monday i started out in muir woods and rode up dipsea trail to pantol ranger station where the dirt met the route for the tour of california. It took me an hour and change to get up it and 5 or 6 minutes down:D
clicky for a few minutes of the racers going over the top of the first hill |

BTW, that section of the Dipsea is a poach. Big fine but the rangers were probably busy with crowd control. |
I just rode the Ken Burton trail in the Angeles National Forest north of L.A. It was my first time on the trail, which was built by an mtb group with mountain biking in mind. The trail has (i) 1.2 miles on paved road with no elevation change, (ii) 5.6 miles on a fire road uphill with about 2000ft of elevation change (I think), (iii) 2.4 miles of very tight and overgrown singletrack with loose rocks, drops, etc., with about 20 switchbacks (this is really the Ken Burton trail, the other stuff are other parts of other trails), (iv) 3.6 miles of everything from singletrack, rocky areas around a river (baby heads and rock gardens), fire road and paved road, and over 10 stream crossings.
It was a great and scenic trail, I'm bummed I didn't have a camera. Very tiring though, and pretty technical. So Cal is great, I'm always amazed at how close LA is to nature. Edit: It took me about 3.5 hours to do the whole thing (one of my longer rides, mileage wise). Edit: Actually, to see better pics of the trail than I would've taken, check out singletrackmind.com at: http://www.singletrackmind.com/Trail...ia%20Index.htm |
Today I took my friends Sm A-line down some snow trails. Oh man, that was fun, the step sections were so easy to just fly down.

i went out to fort dupont park in anacostia, southeast washington dc on sunday. there's about 8 miles of hike/bike trail that goes between several forts that were constructed to defend the district in case of an invasion during the civil war.
i found the trails quite challenging, lots of short ups and fast downs. i would recommend this trail for just about anybody looking to explore that area. i know anacostia is kind of a rough neighborhood but i never felt unsafe. the indications that you're in a city are really minimal. no action shots, you guys have photo skills far beyond my point and click strategy, but here's one to give you an idea of the area: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/128/4...5d601498f4.jpg and no, none of them is me. |
1) trail - Marrington Plantation
2) ride time - 1 hour plus commute on bike 3) miles - 12 miles plus commute 4) weather - warm and sunny 5) trail conditions - mostly dry with a few muddy spots 6) summary - Started todays ride in the "PIT". A chunk of ground dug out for landfill that gives us bikers good drop ins. Hit the trail hard, tackled both teeter totters on trail and smashed through the mud holes. Great ride after a day of annoying work. |
Headed out on Saturday because everything was melting and we needed to get our first REAL mountain ride in this year (because pushing in the snow doesn't count).
We were planning on doing Powderface Creek/Prairie Creek loop but it turns out that there was too much snow on the Powderface Trail so we did an out and back on Prairie Creek trail. Weather was nice...sunny and about 10C but clouding over later in the ride. The trail was a mixture of snow, ice, mud, rock, with the rare dry section. I'm glad I kept the studded tires on for the ride... My first ride of the year.
Last time i was on a bike outside of my basement was November 18. Distance: about 10km, just around the paved trails in my city. Temp: 1 degree, with about 50km/h winds. It was cold. Pics: Pretty tame. Another sweet weekend of riding.
Friday- A longer loop at Auburn. If anyone is familiar with the area: Stagecoach>Flood Trail>Mossy Ridge>Fuel Break>Culvert>Confluence. No pictures. After that, went out to the local DJ's (same ones as below) w/ some buddies from work. Nice and chill, Josh was hitting 3's all night. i didn't get any pictures, unfortuanetly. Sunday- DJ's from work, couple pictures below: Lay of the Land: http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...irotto/DJ1.jpg Ryan on little double: http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...irotto/DJ3.jpg Nomad? http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...irotto/DJ2.jpg |
Some pics from urban riding on Saturday...but I forgot to take pics when we were at a couple of places...
http://members.shaw.ca/johartman/ima...eh070317-1.JPG http://members.shaw.ca/johartman/ima...eh070317-2.JPG I got a lot of pics at one little drop: http://members.shaw.ca/johartman/ima...eh070317-3.JPG http://members.shaw.ca/johartman/ima...eh070317-4.JPG http://members.shaw.ca/johartman/ima...eh070317-5.JPG http://members.shaw.ca/johartman/ima...eh070317-6.JPG I should be getting pics from the snow-cross race on Sunday in the next few days. |
I didn't go to work today so I went riding instead. Just hit the trails around my house. It was supposed to be below freezing until the afternoon so I headed out before it got too warm. People have been riding while everything has been thawing and there are some great ruts everywhere.
I was by myself so instead of using the timer, I just captured video...hence the crappy quality. http://members.shaw.ca/johartman/ima...eh070319-1.JPG http://members.shaw.ca/johartman/ima...eh070319-2.JPG http://members.shaw.ca/johartman/ima...eh070319-3.JPG http://members.shaw.ca/johartman/ima...eh070319-4.JPG http://members.shaw.ca/johartman/ima...eh070319-5.JPG http://members.shaw.ca/johartman/ima...eh070319-7.JPG http://members.shaw.ca/johartman/ima...eh070319-8.JPG |

Got out to Bennet Gap in Pisgah with Hambone. Hit a super sketch logride. The pics make it look tame. The weather was sunny and 75. Great ride!

Today was a gorgeous day. It was sunny and above freezing so I decided to unpack the garage. All my summer stuff is crammed into a corner during the winter so that I can drive into it. Since I don't expect any more deep-freeze temperatures everything got unpacked today. This is the closest I got to a first ride. My daughters taking their rides out for the first time this year. Yes, they take their looks from their mother. No fill flash was used in these pictures for those who are curious. http://stradasystems.com/mtb/images/DSCN3981.jpg http://stradasystems.com/mtb/images/DSCN3982.jpg |
