If those are your choices, you should finance a better bike. That or make a deal with the shop to swap in the BB7s.

The whole beauty of the BB7 are the dials on each pad that allow for easy adjustment. BB5s don't have those. Neither do the Hayes.

Of course, if you HAD to choose between the BB5 and MX-2, you would take the BB5 in a heartbeat.

The Sole is a single piston design, it's practically a mechanical brake with fluid. Very basic hydraulic brake.

I see my work is done here

Combine properly setup BB7's with a cable system like Dry Cables and you can't go wrong

Hey I have one of those Rockys. =P
The frame's for sale if anyone's in my area.

Oh... topic. I'm reading along, because I'm going to need at least on disc brake if I want to survive the season.

Great thread everyone,

I've been asking the same question about mechs or hydro and which mechs are the best, I'm leaning toward the mech do to the money difference. And as a self proclaimed weekend warrior and one local race a year on my Trek Fuel 90 do I really need the hydro.

Next question where is the best place to order the bb7?

Hayes Sole are probably the worst hydraulic disc brake out there. There purpose is to decorate deceptively priced bikes that claim to have hydraulic brakes. Unfortunately, the Sole brakes only have one piston so they push the rotor like a mechanical rather than sandwhiching it.

For mechs, the new IRD Dual Bangers are getting rave reviews. They sandwich the rotor as opposed to pushing it sideways just like most hydros. It does not have to pistons. Instead it's a single piston and a "sliding" caliper.

For hydros, near the top of any list should be both the Juicy 7 as well as the Hayes El Camino. Hope is for weight weenies.

Dual Bangers kills your pad, it wears out easily so if you are planning to use it for long rides, better keep spare pads in ur bags.

Um,Flak, read it again. He clearly means that having both pads contact the rotor makes them wear out fast. Better to only have one pad touch the rotor. Which makes as much sense as a one-armed fisherman.

How often do you replace pads on your IRD dual bangers?

i dont own the dual bangers but i got a friend who owns them, he says that since both pads are touching the rotor, the braking power increases but if you keep braking or slowing your bike down it will wear out real fast (comparing with single pad breaking)

Ok im confused.

What the hell are you talking about?! Single pad braking? Even single piston hydros and mechs use 2 pads to slow you down. One pushes the rotor into the other...but they both create friction.

OK, lets think about this for a second. A traditional mechanical caliper works by pushing the disc with one pad (attached to a piston) against a fixed pad. Both pads come in contact with the disc.

If your friend is experiencing poor brake wear, it is likely due to the pad material. You can get organic resin pads or metallic pads that last a long time. ALL disc brakes come into contact with both pads. The difference is whether the disc is deformed during braking or if the disc stays in place and are sandwhiched.

Just don't listen to anything wheelhot says and you should be fine.
