Rode Thomson again today. I've decided not to ride it again until I get my new bike, it's just getting irritating on my current bike. But the ride as a whole was awesome!!! Might head up to either Thomson or the Pig Trail this weekend.

Ive got the day off today so looks like I may be heading to River Legacy. I may pick up a new seat post with some kick back on it before hand though so I can actually sit down from time to time.

Alright never. This was from another thread but I thought I'd do a little followup here. Yes it was an XC ride. Turned out to only be 16 miles or so (according to my none-too-precise GMaps Pedometer calculations). About 3 mi. of residential streets to get to the trail, 10 mi of mostly singletrack and about 3 mi. back to the shop. I think the guys hunted out ever climb they could find :twitchy:. But I didn't end up walking any more than the single-speeders did :). And got one descent that made it briefly worth being on the big bike. All-in-all a fine way to spend a 90+ degree evening.

Woot First time riding today and it was awesome.
Bike Trek 4500
Route: http://sdmba.com/index.php?option=co...ask=view&id=63
I spent 2-3 hours riding aimlessly over rocks up hills. it was awesome.

but I have a question I was going in low gear up a hill and my rear tire was spinning like crazy I tried to get to better ground but same so I ended up hopping off and walking up the hill :( any ideas to fix my situation?

[hwy]Hagen 08-07-09 06:46 PM

oh and my butt really hurts

born2bahick 08-07-09 06:52 PM

Lemme see, the "blanket" response would be Velociraptor rear tire and Brooks saddle.

Well, I here I am sitting in a cabin at Lake City in Colorado. While I've not gotten to do as much MTB as I would like, what I have gotten to do has been sweet. A week or so I got a huge ego boost. I rode with out having to walk all of Dutch creek in Durango (which one of the locals said is probably the second most technical trail in the area). Nothing beats an 6-8 mile decent. Then here I've ridden something called Camp Trail. Fun trail, all up then all down. Steep and techy at the top, no brake fast and flowy at the bottom. And tomorrow we're going to drive some parts of the Alpine Loop in a rented 4 door jeep. I'm still a bit dead from some hiking, so it sounds like it'll be some shuttle assisted jeep road downhilling. And in a few more days I'm going to be riding out at Hartman's Rock. Plus, right before I left, I recieved a go pro chest mount. Sadly, the more techy part of dutch creek was ruined by a flapping strap infront of the lense (you can still see a bit but its anoying; I fixed it for the other videos). Fairly cood view.

On another note, Ft. Leasure in Durango looks like a really nice school. Plus even the out of state costs are fairly close to that of Ohio's in state costs...

Lower the tire pressure in your tires..

your bike prob. came with connection trail tires? they pretty much suck, I had them. Up grade to a more aggressive tread later on...

Your butt hurts because:
A: your saddle is not right for you.
B: You're not used to riding, and just need time to "adjust" or get used to it.
C: You're sitting down at the wrong times.
D: all of the above.

lol

-_RebelRidin'_- 08-09-09 02:38 PM

Went for a ride today, earlier in the week I was riding around and saw a sign that said

"Berg" with a picture of something by it. Told my friend about it and he said sure lets go look, he took his 24'' wally world dual suspension mongoose out for a ride lol. (offered him the trek, he didn't take it... maybe next time he will.)

Anyway, upon getting to a sign theres a castle picture on the side.

Berg means Mountain. there's castle ruins atop a "mountain" locally here... I was wondering if this was the trail to get there. So we climb... and climb and climb.... take a break... climb some more.... We climbed for a good hour at a good pace, until we finally got to the top of this dang thing. Along the way there were all kinds of side trails and cool looking trails. We get to the top to find an Old Cross with german words and the dates 1880-1999 on it... I have no clue.... and an even older sign that read "Schlossberg" <--- 2 KM" Meaning Castle Mountain... or Castle on the mountain.... But with daylight practically gone we didnt have time to venture on.... we rode down the massive hill we went up, had a blast (it was mostly double track and reminants of old logging road... I didn't want to take the serious trail, I didn't know his skill level at the time" rode the whole way to the bottom....... Had my disks so hot went we stopped I could smell the disks heating up and could feel the heat waves on my legs lol..... It got rid of some of my Squelch Problemo =) lol.

Over all good ride... really good exercise. We found this trail on top of the "Berg" we had climbed, thats marked in german, it starts at the top and looks like it goes the whole way down... all single track... We're going back tomorrow when we have more daylight (we left at 7:30 pm today) to investigate, and we also want to find the Schlossberg.

I had my camera today, but it was dusk and darkish out and hardly any pics came out..

theres this one area I was to hit up, its prob. 15-20 feet high or so, and its got a steeeeeeeeeeeppppp drop down area, and you can either drop off the whole thing, or go diagonal and step down the whole way till you get to this rock, and then drop down 3 feet.

looks like a potential movie area =)

overall, I seem to have found some interesting stuff..... and Its a lot more secure having a riding buddy..... we had a few National Guard guys get jumped and the crap beat out of them on friday night... the Guardsmen ended up in the hospital... so I'm always a little edgy going out myself in the woods. I try not to talk, and when I say high the walkers or joggers either nod my head or say "hallow" which is how they say hello.

The only issue I've found is most of the trails don't seem to lead anywhere, or loop around... you ride them to the dead ends, or to another rode/logging road type thing and jump on another trail... but then you get lost really easy.

When we were flying down the "Berg" We actually missed our origonal path and ended up in another "parking lot" type thing further down the road.

I think once I learn the trail system a bit better it will help a lot.

On the way back there's a nice flowy downhill section, My friend missed the curve in the trail or something (it was really hard to see by this time.... I need to invest in a light.... it's illegal to not have reflectors and lights anyway off-base) and he clipped a tree with his right pedal and it shattered... he layed the bike over on it's side and just slide a few feet down. Left his toe in a good bit of pain and a little shaken up, but he was able to ride home.

