I have the opposite situation. I had bought a just finished 1934 Ford sedan street rod. 302 ford, auto trans, IFS, coil over rear suspension, 4 wheel discs, leather interior, the works. At a BBQ party we had, Mrs. busy body cornered my wife and was asking her why she let me have a car like that. Mrs. Bbody didn't realize I was standing behind her thinkin BIIITCH! Well, my wife told her that it's just a midlife crisis and it doesn't wear nylons, so it's OK with her. I was speechless. bk

What works is to occasionally remind the Missus that you don't golf like her friend's husband (and spends thousands on equipment, is gone all day, returns drunk, and has put on 30 lbs since they married), don't fish like her other friend's husband (same as above), don't hunt like her other friend's husband (same as above). You may spend thousands on equipment, but you're only gone half the day, returning sober, and now have thighs like bridge cables.

Well, I figure you should see if it is one of the following root causes-
1. you are slowly falling out of love again and starting to view each other as adversaries and thus the tit for tat comparison to each others private time begins or-

2. She really loves you a lot and is very insecure about you when you are out riding as she believes it is a dangerous activity and so when you get back attacks you as a release for all that pent up worry. I would take her on a few rides (even if they are slow) until she is comfortable with how you ride and she sees that neither of you have been hit by a car in this case, or perhaps discuss her feelings and see how you can work it out.

By the way I am not a psychologist or a counselor, nor do I play one on TV but I have been happily married for 13 years and know that true heartfelt communication from both sides is rarely a waste. Anyway, those are my thoughts. With love comes understanding usually but when love is stale criticism runs rampant in my experience.

Me I commute by bike to get my daily fix and do long rides on the weekend. I also try to take the kids biking a few times a week (or something else to get them out of her hair periodically). I find if I work to make private time for her she doesn't mind doing it for me.

My wife and I made an agreement about ten years ago. I would agree to provide food, clothing, shelter, education, and health care for the family. Furthermore I'll pay taxes, be active in the community, be involved in the kids lives, and help take care of the house. In return, I get to ride my bike when I want to ride.

Amen to this. Today is my 9th wedding anniversary and we have been together for 12 years. She knows cycling makes me happy and often urges me to go for a ride...she also knows cycling makes me both mentally and physically healthy. Hell she even has not even batted an eyelash at the $5k I have spent on cycling this year alone...of course I don't smoke, drink, gamble, mess around with others...

If your wife doesn't support cycling just based on the health benefits alone there are much bigger issues

Yeah, the EX, did I say that loud enough? EEEEEXXXXX always referred to bicyclists as my breathren.

Some samples from his foul mouth:

My breathren do not adhere to the laws of the road -- see that guy???? he didn't signal -- they aren't allowed to ride like that are they???

And why do you do that? Ick, you're all sweaty.

Hey whatever floats your boat.

Several years worth of that bull.

See ya.

And he's only only 37 yrs old and he was diagnosed 6 months ago with a quarter sized blood clot in his fluid enlarged heart - he's 60 lbs overweight, sits for 10 hours at a time on computer and has NO, absolutely NO health regimine - either eating or exercise. He mowed his lawn - was his exercise.

HA. Just sold him one of my bikes so he can now ride around the block as he struggles to lose the last 20 lbs - while he's on enough drugs to break up the clot, etc that they fill a Sunday-Saturday giant pill box.

And now he says he likes it, buttttt too late for him (with me anyway) - but hopefully he has developed a better lifestyle -- fortified by riding that two wheeled devil ...

I think you found the cause. How often does the wife get to go on 3 hours rides?

Dude take your balls out of your wifes purse & stand up for yourself.

My wife knows I ride & i never give her a lenght of time I'll be on my ride. I tell her a rough idea of my route & an estimate of how many miles I might ride in case something happens & she has to come find me in the event of an emergency. Otherwise she let's me ride where, how long & how far I want.

Men who think they are 'whipped' need to realize that, while most American men wear the pants in the family, THEY DO SO ONLY BY PERMISSION OF THE QUEEN! Such permission is revocable at any time. I learned this when doing collections work for construction contractors. A letter to the wife about how much we would enjoy foreclosing on the mechanics lien and having the family evicted from their home made it crystal clear to her that I was intent on messing up their financial life 'just for the fun of it'. This always brought instant action. Hubby had his orders to pay up before he could come home. All in a day of the life of a cynical attorney. The point; all wives are ball busters once in a while. bk

Just go to a women's lib convention where one of the speaking topics is porn stars.

This can be in the form of dirty look, sarcastic comment, or outright guilt.

I try to make it a practice to ride only when we don't have family activities planned, or if it interferes with kids extra-curricular activities, my wife's work or my work. I have totally given up going on group rides because of this, and fly solo.

Nevertheless, unless I am gone <1 hr, I am made to feel like I've abandoned the family or killed the dog or something.

Maybe I'll take up running
If you go out only once a week or only in moderation then it's time for a new wife. If that isn't an option how about trying to get her involved. I thank God for my wife every day. She has no problems with my extravagent habits. Good luck.

What does pornstars have to do with being penis-whipped? I think there is an equivalent female version, but it's more of an emotional thing. Like the chic that won't leave an abusive relationship and makes excuses for why she got beat up... why she "deserved" it...

Take 'penis-whipped' a bit more literally Danno ole pal - like getting smacked in the face with one, as in some of Howie Stern's stunts with porn stars, and you'll get it. Frack, if I gotta explain a one-liner, it's a flop.
