So um, I called Bay Ridge this afternoon to check if they had something in stock, which they did. Ten minutes later, just when I was pulling up, the store was on fire! Luckily it was a small electrical fire and they put it out themselves with a fire extinguisher, but four FDNY trucks got there quick and made sure everything was kosher.

Whew.

So I'm not sure if they'll be open the rest of the day.

Wow! Two weeks ago, the repair shop at Roy's Sheepshead Cycles burned down. I hope the saying "Trouble comes in threes" proves false.

Matthew Modine will be doing a 20-mile bike ride through Brooklyn and the Lower East Side, stopping at a number of local bike shops to spread awareness about his September 20th event - Bicycle for a Day (BFAD.) Matthew wants to invite bicycle and environmental enthusiasts, and anyone who wants to join, to go along for the ride with him to help spread the word. The ride will culminate in an art show at Phebes at 7:30 PM. Mr. Modine wants to personally buy a beer (or non-alcoholic beverage of your choice) for anyone who completes the entire ride with him. Bay Ridge Bicycle World is fine, it was just a small electrical fire, there fixing the problems right now as we speak..

jyossarian 07-15-08 08:13 PM

Jeez, I was just there on Saturday. They need a chair or something for people trying on shoes.

Did anybody else see the Stealth bomber over the GW this evening?

Air 07-15-08 10:17 PM

Whoa - no but that's pretty cool. Or scary.

I actually saw it on TV during the opening ceremonies for the All Star game.
I had to rewind it to be sure I wasn't seeing things.
Our govenrment spares no expense to hype our national pasttime.

Cool - so let's all meet up there. We'll meet at Waterside Plaza anywhere between 7 and 9, on the non water side part of the plaza (to the left if you're looking at the band). To get there go on the east side bike path and it's around 25th (look for those large brick towers north of all the mini cruise ships and the gas station). There's a few walkways that will take you up to the main 'stage'. After it ends around 9 we'll go for a friendly ride.

If anyone wants my number just PM me.

Bump - see some of you there tonight!

noteon 07-16-08 12:04 PM

My wife got last-minute freelance work this evening, so I have to take care of my kids. Can't do it--see you next time.

I don't watch sports, so I didn't know the Stealth was coming. We had just stopped at Haven & 177th so one of my boys could play percussion on the lamppost, and this wicked black triangle goes slowly over the Hudson, past the GW over the Bronx, and pretty much disappears when it levels out.

jyossarian 07-16-08 07:13 PM

Ah, that's where I messed up. I didn't take the walkway over the FDR. In fact, I heard nothing nor saw anything that indicated a band was playing nearby. So I went to Dance Out! instead in East River Park.

The place where I got doored was on the final stretch toward home, where I would have been even if I were on the "safe route." A guy opened his door on the passenger side while stopped in traffic. Since when does anybody get doored from the street side?

Anyway, 2nd Ave. between the Queensboro bridge and 34th was the real challenge on that particular commute. They've got a lot of nerve including that stretch on the official NYC bike map.

Yeah, the bike map ain't perfect. Gotta take it with a grain of salt.

I actually had the same doored experience - was rolling up to a red light on a narrow street in Brooklyn and a woman in the passenger seat of an SUV opened up about four cars back from the light. I had my lock on that side of my waist - I got a nasty black and blue but I kept on rolling (stopped long enough to tell her to be more careful). The driver looked pissed - his door looked worse than my hip!:D

In some places, with an entire salt lick.

I wish. My handlebars just weren't narrow enough to make it through (and that's after chopping them down), so I got clipped on the left and went down.

Ended up getting the complete bells-and-whistles fire station/ambulance response. I must have used some keyword or other when I called 911. It ended with this big burly fireman saying "So you want me to write 'fall down go boom' in my report?" and me saying "Yeah, wouldja?"

But you did have a phone ;)

I passed a large group of people in East River Park (ran down to South Street Seaport before coming back up to the group) - probably blew past you ;)

Got to meet Urbanis (again) - he missed the concert but man I love that group! Got in some dances - one of the security guards came up and was so ecstatic that a 'big guy' like me could move so fast. Haven't gotten a chance to dance that hard in a while.

Urbanis and I did a gentle lower Manhattan loop - what a gorgeous night to be out and about!

Boilermakers play in a few weeks - they are an INCREDIBLE swing band. High, high energy - can't wait!

Catnap 07-17-08 06:38 AM

so i was on my way to the east side show, when i ran into friends heading over to see Steel Pulse play at Rockefeller Park - sorry guys, but going to a massive reggae show with a bunch of cute Trinidadian girls just seemed like a better idea. i'll try again next week...

Doh - heck yeah!

jyossarian 07-17-08 09:26 AM

Damn, I didn't know about the reggae show. Too many things going on last night.

Ouch! Sorry to hear that - and glad it wasn't worse. I realize I got off quite easy on mine.

Just my luck - why don't I hear about Steel Pulse in the park? I was watching some blue grass in Madison Sq. Park

Air 07-17-08 10:08 AM

Damn - four free outdoor concerts at once. Pretty impressive.

Actually, while on my way over to the Steel Pulse show, I stopped and listed to another concert in Battery Park. It was a three-woman vocalist group singing traditional jewish songs. I caught their last one, "Hatikva" before moving on.

so i guess you can make that 5. for lovers of old school hiphop, tomorrow night's free show in Central Park will be awesome: http://www.summerstage.org/index1.aspx?BD=20561

It was earlier - not sure exactly when. They've been setting stuff up there a lot the last few weeks. I like that little park (I work right down the street), even though it has a rather creepy history

When the Draft Riots hit New York in 1863, ten thousand Federal troops brought in to control the rioters were bivuoacked in Madison and Washington squares.
And now it has a Shake Shack.

pgoat 07-18-08 07:07 AM

ahh...progress. That shack always has a humongous line, too....

At least they moved all the dead bodies. (shudder:twitchy:)

noteon 07-22-08 09:13 AM

So how's it looking for another night ride?
