Sorry Chris for not getting back to you... busy early spring!

Avg speed for the team listing is based on total time and total distance so if you have not entered time for the majority of your rides, then start, it will be tough for you to display a correct overall avg speed. Not news you wanted to hear, but I hope this helps.

How is everyone else doing? The site had a huge growth in users and distance entered in March but it's slowed a little by mid April. Everyone getting out and riding in this warmer spring weather?

Hope all is well for everyone,
clint

Just a question, how is the average speed on activebody calculated? Say I record 50 minutes for today's commute. Will the annual total average speed reflect only the distance I rode in those 50 minutes, or will it try to divide the 6,000-odd km for the year by those 50 minutes?

I guess what I'm asking is, could I start recording average speeds now, and still have an accurate calculation on the website?

Chris L 04-15-04 04:25 AM

That's OK clint, I experiented and found that out myself. Not that I didn't want to display an average speed over 2,000km/h, but these cynics would never believe me!

You guys have been pretty silent lately... hope all is well.

I had time to finish up another new feature... bikers can now import (and have fields auto fill) a Polar HRM file. Find out more in the new help forum

Again, hope everyone is doing well.

Hi Clint,

I'm about to buy an altimeter. Any chance of a metric option for recording climbing?

clintthayer 04-30-04 04:43 AM

Yea, I have to make an edit to the pace function for metric stuff this weekend anyway... let me see what I can do.

Nice numbers on the site by the way... great job!

All is well... I've been plugging away and still updating my mileage. Just about to crack 1000 outdoor miles for the year to date. I never did bother to track trainer miles. With the warmer weather, I'm getting a lot more riding in these days. I have ridden every day since Saturday (2 weekend rides + 4 commute days), and have had what I think is my biggest week riding to date - over 180 miles.

Still really enjoying activebody.org - it's great to be able to click on the calendar and see how frequently I've ridden so easily!

Hi all!

I've just been plugging away commuting for the most part. I am thinking of doing a century in June so I should get off my back side and start training for that ride. There is also a 45 mile road race here in May that I was thinking of doing. However my longest ride to date is only ~26 miles. My weight has started moving downward again as I log the commuting miles. Slow, but steady.

Hope everyone is well.

Bob

I'm planning on riding in 3+ metric centurys' in June and I'm starting the commute to work as of Monday.

TXCiclista 04-30-04 02:34 PM

Curses! I better get on it. I thought I was just about to pass you too! LOL i am correct that you're "Gary Hammel", right? I was just starting to consider to whom you might make the check for your end of our little "bet". Now I hear "Commute" and "3+ metric centuries"? Ug. Gotta step things up a notch then :D I've got 2 metrics planned for the summer and I'm hoping to hit 400 miles/month by the end of May, but I fear that may not be enough ;)

Hee hee hee, I saw you creeping up on me. I haven't gotten out much this month but in May I plan to put on about 300 miles and 500 in June. Hey either way, a worthy cause will benifit.

...and yes I'm Gary

Thanks. If anything I've slowed a bit the last couple of months. I had the closing stages of the Tasmanian tour in January, and three centuries in February (two of which were in temps exceeding 40C), but alas, time constraints have hampered me just as the weather was improving!

Clint, Is there some way to print a calendar with the notes attached. Personally, I don't find the avg. speed to reflect my goals. (ha ha) What I mean is I may ride in a club ride where the speed is usually 20 mph once we get started. On a 28 mile ride, the first 3-4 miles are warm-up where the speed is 13-16, then after the ride, I'll add a few miles at 12-14 to cool down, so all the time and distance is used to calcuate the average. For training purposes, or just general tracking, I would like to see the progress as I move from winter speeds of 15 to spring speeds of 18-20 and later as I increase to 22-23 mph. Some days I lead a training ride at speeds of 12-16 and I don't want them recorded as my average. So I guess what I am trying to say is the average speed for all my rides is useless especially when I don't enter a time. What is more meaningful to me is in the notes, where I remark what the average speed of the ride is. Does this make sense to you? I may ride a century and show 18 as the average for the first 25 miles, and then 17 at the 50 mile point and 16 mph at the 75 mile point and 15mph as the average for the total century. I don't know if there is a way to print the notes like a journal, or do I have to do a "print screen" on each day? I don't want to cause you any work, just wondered if I should keep a journal.

I noticed you guys and gals have been putting on some miles...
Good job!!!
(Now how the heck can I catch up now.... :D :D :D)

TXCiclista 05-01-04 08:21 AM

Amen SinGate :)

clintthayer 05-01-04 12:56 PM

Good question. Let me think about it... Perhaps we could have a few different views of one month... Let me turn it over in my head but I like your ideas.

Done and DONE! :D

If you set your distance unit it should now show up in meters.

Thanks for the suggestion,
Clint

To be honest with everyone... a year ago I never thought 1000 people would like activebody but today we sit at 999 users have at least tried it. It started as a little side project for myself where I thought a few others might get some use out of it and now it's used by people all over the world. I'd like to thank everyone in this forum for using the site and getting the word out, with your suggestions and comments the site has really grown.

I think we passed the 1 year birthday some months ago but I just wanted to give my thanks...

So what happens in year 2? Much of the same for me... I work on the site when I have time... I'll try and get through the suggestions and thoughts others had but the funny thing is I've not done much work to promote the website... Perhaps if you know of others places (websites, bike shops, rides, print material) that would put a link to activebody, or write a little feature, or toss a little piece of paper in the "free stuff" of a big ride, or if any of you are on teams or clubs that have a website or a newsletter, getting the info around in different circles would really do the site well I think. The only thing I ask is that if you are successful; please pass word to me of the link so that I can check it out.

Also... if you feel that the site has really helped you, I love to hear about it... I'll even put it on the site for all to read about. Perhaps your success will inspire others to work hard to hit their goals!

Thanks again folks!
Clint

Thanks Clint. I love the site and the fact that you have been so willing to add better and updated features. I pass the word along all the time and do in fact have a link to your site on my personal website. While my site may not draw thousands of hits it does draw all my friends and family. I feel actually honored to have your banner on my site.

clintthayer 05-08-04 11:49 AM

Thanks man... all links are good links!

I wonder what kind of response rate the site would get if it Bicycling mag did a little story on the site... nothing huge, just a little thing in the fitness area...

If that were the case I think that would be the time to check your bandwidth limits.

clintthayer 05-10-04 11:44 AM

Yea, Not sure I could take the load, but it sure would be fun to see how bad it was. Just a few months after I kicked off the site last year there was a write up in the Washington Post about different sites that offer online logs... They did an ok job, but they finished the piece with a bullet listing all the sites they reviewed, but they miss typed activebody.org as activebody.net! DOH!!! I got a great deal of people from the article, but I really wonder how many I would have gotten if the article was correct.

Anyone else have ideas, websites, mags that we could get the site on? Anyone?
