I ride in Arizona too, but I'm not worried about the sun at all, because there are great sun screen lotions out there on the market that can protect a rider.

Affect as a noun is a proper scientific term. By no means is it medical jargon or "short" for another word. The closest synonyms are emotion or mood.

Let's not confuse psychology with science. "A$$hole affect" would still be wrong, either way.

I REFUSE to ride on any of our MUPs for just that reason. They're either walking in a 2-3-4-5-across gaggle or they're walking their dog on a leash (across the path) or they are listening to their 'Walkman' or they otherwise don't give a crap about bike riders. Our local muni park 'MUP' has now imposed a 10mph 'speed limit' to discourage bike riders. That means that I have to ride on the road and subject myself to the ire of 'cagers' that don't comprehend the reasons why...

What about riding in the evening after the sun goes down?

I ride in my neighborhood at 5:30 am and it's dark out. I have a flashing headlight and there's a girl that runs in the mornings and she runs with traffic instead of against it. And she runs on the road not on the sidewalk. And she wears dark clothes and no reflectors or lights. I couldn't tell you how many times I've nearly plowed into her on my bike. Either run on the sidewalk or run on the side of the road facing traffic (she could at least see a bike with a flashing headlight coming her way).

It would still be 110° until the ground radiates that heat back in to space. Probably still near 90° at midnight. The LOW temperature is generally just before sunrise, and out in AZ in the summertime it is still close to 75-80°.

Wow, that is hot. I would love it there. I would ride at night also if I lived there.

After around the third near miss on the same jogger, I think I'd stop and offer her some constructive criticism for both her safety, and yours.

Yeah, but what is really fun is when Joggers and Walkers are in the bike lane, instead of on the nearby sidewalk. At least most of them are on the left side of the road, so they can see me coming.

Bikes: Lectric Xpedition.

Or you could just slow down a bit.

I'm riding MUPs while I'm trying to overcome the Halo Affect (or is it Halo Effect?) I go to the local MUP where my average moving speed is in the single digits because I don't want to tangle with little kids, moms with baby carriages, old folks in electric wheelchairs, old folks pushing walkers, and Moon Pie fed heifers walking three abreast, all of them having a perfect right to be there.

I was riding recently and came across three kids on their Little Pony bikes. A female jogger came from the opposite direction and yelled "J***** F****** C****" at the top of her lungs because she had to (gasp) slow down for three seconds. A classic a-hole affect on a woman with a classic a-hole effect.
