Actually I can take my scorchers on and off with my hands. Not tight. The sidewall probably had shredded because I perennially ran them very low to compensate for the Rome cobbles. The rubber had worn down nearly entirely anyway. All in all I was quite surprised how long the scorchers lasted, given that they're not designed to last. (comfort, speed, grip, durability: you can only pick three).

Where does price work into the tradeoff?

an adjustable air/oil shock no bigger than the elastomer suspension block
would be a nice product.

maybe the 'you guys should' design team, can get right on that..

Bikes: Brompton, Dahon Vitesse D5

I'll have a go at making one. It'll be guaranteed to work worse than an elastomer block.

I imagine it's a dependent variable. For example, so far as I know you can get a tire with a grippy and fast rubber compound, but it won't be expected to be durable, and no amount of money will change that.

It matters less if you have a lot of it.
