I just invited the people in this thread ( http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...088#post377088 ) to join in on the Bike Forum activebody team.

Lets see if anyone joins up... For you long time folks, please feel free to invite more people in.

Hmmm...as far as I know, there's no such thing as a "general avg". Calculating average speed for a group of rides by taking an average of each ride's average speed yields a number that doesn't have much statistical meaning unless all rides are the same length.

For instance, if I do the following rides:

5 miles, in 15 minutes (20 mph avg speed)
50 miles, in 5 hours (10 mph avg speed)

The Activebody site will show that I have a 15 mph average for those two rides (the average of the 20 and 10 mph averages).

But, my true average speed for those two rides (i.e., the arithmetic mean based on total distance and total time) is 10.476 mph. At least, this is the "average" that I think of when analyzing my cycling data over time.

I suspect that the "average of averages" approach will generally yield higher average speeds, because shorter rides tend to be faster, and we tend to do more short rides than long ones. While this might make me feel better :), it doesn't really reflect my true "average speed while cycling" across a given time frame.

got up to the 100Mi mark today but my knees have gone bust and are quite sore in the kneecap...and one tendon behind the right knee was cramping?! soo some more rest I think..... I've had too much of this bike...but look out when I have my new Cervelo (at this rate, within a few months!) and a proper bike fit.

Come on you people! get out,and ride.

As for my Prolog bike I refuse to log anything but "On the Road" milage..... If I am missing out so be it....

Well I guess I won’t be much help until spring. It’s –3 out this morning. I’m on the trainer until March or April sometime. I don’t keep track of mileage just hours and intensity while on the trainer.

DnvrFox 01-06-04 07:13 AM

Well, if I can't keep mileage on the trainer, I might as well just drop out.

It is the only way I can ride, and keeping this as mileage helps ME!

So, should I drop out?

Actually, I think I will just remove myself from the "team" as this is to help ME get better, and keep posting for my own benefit.

Thoughts?

I think that perhaps I will open up a "team" for those of us who WANT TO keep track of our trainer time mixed with our riding time.

Not all of us have the luxury of riding outside in the winter months. Has nothing to do with our ruggedness, manliness, etc., but time, work, location, weather, snow, family situation and cold all play a major part.

Thanks gary,

Good to see you join in the discussion. You make good points. Perhaps I'll change it and make everyone feel slower!

have a good one,

Denver,

I don't think you should leave the team. I consider miles as miles. I don't want to be the distance police so keep working on the trainer and keep putting those miles in. I also value your input on the site and really enjoy having you around.

Everyone,
Activebody is about motivating people to be active and I could care less what people do to keep active, just that they keep pushing themselves to do better.

As always, thanks for using the site and providing dialog,
Clint

Why not just add another column on the spreadsheet. You could have BOTH averages that way, and folks could choose which they liked to reference.

clintthayer 01-06-04 07:38 AM

Cool... it's pretty chilly here in Madison as well... brrrrr!

Just keep working!

Space on that table is a tight and I wonder if users would find it tough to understand. Though it's a good thought and I'll keep it in mind for the future.

Thanks,
Clint

Denver

I say stay in. I also put my trainer miles into activebody.org, which is made a bit easier since I have a rear wheel sensor on my computer.

Seeing all your mileage is motivation for me to spend more time on the bike, whether it's outside (unlikely except on weekends at the moment) or inside on the trainer.

Keep up the good work! :D

I'm for changing it too.

It's probably just the mathmetician in me talking, but the current average calculation doesn't really mean all that much to me.

With my remarks about trainers.

I was`nt aiming to upset anyone. By all means, log whatever form of cycling you partisipate in.

I`m perfectly aware that certain weather conditions make it very uncomfortable to ride outdoors.

One day last week I ventured out on an extremely cold morning, a couple of miles down the road and I told myself "sod this for a lark" and beat a hasty retreat for the warmth of my Sitting room...

No!. Its just from my own perspective, I prefer to differenciate from outdoor miles on the road to any indoor training.

Any one a member or familure with bike Prolog will recall a similar debate on what is considered appropriate mileage. The janitor of that site was considering a seperation mileage log of which we are still awaiting..Results pending!!!

Paul L. 01-06-04 10:02 AM

I find the trainer much harder than normal riding. If anything trainer miles should count more than less I think. Fortunately I don't have to use my trainer much.

clintthayer 01-06-04 10:34 AM

Hey Willic,

I have thought about putting in a check box that gives users the ability to say "don't count these miles" but I I'm still on the fence on that one.

I say we just keep turning the pedals and we will all be fit in the end.

Later,
Clint

cool, I'll give it some time to let others pipe in and then add it to the list of updates.

Thanks for the thoughts,

You are not kidding! I rode yesterday for the first time since hurting my hip in early October and all I could do on the trainer was 12.8 miles an hour. I thought that can't be right, I average in the area of 20 mph on the road, so i checked my spreadsheets from last year and sure enough I average in the area of 12 to 13 mph on the trainer, and it's a tough workout.

I never posted trainer miles before as I thought "these are not real miles", but I got to thinking about it and Clint is right miles are miles. My computer is hooked to the rear wheel and thus I know exactly my distance and speed so I'm posting them as road miles. It is -1 with a -20 wind chill today and I can't go out in this kind of weather (not to mention that the road salt and sand are bad for my bike and dangerous for me).

I hate bringing my low trainer average speed with me this year as I know it will kill my average for the year, but what can I do? Any time on the bike is good!

Look out for me in the spring if my hip holds out I think I may finally be able to beat up on some teen age Tri-boys I ride with. I was close last year; this year they are mine!

-Gary

--hum was thinking, maybe a new catagory for trainer miles with a seperate "Challange Series" attached to it. That would modivate me......

We should keep a note that the Bike Forums team everyone is using is

Team: Bike Forums
Password: cyclista

Perhaps Carl can go back and edit the first post to help people that are just finding this thread for the first time.
