Thanks! Ooops, I saw pics of bikes and threw mine in the MTB thread. It's a 5500 in the TREK/VW MTB paint scheme (originally done for the MTB'ers road bikes).

Sorry for posting this here I just need it up so I could ask a question. This is the only place I know where to attach an image.

With that said... what is it called? That piece that covers the gear like that. Does it just screw on there or would I have to buy a separate crank arm and everything for that? I think it would come in handy for those close calls when you don't quite make it up that rock or tree as smoothly as possible... you know that ::Scraaaap:: sound!

If you want that exact one click here: RF Bash Ring ON SALE!

They are used for what their name implies. To Bash into things like rocks or trees or.....?

Installation is relatively easy. You must remove your big chainring, and bolt this on in its place. That is assuming your cranks have removable chainrings (cheaper cranks DO NOT).

The only drawback is if you use your Big Ring a lot! You have to sacrifice the Big Ring in order for the added protection of the Bash Ring.

There are also several different brands available. My favorite is the Evil. It's a clear lexan Bash Ring supposibly as strong (if not stronger) than aluminum. Can't remember the link, but do a google.
