Yeah, Wednesday afternoon, 4:50, myself and the rest of the prospective 2006 Wentworth road team will be going out for 20-25 miles. The season doesn't start til the spring, but this is basically seeing how many new freshman we can get involved, and so far we've had a great turnout, better than expected.

jeff, i don't know how advisable it would be to ride this one fixed, as some parts get quite hilly, including one hill that hurts when you climb it 39x26t, it's summit ave in brookline, about a 1/2 mile of i'd estimate a 10-11% grade? maybe more, but i'm not sure, i couldnt find a topo on it.

-edit- Summit ave is approx 180 vertical feet of climbing, over 2,100 ft travel. that calculates out to an average of a 8.7% grade for about a 1/2 mile. most of the climb is however an 11% gradient, from 200ft to 1400ft horizontal.

also included in tomorow's ride will be heartbreak hill, on the return into town (centre st to hammond st on comm ave in newton)

Saturday Morning leave from Boston by car (I can accomodate 4 bikes and 4 people in my vehicle, myself included) and drive threeish hours north to Lincoln, NH and ride an 80 mile loop East across the Kangamangus Hwy to North Conway, North up RT16 and West across RT302 returning through Franconia Notch and back to the car. Weather permitting this is a great (scenic as f***) ride and a challenge, we will be riding geared and should expect to complete it in 6 hrs or so, maybe faster? Who's down? Descents in excess of >>>>>50 MPH>>>>>>>>>>... whoosh fun!

Saturdays route: this is not a perfect trace of the actual roads to save your browsers from freezing.

Early start from Boston. 6:45AM from a mutually agreed location ... suggestions? The weather will be mint! BTW this is actually a 98 mile ride not 80 as I thought. There should be some pretty amazing views. I don't even want to discuss vertical travel. This is not gonna be easy.

edit: that last leg through Franconia notch is on a windy rollercoasterish bike path.

UPDATE:

I changed the route, I discoverd Bear Notch Rd. that short cuts just past Kancamangus Pass north through the woods to Bartlett this should shave 20+ miles off the loop and avoid Conway altogether. This road is not on the map but you can see it on the Sat. view, and I know its there based on my White Mountain Guide Topo Maps.

Just got in alittle while ago from the Wentworth team ride, which jrowedc joined us on. we knew we were gonna have some problems from the get-go, when someone showed up on a mountain bike. sure enough, he barely made it up the first hill, and then slowed us down considerably, until i guess he gave up and headed back. anyways, alot of the kids that came on the ride are new freshman, so they have alot to learn, especially when it comes to riding in a group, and staying organized. on the positive end of things, the ride didnt end up going that bad, we did somewhere around 21 miles, with an avg speed of 15.2mph. hopefully everyone learns from the rides which will make for a better time next time out.

sorry to jeff for the group's lack of speed, but i guess we all started somewhere...

No worries. I had a nice ride. Thanks for inviting me. I chased the two guys at the end on Beacon, but couldn't catch them.

Bikes: Ross (studded & fixed for winter)

The Liberty Seguros team will be visiting Belmont Wheelworks on October 2nd, 2-4pm.

Not really a ride, but it might make a good ending point for one.

Bikes: Schwinn Le Tour III (fixed)

Ill be there, but no racing for me. Does anyone have a lockring wrench and chainwhip they can bring? Im gonna follow Jrowedc's advice and switch my rear cog to a 16 instead of the 15... at least until I get my foot fixed up. It takes too much pressure to turn 46 x 15 in my current state. Im having to walk up the smallest of hills just to keep the pressure off the top of my foot.

So MIT track then?

I'll be there. I'm trying to get some other kids there. Henry, you in? Luke, I'll trade you my 16 for your 15.

Yeah, I'll be there. Although I'm considering throwing my bike off a cliff and buying a hybrid, the way my headset has been acting up recently.

3/32 or 1/8? I have a lockring wrench and a 3/32 chainwhip, I think Jeff has a 1/8 chainwhip. I'll be changing up to 44X15 for tonight. I was thinking we could meet up somewhere? for a pre-lube before MIT maybe around 9:30 ish.

Hmm...Im not quite sure. I think its 1/8th. And sorry Rob. I already have a 16 sitting in my bag. I dont think you'd want a Surly cog anyway. Besides...Id like to put it back on once I get out from under the Podiatrists knife.

****, I'll be lucky if we are done with the Career Fair (in the gym next to the track) by 10 pm tonight. I'm home to nap...only slept from 5-6:30 a.m. this morning. Argh. I'll stop by the track just to say wuddip if we get done moving companies' packages at a reasonable time tonight.

I'm not sure i'm going to make it out tonight... I have to spend some time with the lady. Maybe I can convince her to come out tonight so that I can see if my shoulder works again.

I've got dinner plans with a non-cycling friend. Give me a ring to tell me where you are though. Either way I'll be there at 10:30.
