I'd forgotten about "The Bicycle Thief". I liked it but I doubt my grandsons would identify very much with the plot or any of the characters. My favorite scene is all of the men casually clinging onto the outside of the overcrowded bus like it was something routine.
Another suggestion: Six Day Bike Rider starring Joe E. Brown - hilarious

Very good job on that site ! I really identified with the rivalry with the different sides-of-town aspect of that movie although I had just started riding before it came out.
So how were you involved with the '85 Coor’s Classic ? Those are the races that really got me interested in cycling from watching Aisner's early promo films in the theaters (thus my handle, lol). Big thrill when the race came to Manitou Springs in '79 where I was staying with a girlfriend.

I helped organize the road blocks and course marshals in San Francisco. The Coit Tower TT and the Fisherman's Wharf Criterium. They gave us tickets to see a pre-release version of American Flyers at the Palace of Fine Arts where Tesich gave a speech and met with people. Seeing Greg Lemond and Ron Kiefel up close gave me goose bumps.

Lemond went by in the Manitou Springs to Hoosier Pass road race in '79 but I had never heard of him yet and don't even remember seeing him. He was a 17 year old junior and came in 4th in the GC ! That was the first I'd heard of him was reading about him after it was over.

If you get Netflix, check out Ride the Divide. Good times.
If you can watch YouTube on your TV, there are two great hour long shows on the PBP 2011. One is the official "conquer your fears" edition, the other is an unofficial "you're going to die out there, and for what?" version. Both are excellent and have English subtitles.

As long as the player supports Netflix, the player has internet access(wired or wireless) and you have a Netflix subscription, yes, you can watch Netflix via your Blu Ray player.

For anyone interested... these folks are producing (for the first time anywhere) the complete soundtrack to Breaking Away, including songs that didn't make the movie. Apparently there's a BluRay version of the film coming out soon as well.

I rather enjoyed Premium Rush as a glimpse into a cycling culture I had only a hint of. Riding stunts were great and fit the plot in a cool kind of way. Oh and I found a slight bit of fixie understanding watching this.

^ this.
Breaking Away is very good, but your grandchildren are unlikely to understand post-high school angst.
Premium Rush isn't a very good movie, but has some interesting riding stunts in it. The boys may enjoy its primitive script and dialogue. The pre-cognition riding path effect is cool the first time. It wearies after the 75th time...
American Flyers is one that they can probably understand and appreciate, although I find Kevin Costner annoying in all movies but one (can you guess which?).
+100 on the Bicycle Thief; an excellent film. PG

I just discovered one on netflix called Isn't Life Wonderful. Made in the fifties obout a guy who opens up a bicycle shop in england at the turn of the last century. It features some very nice vintage bicycles. Seth McFarland would have a heyday with it, espicially the kid who narrates the movie. Not one to own, is boring. But like I said. Some nice treasures to behold.

As a proud IU graduate...Breaking Away is tough to beat...
Although, "Hell on Wheels" and the very much unknown "A Hard Road" take the cake for best cycling flicks...
