It must be inside of three hours, now.

Let us know how it went for you.

You've got an army rooting for your speedy recovery, Coach!

Hoping the mechanics did their job Racer X. X-rays of my two ankle fusions are nice ice breaker at parties.

Still on vacation along the Allegeny River in PA. Yesterday was a decent day on the river. Leaves are just beginning to change colors. Managed to catch three walleye for a future dinner!

I also saw something for the first time and probably never again. A guest and I were fishing and we saw a Bald Eagle dive, take a fish then drop it. It then flew around and grabbed it again but the fish was too big to fly away with it. The eagle then crashed back into the water and couldn't take off. After a couple tries to fly it decided to do a butterfly stroke 55 yards or 50 meters (however you count) back to shore. Once on shore it flapped its wings a couple times then flew off.

I do have cell phone video but can't share yet. You'll need to trust me on this.

Impressive, though i wonder how a bird does swimming strokes in water. I used to live sorta close to the Allegeny, in Morgantown, WV. Some really great scenery in that part of Appalachia

He woke to his name, the fluorescent glare dimmed not unlike the time he had hiked up Thomas Creek Holler and there was a fire on the ridge, the smoke wafting down and landing on the trail, obscuring the aspens in the half light of the noon day sun.
He knew where he was, and that he would not be on the trail anytime soon, crunching the fall leaves underfoot, with the sweet smell of decay in his nostrils. Looking down the bed he could see one leg encased in a white stocking, the other wrapped in a pale tan bandage. He thought perhaps if he counted the edges of each wrap, he might know the hours he had been asleep.
She had put him in this place. It was not out of malice, he thought. They will be the way they will be, and there was no changing that. Perhaps if he had been more steady, or more careful, the fall would not have been so hard. Still it was over between them. He could no more look at her again than he could undo what had happened. “What’s done is done and a man can’t do no more” he thought to himself.
The women who had called his name approached the left side of the bed. She wore a uniform, not unlike a waitress, but with pant instead of skirt, and with no nametag stating a name like Thelma, or Lena. There would be call for it, no refills of coffee needed or more cream in this place.
“Is she here?” he asked, not looking at her but off into the distance.
“Your wife?” she replied, glancing sidelong at his left hand, looking for verification that this was the case. He wore no band, not because of the lack of license or ceremony, but that a man who works with his hands cannot afford to lose a finger to such a thing.
“That’d be her” he answered, still not looking at her.
“She’s speakin to the Doc right now, but I’ll go fetch her soon nuf”.
He lay silent for a moment.
“Ma’am, if you don’t mind my asking”
She paused for a moment, busying herself with a clipboard.
“I suspect it went well enough. The foot will stay on. The hardware store will be bit out of stock though. Doc will speak with you more about that. Got any pain?”
“Some”
“Well, we can fix that up a piece”
He rolled his head over and saw the device was still taped to his hand. She grabbed a syringe and screwed it in to the device, as she had done so often before. She pushed the plunger down and he felt the warm rush across his chest.
“Diluaded” he said, more a statement than a question.
“How’d y’all know?”
“Had three shots the day this done happened”
The thoughts from that day began to sprout, and he stomped them back into the soil from which they had sprung. Perhaps in time that patch of dirt might be useful, but for now he would let it lay fallow.
His pain began to lessen, like after that third shot of homemade whiskey from the still he kept up in the holler. It would be another thing he would miss before winter came.
He looked up and saw his wife standing by the bed.
“Doc says the foot’ll stay in place”
“So I hear”
She paused for a moment, looking down at the device taped to his hand. She spoke quietly yet firmly:
“So you’re done with her.”
“I reckon that is the case”
He thought of the can sitting by the curb, the ladder, his ladder sticking out wistfully.
She had put him in this place. It was not out of malice, he thought. They will be the way they will be, and there was no changing that.

Cliff Notes:
Surgery went well. 4 screws. 7-10 days on my back to help with swelling and minimize blot clots. Spending my time reading too much Faulkner.

"Did the ladder beat you?" the boy asked.

The man rolled from his bed, placing the broken foot into his boot.

"No. A ladder is only a ladder, no matter it's nobility. No ladder can beat a man"

He rose from the bed and steadied himself for a moment. "I do not know if I speak the truth to the boy", he thought. "The absinthe has dulled the pain but not the memory".

He looked at the boy, who's face was too familiar.

"Take the gun from the mantle. The fine one with the engraving that my father and your grandfather left me and I will leave you. And bring me one bullet. Today we will take the measure of the ladder"

Moved on to some Hemmingway.

Haha I almost sent you a text today asking if you had made it out alive. One of my work collegues had me change it to 'how are you feeling?' She said it sounded more positive.

I think it would be most amusing for the rest of us if you went Vonnegut on us.

Congrats to your pit crew for doing a fine job! The pain from the screws will sometimes be intense but livable. Two ankle fusions and half bucket of hardware allows me to make an expert opinion.

Hopefully you won't need all the pain pills that are given. I was worried about getting addicted and noted the time of each pill taken on my iPhone. Just laying in bed for days allows time for that. Once I got beyond 6 hours between pills I went to over the counter meds. I still have a bottle with 40+ pills which has a great street value that could buy some nice bike bling.

