Since you don't have a location listed in your bio, would you give us a clue as to where all these creatures are found?
Hey,
Wildlife? The extent of wildlife that I've seen is a few chipmunks and birds. An occasional squirrel. Even fairly deep into the woods I've yet to see even a deer. Consider yourselves lucky.
Anyone in the Northeast US see much wildlife?

Saw a dead hedgehog beside the road on my commute today. They are pretty rare here in Sweden, therefore itīs sad they often gets runned over when theyīre looking for food on the roads. I believe itīs always sad when animals dies, not just dangered species, thatīs why Iīm a vegetarian

Last Wednesday and Thursday I rode through the Assiteague national wildlife refuge. Perfect in that it was evening wed. then early Thur. morning before I went to a meeting on Wallops Island. Anyone visiting Virginia's Eastern shore should go have a look. It's a fee area, but bikes are free!

Isn't that where the wild ponies are? Did you see any? Originally posted by joeprim

Yes I saw a couple of the wild ponies, but only a couple I was woundering where the rest were. I saw lots of the little Sika deer, and of course all maner of shore birds. This time I did not see a red fox usually I see a couple of them.

I saw a bear and two cubs on my weekend camping trip, as I biked from Perch Lake to the Brule River.

Wow inkwolf, thats really cool. I was lucky enough to see a huge barn owl on todays ride, it flew right above me, and had a wingspan of 4 feet, was amazing. I wish i had a camera.

Yes, JohnBoston, there is wildlife in the area. I live 15 miles from downtown Boston. Deer, racoon, oppossum, skunk and wild turkeys are regulars on my commute. I've seen as many as 14 deer on a one-way trip. Less commonly seen are coyotes, fox, woodchuck(population way down with the increase in coyotes) and otter. There are rumors of bobcat and bear, but you couldn't prove it by me. When I worked in the Northend of Boston I used to see raccoon on the waterfront. Just keep riding in the early morning or dusk hours and you will see wildlife.

Lately feral pigs have been coming into the area surrounding my subdivision. Anybody seen these things? I'm wondering if they'll see a cyclist and take chase. There are about 150 or so, I'm told, that live in an adjacent wildlife refuge. At least the bobcats, alligators, and coyotes mind their own business. But I have no idea what to expect from these wild porkers.
foxes, dolphins, sting rays, manta rays, senior citizens and wild parrots. Both the senior citizens and the parrots sqawk and make an awful noise. Not all seniors sound like this. Just Boca seniors.
The dolphins have been hanging about a lot lately and it seems to be the same squad that shows up wherever I happen to be. We seem to like the same stretches of beach.
There have also been a couple dead flying fish. Hope I don't run into any sharks! My rides usually end with a swim in the big pond.

Recently I've seen: wild rabbit; canada warblers; giant black-backed gulls; kingfishers; cormorant; woodpecker;garter snakes; painted turtle (moved it out of the way of bikes) and beluga whale (in st lawrence). The whale was hard to see- I saw something surface and blow water, and it was white. If it were black it would be a harbor porpoise.
as in my previous post on this thread
1 or 2 Rednecks
Did see the following lately:
Redtail hawks
Grackles (I hate em)
Turkey Buzzards (at least we call em that)
1 large dead rattlesnake
1 small dead rattlesnake
1 large aggressive wolf spider (little sh*t nailed me
the other morning as I was gettin ready to ride)
Mosquitos (mostly at HHH)
cattle egret (almost typed ergo there).
guinea fowl
OceanRider, I'd love to see shark which reminds
me I haven't been diving in way too long.

An occasional Javalina, frequently Jack Rabbits, rarely a Coyote and most enjoyably, small families of Quail.

lotek, there are grackles around here too. They're pretty common I guess. Why do you hate them?
For me it's pigeons I hate- they stand in the road and I fear running over them. Anyone who lives in a city hates pigeons. They used to drive me nuts and wake me up in the morning- sometimes I wish I had a gun and I could shoot them! Which is shows how nuts they drove me because I would never get a gun or shoot an animal, even pigeons. But I hate them anyways! Fortunately, you don't see them on rides once you get out of the city.

All right, for some reason, I have never read this post previously and I take it some of you don't care much for old Steve-O. Think of it this way, what would be the chance that you would be able to see a king cobra up close, or a komodo dragon, or many animals in their natural habitat without guys like Steve? I know there are zoo's but come on, how natural can it possibly be? Here in St. Louis, we have one of the best zoo's in the USA, but still many of the animals look depressed. (wouldn't you???)
Another guy is Jeff Corwin. He is very good at finding animals in their natural habitat. You can learn so much about animals from these folks. Education is important to conservation. You must know about the animals, their habitats and behaviors to understand conservation. No I am not a member of PETA and I do fish and my s/o hunts. No I am not backwoods, I understand that the deer population has to be controlled, same with fish. How do people think our ancestors survived? We wouldn't be here unless they ate!!!! They didn't have tofu back then!@!!!!!!

See lots of deer near the ol' homestead...on the road I see mostly dead remains of opossum, skunk, rabbit...none alive, though...plus the occasional cow, horse, rabid bike eating dog...and several varieties of birds...plus the many rednecks in their hot rod pick up trucks...
For the record, I like Steve-o and that other guy too...fascinating places they visit...

This morning I saw a roe deer and a hare. The roe deers donīt seems to mind being in a city as long as they have some bushes and other vegetation to hide in at daytime. Maybe they move out of the city in the morning hour. Perhaps I caught this one when he was on his way out of the city, like me

Yesterday I saw a baby killdeer--cute! It looked like a little fuzzball on stilts running along the road, as its parents tried to lure me in the other direction.....
BTW, looking over previous posts, I like Steve Irwin, too. I think his enthusiasm is genuine and the 'act' you see on the camera is the real Steve. Apart from the work he does with animals, you gotta admire someone who hasn't had the enthusiasm and goofiness trained out of him at his age. I think Steve Irwin behaves the way a lot of us really wish we dared to.

Two weeks ago did a 3 day trip starting on west side of Kilimanjaro and riding west down into the rift then back to Arusha. Saw eland, zebra, wildebeast, grants and thompsons gazelles, giraffee, impala, gerenuk, etc and 3 bull elephants 100m away. Gets harder and harder to see elephant outside of parks every year. What we saw was elephants from AMboseli park in Kenya coming out during the wet season.
