Without a purchase receipt, I hope you still get warranty on your bike.. It's good deal though!

... I will be getting the unassembled bike from craigslist on Sunday ... He obviously does not have a receipt as it is part of his prize package. ... Do you guys have any suggestion on how to approach the assembly of this bike in order to get warranty from Dahon? ... my question is, what is the best approach to get warranty from Dahon without a purchase receipt? Is this possible?

Thanks Hank. I will be getting the unassembled bike from craigslist on Sunday (I offered $420). He says that he won the bike as a prize from "Dancing With The Stars" TV Show (the bikes comes with a good story!) and it is unassembled, and never taken out of the original box (although the top of the box is open) and the box still has his name on it. He obviously does not have a receipt as it is part of his prize package.

I sent an email to dahon asking about warranty and I hope to get a response from them soon. I do not get the bike til Sunday. If I have it assembled and checked by my local bike shop like some suggest + the cost of the bike, I am only saving $100 from buying it assembled online (with warranty) so I wish to get a reply from Dahon if I am going to get warranty before I push through with the craigslist transaction. I did tell them I them it was won in a raffle. Thanks - I will post pictures as soon as I have it assembled.

Dahon warranty information is at:
https://www.dahon.com/support/how-reg...ty-information
Please note that the warranty is to the original owner with a purchase receipt from an authorized Dahon dealer, and the warranty is not transferable. IMHO, in the situation being discussed, the seller & buyer should negotiate a price based on the fact that the "prize" Dahon does not meet the requirements for a warranty from Dahon to the buyer.

I also talked to Thor and he gave me a good price for a brand new one that he can ship already assembled. It is around $100 more than I am spending on the craigslist bike plus the cost of dealer assembly. Thor said the craigslist bike is a great value and I am buying the Dahon for the quality and not the warranty. Just thinking warranty is good for the peace of mind.

I have another n00b question - my LBS sells the Speed P8 a little more expensive ($40 more than the best price I could get shipped to me assembled from another city) but they do offer free tune-ups for life. Do you guys know if this is worth the extra money? How much do you guys usually pay for tune-ups and how often do you do it? Do you guys know if there is a catch to the usual "free tune ups for life" that comes with the bike when bought from a LBS (maybe just limited tune ups, etc)? I have been calling my LBS about bikes, prices, etc. and felt like they are getting a little annoyed so if anyone can shed some light, would appreciate it. Thanks!

it really depends on the way you used/abused your bike. for normal riding on normal condition you might not need frequent tune ups. and trust me, google and youtube will be your bestfriend when it comes to fixing bikes. you will be able to learn how to fix bike in no time. if you're really serious about working on your bikes, you should invest in a good bike tools. that's all you need. i try to stay away from this free tune ups program. as much as possible i always try to fix my bikes. if there is something i don't know about, i just google or youtube it. my recommendation - as what thor said - that P8 is a good deal. you get a used price for brand new bike. and if you're still having second thoughts, order it from thor. you'll get a free lifetime support....

About tune-ups, it is worth learning how to do the things for yourself. For example, brake and gear shift adjustments ought to be routine, and at sheldonbrown.com or parktool.com you can get all the necessary info for such things. More complicated items such as cable replacements are also relatively simple.
So, tune-ups may sound appealing but do not really amount to much compared to knowledge you can gain for yourself.

Saturday is here... plus you'd be saving a total of $200 if you assembled it yourself thus saving 1/3 of the price.

As always, thank you guys for your advice and opinion. I am pushing through with the craigslist transaction. I am tempted to assemble it myself (especially as I can have the help of my friend in assembling) and thus saving money but still on the fence if I 'd want to do that or have a dealer assemble it as I have talked to a couple of dealers here who claims that I can still register it for warranty without a purchase receipt as long as I have a proof that a dealer did the initial assembly adjustments etc. and register it online. Has any of you ever done a warranty claim for your Dahon? If so, did you have to show your purchase receipt before the shop took the bike in to repair it? Thanks again!!!

Hey guys, really appreciate the help. To those who sent me a private message, apologies if I have not been responding as apparently, I need a minimum of 50 posts under my belt before I could send a private message. If you could PM me your email address, I would very much like to respond to your message. Thanks!

Sorry it was a busy weekend but yes, I got it for $400 (since no warranty is included) from the owner yesterday.
Here's a picture of the bike in the box.
Excited to get it assembled this week! Will post another set of pics once I put it together.

it sure is brand new in the box. you've got a good deal in there. if i was near that area i could have grab that bike myself. it's now getting so exciting....CONGRATS... don't worry about the warranty part, you did so well with that purchase. can't beat a $250+ discount for a brand spanking new bike.