Im excited for tomorrow...

The Kona Dawg... rides amazing.... and for a dual suspension it climbs extreamly well.
I actually hit some hills thinking I wasn't going to make it... but that Kona climbs like a horse.

Im very happy with it so far, besides the chain issue I had to fix with my rubber and zip-tie bandage and the Hayes Soles are a tad disapointing for Hydros.

Took the fiancée up to Thomson today and she loved it. I think I got her hooked:thumb:, and I think I may enjoy this a little more than road biking..... The trail was in great condition, it wasn't too hot, humidity was a little high, but meh. Overall a great way to spend the evening. Oh, and Moe's for dinner!!

-_RebelRidin'_- 08-09-09 11:55 PM

^ lol It's Georgia... humidity sucks!
You know.... I NEVER ate at Moes for the three years I was there lol.

If you like Mexican food, hit up El Bronco, it's an awesome restaurant. It's off of Watson, in the K-mart P-lot.

Good to hear Thomson is still good and strong. I loved that trail.

Yes the humidity is a biotch. Never went to Moe's?!?! How did you live??

I've been to El Bronco a few times and it's pretty good, but I've been favoring Casa Mexico in Byron now. Our usual knows our drinks and orders as soon as we come in.

Yeah, Thomson is an awesome trail, maybe a little much for my fiancee to be learning how to MTB on, but she'd progressing quickly ad absolutely loves it :thumb:.

If/when you get be to Warner Vegas we should definitely hit up Thomson some day.

Dion Rides 08-10-09 09:20 AM

I went down to Santa Cruz and climbed Wilder Ranch up Long Meadow Trail. Made the mistake of deflating my tires for "more traction" when I nearly had a cardiac halfway up. Realized that my tires were WAY too low and was adding resistance to my climb. I pulled over, aired my tires again and BOOYAAHH! Rocked the single-speed up the mountain. I'm never letting air out again, especially for fire roads.

I met up with my my brother at the top for the descend down via single tracks - who was putting in a ride while my nephew was at a birthday party. We traded bikes and I rode his Rock Lobster Cyclocross bike for, like, 10 feet. He took off and I was on the skinny-tire sketch bike, nearly killing myself on every tree root. I yelled, "Dude, come and take your bike back! How the hell do you ride this thing?!" and he was about 50 yards ahead, yelling, "Dude!!! This thing is a Monster Truck!" - all, of course, while hauling ass (he's bee riding those trails for nearly 20 years).

We had less that an hour to get down the mountain + a ride into town to pick up my nephew. When we arrived, I went to put a little air in my tires for the pavement ride home and I must've wrenched the valve stem, because I sprung a leak! Luckily my brother had his truck - we loaded both bikes and he drove me back to my parents house where my truck was parked.

It all worked out because the remainder of the day was spent with my family + BBQ. What a great day!

Next week we're doing teh Tour of Napa on the road bikes.

It's fun. If I had to only pick one to keep though, it'd be the steel hardtail - the Peyto. Throw a U-turn Lyrik on there and have an assortment of various tires for different days and it rocks on everything. Would probably do a fresh paint job and have some ISCG tabs put on so it oculd run a Hammerschmidt.

Thankfully, I am not forced into that sort of extreme measure. :) Getting ready to go out for a short afternoon ride on the PeytoSS in a bit, soon as wifey is ready to go!

Hmmm...you think this is possible to do on an Alu frame and still have it durable enough to handle the torque and line up properly?

depends on the alu. some would be fine, some would need to be re-heat treated after. you'd need to find out for sure the alloy used of your frame, and find a builder/repair place willing to do the job. not as many custom alu frame jobbers out there, and they don't tend to be cheap.

you'd maybe be able to find the frame bits and then have your local machine shop do it if they are experienced with alu, and if they are capable of heat treating thngs post-weld if needed. with the careful facing and alignment needed, it's not a job for just any schmoe that can weld.

IMO, for the cost of doing to to an alu frame, you'd be better off just to put it towards a nice burly steel frame.

Yea I definately miss not having thomson in my back yard anymore.

I'd like to get back to War-town, as all my friends are there... but it looks like for the next year I'm Stuck in Germany.

so today I crashed just like 30 minutes ago on a regular trail ride I was taking a turn too fast and there was sand for about 5 feet and my front tire got stuck and I flopped over the bars into a rock garden banged up my knees and broke my water pack.
but any of you guys wear knee pads and elbow pads on normal trail rides?

I don't, for the most part. Riding urban with the big plats I wear shinpads to save them from the cleats, but that's all.

-_RebelRidin'_- 08-12-09 01:58 AM

I've been on some good rides lately.

I went out and rode up a mountain to a Castle.
Rested and checked out the remains of the Castle that was built in 1200. Was attacked by "red beard" or King Ludwig, and was destroyed by the French....

Went on another ride last night with some guys from the Bike club. We met at another castle and rode the surrounding trail system and just kept going farther and farther out.
The one guy I was told was a professional racer.... very fast lol.
They had Gary Fisher Carbon 29'ers... I was on my Kona Dawg, the hills killed me, but for the most part I was able to match their pace (which was not their fastest... it was their easy day lol)
we probabley did 10 or so miles.... We found an injured Eagle and we felt obligated to find help for it. The guy and I rode over 5 KM's and went on a wild goose chase to find the Forrest rangers house, only to find out he doesn't deal with wild birds lol....

Thats hard to do, as people don't speak english very well.

I didn't bring my camera on the second ride.. I have over 90 pictures from the frist ride... I'm going to sift through and post the good ones.
