Can you take a closeup of the stem? That looks like hella stack with the Girvin and a pretty freakin' long stem. (given the vintage...it fits well)

That's going to be one peacefully quiet HT.

But remember, his grips are back more than a regular bar - thus the longer stem, to get the grips in the same reach spot.

I had a Haro e-stay bike years ago. Super quiet.

VERY interesting, how does it ride?

I've only ridden it on tame gravel paths, no singletrack. Even with the long-ish stem it responds immediately to steering inputs. The fork spring is a bit soft for my weight, may need to adjust pre-load or swap out for a different spring weight.

The fork set up requires a certain distance between the fork race and upper clamp thus requiring the tall stack height. On top of that the frame head tube is pretty short. Even with the stack height of the stem I still put a couple spacers to achieve the required spacing.

Yes, it's pretty quiet on rough trails. Chain slap is non-existent.

Correct, I had this particular stem on another bike with alt-bars that had a significant amount of back sweep. The stem is a 120mm and even then I probably could go with a 135mm stem to make the ETT on the bike the normal measurement I use.

Current Single Speed configuration. The winter/commuter beater. The frame is a little small for me, but it works. As soon as I get a new set of disc hubs, the components will be swapped over to a carbon frame for a much nicer single speed!!

Chain a bit too long & tensioner in a wonky position?

mrgrunt99 10-29-11 06:48 PM

commo_soulja...that was just the initial setup. The chain is now shorter and the tensioner is in a better position...thanks.

My first higher quality mountain bike. I've been riding a 20 year old steel Raleigh hybrid for years so this is one heck of an upgrade.

Oh they are long gone. Took this picture right after I got it home so I was to excited to even think of removing them at that time.

Ohhh snap! I am so jealous. I would not ride that bike nearly to its potential, but I want it anyway.

I've tried a killswitch, wasn't my cup of tea on a pumptrack, but was good jumping.

I am tired of having so many different bikes for different uses. So this is going to be my do everything monster! It will be built up with SLX/XT components, a 150mm Rock Shox Sektor, and a couple different wheelsets (one for freeride/AM/thrashing, and one for regular/commuting/winter). What's left of the other 3 bikes will be combined into a backup/loaner...just have to decide which frame. After that I will have some spare parts, and 2 frames to sell (either 2 FS frames, or 1 FS and one hardtail)

I will post pics of the buildup soon!!

Sixty Fiver 11-08-11 11:17 PM

It can't always be fun and games... although I did jump a few curbs on the way home.

Put some new boots on the Moulden too... these knocked off a few grams.

I just ordered a bunch of lightweight rubber myself (IRC Mythos in 1.95 and 2.1), some will go on this bike, I think. Picked her up for $5 the other day. She's practically rideable. Just needs new grips and possibly new rear brake, one arm has a broken plastic bit - it brakes, but not quite properly. Maiden voyage this evening makes me think I might like her more than the Trek 4000 so I might sell off the Trek.
