekly. The other days are cycle days, typically a slow 50 mile ride. A year later, now post menopausal, my numbers worsened. I stepped up the walking to jogging but the next year, my numbers were worse still. The doctor was about to put me on some kind of Fosamax type drug but I showed him the new calcium pills I'd just started, Bayer's Citrical Plus Bone Density Builder w/ Genistein. Genistein is supposed to "increase bone density by up to 5%." I stepped the jogging up to running (six 10-minute miles on a treadmill). Running is supposed to be good because bang-bang-banging the ground causes microfractures which cause bones to remodel. So even tho I dislike running, I do it and we shall see in a few months if it and the Genistein have had any effect.
Update: better DEXA scan today! Not as good as pre-menopausal but better than either of the last two years.
I know it's mostly guys on here, but pass this on to your wives: Running + Citrical Plus Bone Density Builder w/ Genistein works!

Plan is to continue running 3 miles 4-5 times weekly and replace the other half hour of running with weight training exercises (I'm actually already doing them). Will report back in a year.

when I was diagnosed with RA, they also did a scan that also showed osteopenia, i do take calcium supplements, ride about 100 miles a week and do weight lifting. I don't worry about it and just figure keep doing what i am doing.

Maybe all that excess bone is affecting my climbing speed.
Are you so old you played before shinguards were required? I look back on those days and wince....

Not sure where you get the "conventional wisdom". In the weight lifting and body building communities it has been common knowledge for many years that bone health is similar to muscle health in that stressing them in combination with a proper diet causes them to grow and be stronger. On the other hand the "medical experts" seem to change their minds every few years about what chemical helps and which hurts.

Ditto on the posts that emphasize that weight lifting does not necessarily equate to big bulk freaky looks. A lot depends on what the exercises are and what you put in your body while lifting.

Cycling is a good exercise if you want it to be. Again it all depends on how you ride. That goes with free weight lifting in that what you get can be tailored based on what you want to do. Lots of free, or nearly so, help out there.

Apologies for bringing back an "old" thread, however, now that I've been told that I have osteopenia and need to supplement my calcium intake it suddenly has become pertinent. Oddly, given how common it has become, supplementation seems to be an area of some controversy. How much, what kind and the usefulness of it all being commonly asked questions without any clear answers available. I guess I'll just have to have my pie "ala mode" from this point on. Drat!

Oct 25, I had an "incident" on the bike which resulted in my current avatar. (Tib & fib +titanium "nail")
The checked My D level and it was a 12, where 30 is "normal".
They immediately put me on 10,000/day, until yesterday where I'm now down to 6,000. (5,000 capsule + 1,100 in my "supplements")

I had absolutely no clue!
I'd suggest for just about everyone to at least take a vitamin tablet/day.
I HAD been taking a generic "senior" vitamin + a calcium, magnesium & zinc tablet, but had kind of gotten away from that during the summer. Maybe IF I hadn't********************?

I get to try to go "bootless" tomorrow. 14 weeks after my breaks.
