Rode the Hole In The Ground trail, in Truckee, CA today. I broke my leg on this trail two years ago this month. On the one year anniversary of the break, I rode the trail on the same bike again. This year I decided to do it on my new rigid SS.
It was ... hard. The first climb is six miles and I was dying. I told one of the other guys we were riding with that I might be in over my head, but I was determined to continue. And I did. After the first climb, the trail descends quite a bit, then sort of rolls up and down, finishing with a great descent and a small climb back to where the cars are parked. The trail head. Getting here from the end of the trail requires a four mile climb: http://www.cleanspokes.com/Hole in t...9/DSC00244.JPG This climb goes to the top of Andesite Peak, which is about 8100 ft: http://www.cleanspokes.com/Hole in t...9/DSC00252.JPG There's Castle Peak: http://www.cleanspokes.com/Hole in t...9/DSC00261.JPG Here's me in a little rocky section: http://www.cleanspokes.com/Hole in t...9/DSC00272.JPG There's multiple places along the trail where you can break off and ride some big granite: http://www.cleanspokes.com/Hole in t...9/DSC00280.JPG http://www.cleanspokes.com/Hole in t...9/DSC00286.JPG http://www.cleanspokes.com/Hole in t...9/DSC00289.JPG http://www.cleanspokes.com/Hole in t...9/DSC00300.JPG This section of the trail is awesome: http://www.cleanspokes.com/Hole in t...9/DSC00307.JPG My bike at the end of the ride: http://www.cleanspokes.com/Hole in t...9/DSC00317.JPG |
First Race of the Year for Me
Well between family stuff and a new dog I missed the first two local races this season but yesterday I finally got out to one. I've been trying to pick up the pace with my riding and my goal was to run about the middle of the pack in the SS category. I went into the woods in 6th place, I passed one guy, I got passed by one guy, and finally came out of the woods in 6th place. There were 5 in front of me and 5 behind me... doesn't get much more middle of the pack than that... :D (mission accomplished). Next race for me is August 16th... not sure what class I'll be running just yet but we'll see what happens.
Great race though. I ran very consistent lap times and averaged 10.5 mph. Not blazing but not a bad pace to keep for an hour and a half I guess. Hope to have it around 11-11.5 for the next race. Good luck to all you other guys out there racing this season. |
Starting to get some real nice pics in here lately! Nachomc, good job on tackling a trail you broke your leg on before. On a rigid to boot. Bravo.

Got a nice little ride in this evening with Hambone and the Girlscout. Good to be out riding. It seems we always take pics on the same section of trail becuse it's at the end.

Alpine trail, Oakridge, Oregon. Shuttled then 3 miles of climbing to about 4800 ft, then 12 miles of downhill to about 1000ft.. all singletrack. Too much action to get alot of action shots.. nice views though.

Very nice. Long time, no see.

Very nice pictures Y'all.
I caught wind of a rather rough trail close by, and a few trails that wrap around an old castle... I'll be sure to take pictures of em when I get out. |
Just got back from a good 45 min run around in a local neighborhood park/mini reserve(Barry Park in Syracuse, NY) None of the trails are very long but there's some good semi-technical super tight single track that is fun to bomb around in. Just wishing I picked up a pair of gloves I was looking at at the lbs this morning because my middle knuckled decided to start a fight with the end of a stick. Oh well, you aren't having fun unless you bleed a little, right? I'll try to remember to bring my little camera with me next time to snap some pictures.

Played around in Trumbull today. Lovely place to ride. Wifey ran. The humidity sucked. Some pork tacos and chicken tamale afterwards helped. Saw this guy a couple days ago. Looked to be about five feet or so. I think an eastern ratsnake, but not 100% sure. http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f1.../IMG_0017a.jpg |
Rode French gulch on Monday and that was way more climbing than either of us bargained for . On Tuesday I rented a Blur LT and Matt had a 575 and decided to do Peak 8 for some lift access fun. Both bikes handled Pioneer trail and Dwight's/Game Train really well. Really glad I wasn't on a hardtail for that.
Back in ICT now for the next two days then back to Lawrence and the beloved LRT. |
Took my nephew on his first ride today. He did about 6 miles and got to ride a fun trail.Girlscout took off and got a big ride in then caught back up to us later.

Nice pics 66. Looks like the little guy enjoyed it, got a future rider on your hands?

