So all the existing bazillion al handlebars and parts will fail? And al frames? I don't have any data(maybe some here does) but the failure rate of al parts/frames seems pretty minuscule, if not litigation would most likely be running rampant if this was the case. Just asking.

Yes, eventually they WILL fail. It may be a heck of a long time, but they do not have an infinite life, no matter how low the stress.

The op's stem will also fail eventually. With the threaded hole it'll occur sooner. But it's hard to say by how much, or if it'll be before a lifetime of use?

Brian- You do bring up good points. And I have to admit that I am less concerned about a SMALL hole in a stem then some other parts. But the consequences of being wrong and the other options convince me that i wouldn't do this. One bit of information we haven't yet been told is the stem's wall thickness. This bell mounting begs for a more creative solution. Andy.
