WooHoo! 70 degrees forecast for Sunday! :D looks like I'll get a few in! Maybe 15?

clintthayer 01-23-04 01:52 PM

mmm... I dream of 70 degree weather... IN madison we are getting a couple inches of snow and it's chilly 8 degrees this morning (yesterday it was -3.

I still get my 6 miles in on the commute though...

As for making more teams... I say go with the bigger team.

SinGate 01-23-04 02:27 PM

Yep, Gary. I'm only getting miles in on my trainer. 30 minutes and about 7 miles at a crack. As Clint said it has been a bit chilly here -7 degrees yesterday with a -30 wind chill on my way in to work.
...and no I did not ride my bike in; unlike Clint I'm a coward when it comes to cold.

clintthayer 01-23-04 02:53 PM

Hey Gary, You going to the bike swap tomorrow?

SinGate 01-23-04 03:00 PM

No. I get everything I need at 5% above cost there would not be any point.
BTW I still have that $100 Gift Certificate available. ;)

IowaParamedic will be there though.

Looks great!

Great ride on Saturday. I hooked up with a group of Triathletes and rode up Pacific Coast Highway to Latigo Canyon, up and over Latigo (that's ten miles of climbing!) and a seriously fast descent down Kaanan back to PCH up to Trancas and then turn round and fly back to Santa Monica. All in all just over 65 miles in 3 hours and 42 minutes, but a great ride! The weather looked like in might drizzle on us up in the mountains but it held off and was kid to us!!

Peter

clintthayer 01-26-04 11:42 AM

Man that sounds like a fun ride..

snows falling in Madison (2-4 inch I think) but it was much warmer on the commute this morning (19). I only needed 2 layers!!!

I picked up a new home-made studded tire at the bike swap this weekend and it really has some grip in the new snow! I love it!!!

Also picked up a new xtr crank but it has not chain rings... anyone out these in the activebody world have a set of chainrings for a 952 xtr crank? Anyone?

I'm a coward when it comes to cold.
Good! I was afraid you'd be blowing me away during the cooler months. Nice to know you're a pansy about the cold weather like I am ;) Actually, it's not so much the cold as the wind. And since cycling automatically makes wind... :p

Idea for everyone:

I think we should kind of make the challenge series a "race". By this, I mean it might be cool if we all agreed to chip in a dollar (through payPal or maybe the mail) to the BikeForums Team winner of each challenge. We could make it a rule that you couldn't more than once a year. We could consider the Spring challenge to just be year-to-date 2004 since some people didn't add when the challenge started. Then we could go to basing future "races" on the actual challenge dates. What do you all think? Even if we only chipped in $1 each and only 10 people did it, that'd still be enough to buy some nice chain lube or something for the winner...

TXCiclista 01-26-04 01:13 PM

Awesome Peter! I didn't get wuite as much, but the temp hit 70 Sunday so I was able to pound out 25 miles in about 1:40. That was nice. Of course, it's back down in the 50's today, so I'm whimping out, inspite of my new leg warmers :)

clintthayer 01-26-04 01:32 PM

Sounds like a fun idea, but I can't manage this for you folks... you would have to make your own paypal account and manage it.

Fun idea though...

I've debated for a very long time to make a Paypal account for people that wanted to donate to the site. I've had a few people ask for one, but I've always felt the site should be free... Does a donation count? You tell me?

Well, I'm not actually advocating a "pool" (which might kill the idea). If someone acts as a treasurer, we could get into the "I sent you my money and you spent it on fries instead of giving it to Clint". By PayPal, I just meant that if the winnmer had a PayPal account, those of us with one could choose that option. The other could maybe mail a $1 bill. :)

As for ActiveBody.org, I really WISH you'd put up a donation link, or at least make an account that we could send money to. You could put up a "I don't ask for money for this site, but if you're on of those excessively generous people, I will accept a donation as long as it's clear that the site is still free." A few of us would be more than happy to send a buck or two your way. I understand your desire to keep it free and not solicit funds, but don't deprive those of us who want to contribute from the joy of doing so! :) And no, a donation does not "count" ;)

Leg warmers? at 50?

You must be kidding :D

When it gets to 50 is when I wear a long-sleeved Jersey with a hood. But leg warmers? Don't even own a pair!

(But I did just order some tights from Performance for below 50!)

:) :) :) :)

clintthayer 01-26-04 02:05 PM

Ahhh... good idea...

As for donations... if you (or others) want to send in a donation to activebody via PayPal you can use the email account

clint@thayernet.com

But I'm not asking for them. The site is healthy and happy and will remain free.

Coldest I've biked into work is -17 air, -40 wind chill. It was chilly enough for 3 layers that day! :)

Unfortunately, no. I'm a TOTAL wuss about anything below 60. Granted, in the 50's I just wear a jersey and single-layer arm and leg warmers, but that's only when I HAVE to get out (i.e. the last week in Dec when I'm trying to get to 1,000 miles). I'm a just a pansy when it comes to riding in cold weather. :p On the other hand, I live in TX, so 50 is a full 50 degrees colder than the hottest summer days when I DO ride. Heck, I'll do 30-40 on a 100 degree day, just not when it's below 60. :(

DnvrFox 01-26-04 03:35 PM

;) :) :D

60 is THE perfect riding temp.

But, we have days in the 100's also. I ride them, but I don't enjoy!

TXCiclista 01-26-04 06:06 PM

60? Really? I read somewhere that that's when you should start wearing knee warmers because of some physiological something-or-other and that the knees could be damaged by riding in weather that "cold". Not sure if that was true or not, but I DID read it ;)

The article must have been written by a southerner :D

I think our bodies acclimate to different temp ranges pretty well.

Your right there! D F.

We are lucky if we get an average of 60 two months of the Year around here

:D Probably. And since I'm a Southerner... ;) Anyway, today it's 40, so there's no chance I'm going out on ma bike :) If you can hack that kind of weather, you must have balls o' steel ;D

clintthayer 01-27-04 08:28 AM

It's just kind of funny... I can do -17, but 100 just seems way to "icky" to me. :)

Whooee!

9 more miles and I will hit 400 indoor and outdoor miles for the month! That will be a record for ANY January for me, and a good pace to keep at for a 5,000 mile year! That would also be a record for me. I have never gotten more than 3,500 miles previously.