Just a report which I posted on another forum about my ride with a mate yesterday. Considering the forum I originally posted it on is relatively local, I'm able to describe specific sections of trail, which you guys on here may not understand. I've tried to change it around a bit to make it more understandable, but you get the gist :P
Weather wasn't looking great on the drive up to Lysterfield, with rain coming down the whole way, but it cleared up once I arrived at Hallam North Road car park. About 5 minutes later, Anthony (a.k.a Ducky) rocked up, so after a quick chat, off we went. I lead the way and did a lap of the 2006 Commonwealth Games MTB course to start off with. Ducky and I both got so VERY very close to nailing that bastard of a right-hander coming into the rock garden. Both of us looked and felt strong into and through the corner, until we both lost traction just at the last second. Bummer. Continued on, and approached Switchback (a big climb). In my mind, I was psyching myself up, and it worked! For the first time in the history of forever, I actually managed to keep up with Duckface all the way up the climb! I banned myself from touching my left-hand shifter, so I kept it in the middle ring the whole way up. Worked pretty well. I was very much impressed with my efforts, and for some reason the climb didn't feel as hard as it usually does. Anyway, continued down through the nice, flowing downhill section, around the berms, over the boardwalks. Coming up through that rocky section where you have to take 2 uphill-ish hairpins, my right calf decided to cramp up. With a yell of a swear word or two, I managed to awkwardly dismount my bike with a locked-up right leg, and try to walk it out, before quackhead administered some of his cramp-removing expertise. Worked pretty well too. Back on the bike after a few minutes, but had to stop shortly after due to a bit of a squishy rear tyre...I reckon I have a bit of a slow leak somewhere. Back to HNR car park, we stopped for a bit of a break and a chat, before heading down Hug and the Blair Witch trails. There's a new log-over going over the big fallen tree on Blair Witch. As we passed, Ducky says "That's a new log-over!" A bit down the track, there was a tree down which required us to duck (lolpun) to ride under it. "That's a new log-under!" I said. Across the dam wall, and into Trailmix (A bike shop and cafe in one, located near the main car park/picnic area) for what felt like a bit of a premature snack and coffee break. Had a good chat with Mr. Duck about his week in Adelaide, before the guys at Trailmix began to pack up, so we headed off again. Basically returned the way we came, up Blair Witch and on to Hug. Stopped at that section of Blair Witch where you have the option of going a few different ways, for a bit of a photo/video shoot. Kept heading back after a bit of a play. As we went through the corner where I toppled over last ride, I heard Ducky, a.k.a smartass, exclaim "Remember to have some speed through it this time!" Bastard. Got back up to HNR, parted ways and headed off home for a nice warm shower. Trails were in pretty good nick considering the rain we've had, but that would have been a completely different story had we decided to ride Buckle. Buckle generally gets a bit yucky after rain.. Now, videos. http://s172.photobucket.com/albums/w...t=MVI_6649.flv http://s172.photobucket.com/albums/w...t=MVI_6650.flv http://s172.photobucket.com/albums/w...t=MVI_6651.flv http://s172.photobucket.com/albums/w...t=MVI_6652.flv |
Hm, it's funny how things always FEEL much faster than they look on video
Here's a taste of Lysterfield Park for you guys overseas... http://www.ihasaids.com/upload/data/1249195581.jpg http://www.ihasaids.com/upload/data/1249219120.jpg http://www.ihasaids.com/upload/data/1249235555.jpg http://www.ihasaids.com/upload/data/1249240605.jpg (That one looks like it's going to end badly, but I landed it safely) http://www.ihasaids.com/upload/data/1249258248.jpg And a 10 minute video. I attended a group ride with a few people from the aforementioned forum a few months ago, and one of the guys has a helmet-cam, so he recorded this. It's a good video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=AU&h...&v=PvEIqguvJ8I |
Got a good ride in on Black Mtn in Pisgah. Ony one pic of the Girlscout........

Rode with the Hambone today. Wet roots and mud. I put on my Nokian's that I picked up in the spring. They hooked up well. I am trying to push it a little so I wound up losing the front end in a curve and stacking it up. No worries, it was pretty tame.
|
Wet, yesterday morning, slid off a bridge and burped a tire. Good times! Today was dry so traction was better.
|
Awesome, nachomc. Loks like some great riding.
Another great day here in NC, another great ride in NC. |
Had a good ride at Thomson today. It was ridiculously muggy and quite warm, but when is it not in Georgia this time of year. Just counting down the days till I get my new bike (my old Cdale was about to kill me, on account of the 15 year old fork), Saturday can't get here fast enough.

Roughly doubled my normal Trumbull ride mileage today. Time to put myself into a food coma now. Good stuff! Found more new (to me stuff) and some alternate lines that don't get much traffic. Did my best to clear some stuff out. A couple really nice bits, one little section that had the trail aesthetic side of me giggling it was so damn good.
