Probably would have been the better course.. We did not report the incident because.
..... Ever canoed the wilderness. We could not tell them where we were, since we did not know..Just some where on the Manistee River... . There are thousands of bends to report..
Guess, we had a decent description of them, but it was two days later before we reached a phone. This was well before the time cell phones were so popular. And besides in camp that night we had had enough beers to sort of forget the whole thing..

Michigan

I live in Michigan it is rare to find someone without a gun in the woods. I am used to it and see it all the time as I am out in the woods often. There is pretty much year round hunting of some sort and these yahoos take it pretty seriously.

I didn't read all replies so someone might have said this already but beside wearing orange, DON'T WEAR WHITE in hunting areas/seasons. White is the color of whitetail deers' tails (duh), rabbit tails, and belly fur of many taller stance game. Folks have been shot and killed because of this.

Hmmmm . . . labeling avid hunters as 'yahoos.' Gee, kinda like labeling people who get all serious about bicycles as fruitcups, no?

These yahoos you're talking about, are they they yahoos around here who take biking in the woods seriously or are they the guys hunting? Because other than choice of activity, there really is little difference between the two. I'd bet more hikers are run down by fast moving bikers than bikers are shot by hunters in any given year.

Yahoos

I think that someone who points a gun at you while you are in a canoe is a yahoo. I was responding to the guy who was in Michigan in a canoe. BTW I have never once seen a mountain bike in the woods in Michigan.

How'd the hell they drive down the singletrack in a truck? They call 'em rednecks in Puerto Rico, too, eh?

This is a RACIST post. Here, let me change it for you and see what people say....

Yup. I was strolling down a street in the inner city far from police station and I see an impala and two guys with handguns doing some sort of rap, you know, like on MTV. They were the ghetto rapper types. I looked at them, they looked at me, I kept riding along, nothing happened, but this certainly opens my eyes to possible dangers in the inner city. I was riding alone BTW, which adds to the risk.

blah blah blah this thread died a long time ago. if you find people with guns don't let them shoot you. however if they do, be a man (or woman) and walk it off.

If you heard that tune from "Deliverance" in the background I beleive I'd avoid that trail. I all seriousness, you are probably safer around hunters than you are around the average yahoo MBer.

I know this is an old thread being new here and first post just had to put my 2 cents worth in you should also remember hunters have been on earth as long as humans bikes not so long. LOL Yes I'm a hunter but bow hunter you are not a redneck if you carry a gun you are a FREE AMERICAN.

I've been on the other end, me and some friends were carrying guns, and came across a dirt biker. (The dirt biker was actually on our property). Where we shoot, there is a really big hill right there, so it is safe. We talked to the biker, and he was a nice guy. We told him it would take about 10 minutes for us to get setup, so he did a few more laps, and talked to us before he left I really don't mind if he is on our property, so we kicked him out that day, but told him he is welcome back anytime. Only after he left did we unpack the guns and start shooting. So I don't really think too much of a person with a gun, but I would want to know exactly where they are shooting, and where their backstop is. The problem you have is when a person doesn't have a suitable backstop and doesn't know where their bullets are going. This isn't a problem for a responsible shooter, but everybody may not be responsible.

You are a very kind person to have cut the guy some slack riding on your property.

Just last fall my friend, Susan, and I came across a deer hunter. We had a nice long chat. He was a nice guy.

I did not then, nor do I now, feel the need to carry a firearm when MTBing.

He's a FREE CANADIAN.

There's an old redneck that always sits on his 4 wheeler with his rifle on the front rack and glares at all the roadies that pass on a popular route here. I think it's funny. I always say "Hey" to him just to see if he will ever say "Hi" back. Hasn't happened so far.
There are alot of bitter people in the world, but most of them arent murderous psychopaths. They are just posturing.
