I re-did part of yesterdays route, only 36 miles of it, on my own mostly because we blew by this sign at high speed yesterday and I wasn't going to drag the whole group to a stop......
On Colonial Springs Rd. Incorrigible history nerds like me find this stuff fascinating.
Not, however, the most obscure historical marker I've rolled up to. Somewhere in central NY near Geneva IIRC is a marker for the site of, not the first, but the second, recorded death by bee sting among the European settlers in the New World.
Wonderful afternoon to get out!

Well here's another odd one. It's on Scranton Ave. in Lynbrook, just east of Union. I saw this one day last summer while on my bike commute. The state seemingly had just erected it.
And for those of us who ride up Stewart Ave., just north of Hempstead Tpk., there's a historical marker about the Motor Parkway just north of the spot where the Motor Parkway crosses Stewart. The marker is in the trees on the east side of the road.
But my favorite is on Mannetto Hill Rd., the one between Washington and Round Swamp. The marker states it's the boundary between New England and New Holland, or some such, also known as the Nassau/Suffolk border.
This is as BTW, why cycling is so cool. You get to find and see stuff you would never see in a car.

Crepes Suzette! Who knew? I know the one you refer to, marking the former international border between New England and New Netherlands. It's cool, the sweep of history.
IIRC the NYS program to erect these ended in 1966 and I believe they are no longer maintained by NYS either. New ones, again IIRC, can be ordered by private individuals or organizations to the original spec, but must be paid for privately. It looks like the celebrity chef marker was funded, like the one on Colonial, by a Pomeroy foundation.
Memories jogged, I looked online for the "bee sting" one, but there is no comprehensive data base listing all of these markers. There are (often incomplete) county by county databases. The "bee sting" marker, I remember, was close to the one in Yates Co. south of Branchport marking the site of the childhood home of Red Jacket, the Seneca Indian leader.
Lots of Revolutionary/Native American sites in the Finger Lakes area where I have ridden a lot, and I can now (partially) blame you for reviving a hankering to ride those green hills again. This marker was in Geneva NY; a large Seneca burial mound. God knows how many people are under my bike there. There was another burial/village site that stuck in my mind, on the shore of Cayuga Lake somewhere near Aurora. It was a beautiful yet such a lonely and almost haunted-seeming place it gave me chills and I didn't even take a picture.

I passed by that sign about three years ago.
Edit -- Oh, wait a minute! That sign is on Woodbury Road. So it's not the same one that you are talking about.

???Down Bagatelle/Conklin, to eastbound Nicholls Rd, dogleg right onto Long Island Ave, and on east. I THINK I've been out that way, in the distant past. I don't remember how far east I got. Things might get sketchy past Edgewood? At that point I'd probably head south and hug the coast. Might be worth an exploratory expedition. One can get tired of Round Swamp

Went out of Bethpage on a "B" ride to East Island. On the way back one of the riders blew out a tire. It tore right at the bead so I broke off the group and rode to Brickwell Syosset and purchased a new tire for him. Well.. the tire was really, really , really tight and we barely got it on, but we must of put a hole in the tube so we were done. I then headed back to Bethpage and drove back to give him a lift.
51 miles @ 15.4mph, 1690' and 1693c
It was a long morning but I was glad to help.

Ya done another good deed.
I thought you were coming with us on the AA. I've been working past couple of nights so was running on maybe 7 hours total sleep since Thursday morning. Plus I hate this heavy air. So we cheated on the ride, opting to pass on the dead end out-n-back to Centre Island, and stop at the beach for a cooldown, rejoining the group on the return leg. Then the ride leader decided to throw in a loop on Horseshoe Rd, just because, and 4 of us continued on the route home figuring the rest of them would be a few minutes behind but would reel us in. Well, they didn't, until we were less than a mile from home. Ended up with 39, which is plenty when it's this icky.

Thinking of going to Heckscher State Park this weekend. Just wondering - what's the safest way to get from Heckscher to Connetquot Park?

There's a bike path that runs along the south side of Connetquot. It ends on the west side at Connetquot Ave.
Take the path then head south on Connetquot Ave., it becomes Great River Road south of Montauk Hwy., continue south and the west as it heads towards Hecksher, now as Timber Point Road. Keep going west on that.
After you pass under the Hecksher Parkway, watch for a paved path that heads south, its right along the fence of the park border on the west side.
Head left/south on the path, it heads into Hecksher.

You said it, man. After 2 consecutive 170 mile weeks, this week I could barely be motivated to crack 50. This morning we heard the radio advise us of 100% humidity and just went back to bed. We ended up rolling out from home maybe 930, when it had dropped about 99%, and had enough after 25 miles. It probably would be better to wait for the heat of afternoon which knocks down the relative humidity and at least allows the sweat to evaporate and accomplish something.

I too waited for roads to dry, rolled at 9:30 for 40, it wasn't bad, a bit humid but it was cloudy enough to not get too hot. Home after 12 which is later then I like to ride in summer.

"B" ride out of Mineola to Locust Valley.. 31 miles of easy riding.

Also did 31, straight from working all night, which basically su**s. First 18 were on a relentlessly hilly and non-tandem optimal route ("Peckham's Loop" in part) to Gold Star Battalion Beach on Huntington Bay. At that point I surrendered to my exhaustion and a few of us cruised home on a flatter shortcut, as the rest of the AA group had more hills in mind. If I had more sense I'd not been out at all, as I'm back at work now, feeling not too bad but have 7 hours to go. Where's the coffee.......
Busted a rear spoke yesterday, and a front today, after going a few years and probably 15,000 miles since the last "twang". Fixed 'em both.

I need to get my head examined.
So I headed out early to beat the heat and planned on doing Tobay to Cold Spring Harbor. At Cold Spring, i decided to go up Snake Hill and on to Caumsett... big mistake. On the way hole the heat got to me and so did the climbing. About 10 miles from home I had to take a break and lay down. i found a lawn sprinkler and went under it. I must of stopped every few miles but I did make it home.

I did 32 yesterday afternoon, hottest part of the day, and found it less oppressive than the cooler yet more humid morning. "It's not the heat, it's the HUMIDITY!" goes the cliche. Then proceeded to work 17 hrs straight overnight so today I was hors d combat. Today was worse anyway.
One time I rode out to Stony Brook on a HOT day, and decided to bushwhack unknown (to me) roads through the Commack area. I ran out of water in a residential area and filled my bottles from a sprinkler. I survived too.
I might join one of the Borella Field groups tomorrow.

Just a thought that in this heat and round these parts, the air quality is terrible.
I back off and don't do afternoon commutes home from Brooklyn for that reason.

The EPA has an air quality website, www.airnow.gov, which displays pollution maps. It's sad to see the extent of ozone pollution in the northeast.
Once when my wife & I were climbing Mt. Washington in NH, there were a couple of college students at the trailhead with a portable pulmonary function testing instrument, grabbing hikers and doing quick tests, repeating them upon the hikers return. They were trying to determine if the ozone exposure would have an immediate effect.

Congratulations, there cant be a better way to spend a day.I sure wish I had stock in the company that makes those newborn baby wraps.Every newborn I ever seen seems to be all snuggled up in that wrap.
