My first wife was like that. I spent too much time on the bike. I spent too much money on the bike and bike stuff. She even told everyone we knew that we had financial problems because of my cycling. We never paid a bill late. Always had savings. She was just a nutcase.

Did I mention I'm now very happily married to number three.

If she's going to fuss anyway, why not just take the longer rides?

Grow a pair. Tell her you'll be back from your ride when you're ready to come back and not before.
And you expect the laundry to be done and a hot bath ready, followed by a hot supper.
Of course her response to this is "I will be having sex in one hour.... whether you are here or not."

This can be in the form of dirty look, sarcastic comment, or outright guilt.

I try to make it a practice to ride only when we don't have family activities planned, or if it interferes with kids extra-curricular activities, my wife's work or my work. I have totally given up going on group rides because of this, and fly solo.

Nevertheless, unless I am gone <1 hr, I am made to feel like I've abandoned the family or killed the dog or something.

Maybe I'll take up running

Withold sex. She'll come around.

This thread reminds me of a conversation I had with my wife the other day as we're driving our minivan on the interstate. We get passed by a gorgeous deep blue Lotus. We both go "Wow." And then I say, "You know, Sweetie, you should be glad that I'm not into cars like I'm into bikes."

And she waits a beat, and says, "Nah, I'd actually think you'd be cooler if you were into cars."

Sheesh, whose idea was the minivan? There's a vehicle with "estrogen poisoning victim" written all over it.

Heaven forbid anyone design a vehicle that is actually somewhat practical for the lifestyles of the suburban families that own them. What were they thinking?

It was either a minivan or an SUV, but since I have a normal sized penis there was no point in getting the SUV.

I didn't mean to imply minivans aren't "practical" (station wagons were equally practical, in their day).

But they've never been mistaken for "cool"...and the fact that the poster's wife was dissing him about cars while they were driving a minivan is pretty ironic.

If the other half does not accommodate to the basaic needs of the other half, the marriage would not survive. Yes, you need make time for her necessities, too . But, that applies to you too. If couldn't get in my 4 hour ride once/ twice a month.( That is not asking too much, thank god i don't have that problem.). Well, My stares would outstare hers. I think you need to have a serious sit down talk and do some compromise.
My wife knows she can't deny me my neediest of needs. I'd be not fit to live with. Take up running. No way.

I'm still trying not to laugh aloud at this one! We won't even go into the implications on the driving performance of SUV drivers...

Easy answer.

Convert the wife.

I did. Ever since I built her a road bike, I no longer get grief when I go for rides, because she does to. Now, she realizes how nice it is to get out of the house on a quiet country road for an hour or two with no screaming kids. We take turns on the kids. Heck, sometimes we even hook up the trailer, and take the kids with us. I pull the kids. You'd be amazed how much of a workout you get pulling 100lbs of extra dead weight on the back with two kids cheering you on.

It is pathetic that anyone would even ask this question. The OP is eirther a troll or too p*ssy whipped to live a normal happy life, which is fine because he doesn't deserve one if he can't stand up for himself.

I am leaning toward this being a troll, but it could go either way. Still pathetic either way.

Partners need compromise, yes. But to forever forbid you from long rides. It would not be in my wife's best interest. She knows I get moody when I miss more than 3 days on the bike. We all need our private time, including her. Minimum number of four hour plus rides per month, 2. Absolute bottom line, unless for some uncalled circumstances changes things.
Not get in that minimum lengthy ride. All would suffer. After all some women pull the same gig. Get moody and *****y. I suggest best solution. COnvert her and get a kiddie trailer. Then she will understand.
