Damn! Bad karma just paid me a visit.

Got the front wheel buried to the QR in a bridge expansion joint. Luckily I was only moving at about 2 MPH, but still... sudden stop followed by endo and me flying off the bike, of course.

A picture of the worst damage is posted to Twitter--be forewarned, it wasn't the bike. If you like crimson, forge ahead.

I did have to true the wheel a little. And while I was at it, I tore the hub down and repacked the bearings (Shimano hub that uses loose balls and cones.

gotta tell us which bridge, I hate those metal grate bridges with openings just big enough for a tire to fall in.

I thought I had a bad day when a train was blocking my way home and had to take a detour. I got it good compared to that.

Anyway, it was the train bridge just before Route 40 at the intersection of 40 and Middle River Rd--commute route.

It took me completely by surprise to all of a sudden have the ground fall out from under me.

It was mostly my fault, though.

Cars were blocking the right side of the road while they waited for a red traffic light, so I made a left behind a truck so that I could pass the blocking vehicle(s) to the left, then pull back to the right as I filter forward to do a trackstand at the light, then make the right turn on to Rt 40 (SOP). As I was looking left to make sure that I didn't pull out in front of vehicles coming from the left I didn't see the gap in the road.

I'm glad both wheels didn't slip in or I might have had to deal with a bent or broken rear derailleur.

Making my first attempts at rebuilding a wheel. I've taken the hub off of my rear HED Jet 50 since the hoop for it is hosed. The plan is to take the Neuvation carbon wheel apart and replace it's hub (which is also hosed) with the HED hub. I'm trying to decide whether I want to redo the Neuvation with bladed spokes.

This will be interesting. Will I have enough nerve to ride that wheel once I get it back together?

I'll probably have the wheel looked at by a LBS to ensure that it's sound.

If it works out, I may start building wheels from scratch--always wanted to learn how to do that.

Bummer about your crash. Heal up, I assume you're in a car today. Me too as I am fighting a low grade flu. It's not preventing me from working but slowing me down.
I've wanted to build wheels as well. I've replaced as many as 4 spokes at 1 time. That's about as close as I have ever come.

I drove today and have hours of extra time on my hands. Wish I rode though, the leaves on the trees are peaking. Would have been a wonderful fall ride.

NR, that feeling of sudden surprise was probably the worst of it. Did anybody stop and offer to help?

Well, I don't need to commute so I do the next best thing and ride my mtb to the gym to spin, do weights, etc. Also to see people since I'm in solitary confinement all day. I figure enough times up Bellemore during the winter should get me some climbing strength.
Did a road ride on the Madone yesterday and I'm still getting serious creaking. Time to go back to Joe's for a new frame. Everything else is great but when I get out of the saddle and apply torque I get creak.

I know a guy who is getting a copy of that Race Across the Sky DVD, so I'll post when I hear that it's in. Anybody get out to see it?

Yes, about the surprise... I was on my feet before anyone else could do anything. The guy in the car behind the truck that I passed behind (and in front of the car) looked out his window in curiosity as to why I fell and I pointed at my bike doing a headstand in the road. Then I said to him, "I betcha I can't do that again if I tried."

I pulled the front wheel out of the gap and decided that someone up above is telling me to do something different, today. So, I rode down the sidewalk instead.

Today, I was back to normal. Cars left room along the right edge and I filtered through up to the light (it's usually red); trackstand; turn right on to Rt 40.

I should have road the side walk across the hanover street bridge a little while ago, I decided after work to head to the inlaws (hanover st-waterview-annapolis rd)

First I forgot my bike shoes (drove to work,left car), so on the hanover bridge I hit the metal grating, both wheels are sliding left to right, bridge is wet, then the bridge has little nothces all over it so matter how I rode the tires moved, I was just thankful I didn't fall, cars were flying past me.

Maybe next time I'll just take ostend to washington blvd, anyway I should end up w/20+ wet miles today, gonna eat some pizza and then roll on home.

Josh, glad to hear you survived. I forwarded your note to the city, hopefully they well do something about it. The bike budget is spent for this year but maybe next year.

Didn't ride today. Instead, I fuhtsed-around with this thing:



It's laced 2x on both sides.

I tried to tension the spokes, but it was terrible--big hop and it wasn't true. I got close truing it, but I could not get rid of the hop--an indication that the hub is not centered properly within the hoop.

I ran out of patience with it. I may have to get a truing stand or just let Joe's Bike Shop or Princeton Sports tension it.

I tried a cyclocross race today. I dnf'd but learned a lot and got rid of the first race jitters. I probably shouldn't have done the one hour spinning class and run on Saturday because apparently you need everything you got for cross. I pulled myself out of the race after I was lapped and felt I was in the way, though after watching the next race I realized that there are some really slow and rather heavy riders who just plod along. I think I'll do some practicing and try it again. Some people from Meadowbrook do Wed evening practices.
I don't have a cross bike, was going to use my mtbike but it's full suspension and would have been awkward on the runs. I took everything off my Trek touring bike including water bottle cages, slapped on some cx tires, and it's a cross bike. A tad heavy and the geometry aint great for racing, plus it has bar end shifter which are awkward when you're going all out. Cyclocross is basically 40 minutes of pure all out red line. I'm glad I pulled out because when I got back to the car my chest was killing me. I have an issue when going really hard in cold wet weather where my lungs get all full of crap. A friend of mine who is also prone to bronchitis said he has an inhaler and uses it before working out during cold months. Something I need to look into if I'm going to attempt this again.