I was actually off pain meds entirely for 2 days before the surgery. Night after I took a couple of Percocet. Yesterday I was just taking OTC stuff until the evening when things got pretty sore.

Was making it through the night okay until I had a dream that I was racing Cleave in a crit on some weird slippery gymnasium like floor. I was sliding out and had to put my foot down. I jerked my leg in my sleep and holy cow did that hurt.

Had a second dream where I jerked my leg and I was back on the Percocet. Then a third dream. Me and my subconscious are going to have to have a long talk.

I'll need to reread my Vonnegut. In the meantime Milo Minderbinder has cornered the market on Egyptian ladders...

Well, my SRM will be sent in for a new battery and tune up. I will be on my backup bike.

In other news...my sinus lift surgery was successful and I get my implant in a couple of weeks. Once the implant takes, an abutment can be placed and then a crown put on by my dentist.

My new car has been delayed until December as the EPA continues its tests. Nothing out of the ordinary including slow very slow, did I say slow action by the EPA.

Just seems odd that the EPA needs to take a long time to evaluate an electric car.

It is not an all electric but a plug in hybrid. It has 10 Kwatts of lithium batteries. It generates 435 hp of which 95 hp is electric. It can be plugged in and charged so that one gets about 16 miles from the electric charge. Once one is on the road, the gas engine operates as required however, there is an option to run the car in the electric mode only.

So the EPA has to check emissions that include carbon. It got its NOx testing this month and next month they test carbon. One would wonder why not just test the car and be done for all tests and release to customers.

Today, all the hybrids are stored in a bonded warehouse while the testing is being done.

How are you doing with your Symfony IOL lens?

Nope. I got a newish-to-the-US intraocular lens with the brand name of Symfony. It was FDA-approved last Jan but prior to that had been extensively used in Europe. I'm not sure about Medicare but my health insurance does not cover the cost of this lens, the IOL itself is an out of pocket expense.

The standard IOLs are monofocal, which means they correct your vision at either near, intermediate or far distance. You pick, and then wear glasses for the rest. Really good near-vison correction is difficult to accomplish with any IOL so most people correct far or intermediate distance.

There are available IOLs that are bi or tri focal lenses, just like eye glass lenses. The problem with them is that at the interface between each part of the lens, you get a little light refraction, which gives you more of that halo effect you were trying to get rid of with the surgery in the first place.

I don't fully understand the optics of the Symfony lens but it's not built like a standard trifocal lens. Somehow it gives you trifocal vision (supposedly) without having three different prescription strengths in different parts of the lens- instead it uses the overall shape of the lens with some ability to shift the color prism towards pinks/blues as light comes in your eye. The result is trifocal vision without refraction/halos. (That may be a terrible explanation, I'd have to go back & study optics a bit to speak more intelligently on the subject.)

My general approach to life is to avoid the early generation of anything. So by that principle, I would typically avoid something like this Symfony lens. But the European experience swayed me, plus the prospect of being able to race my bike sans glasses. I'm used to wearing glasses otherwise so that didn't seem like too big of a deal to me.

I knew from pre-op conversations with my surgeon that this lens I chose would possibly not correct vision well at near distance & I might need reading glasses. It just wasn't on my radar that it would make my near-vision worse. Hopefully this is temporary but from what I understand of the lens it may not be. I really just have to see where things are in a week & talk to my surgeon about it then.
Hey there Healthpack, saw your post from a google search and decided I would make an account here to look for some advice. I'm an avid biker and had rapid growth of cataracts from a complex health issues at the age of 26 now. I really like the Symfony lens compared to other basic monofocal lens because it has more range from distance to intermediate / and also some near. Which would be extremely useful for my active lifestyle playing sports and mountaik biking/ surfing etc. I'm just worried that the Symfony although more new may come with lots of unwanted visual side effects. & like you, I am a bit concerned with the "newer" technology because theirs a lot more risks and possibility something may be a bit more difficult to get great results vs sticking to the tried and true approach of monofocal lens. Also worried about the Symfony in terms of night time vision in photophobia and halos/rings around bright lights. I've been reading a lot of reviews of other people saying they have problems with driving at night with Symfony. How has your eyes been holding up later down several months after the eye surgery. Would really appreciate your experience and input coming from another biker. Would you recommend this lens for somebody that is concerned about halos/rings/glares and light sensitivity. Looking forward to hearing back from you

Overall my vision is much improved with the news lenses.

I do have halos around bright lights in the dark but I drive just fine at night without glasses and I also ride my bike in the dark routinely with no problem. I notice the halos more on the bike, but it's not a huge problem.

I can't really say whether the Symfony lenses were worth the extra cost, because I don't know what the monofocal lenses would have been like.

I do need reading glasses, so although the near vision has improved post op, it never became a no-glasses level of good. However for intermediate & far vision, I'm now 20/20. It's pretty incredible really. I can't complain. For most of human existence, I would have gone blind.

Shortly after my surgery, I watched a documentary on the Himalayan Cataract Project. The moment where people had their post op bandage removed and realized they could see- magic! I made a donation in honor of my eye surgeon.
