wierd. what is it with florida moving to oregon?

i got the craving for portland again yesterday. it's been all i can think about since then.

I just found out I'm moving to Portland.
I currently am in Salt Lake Utah and have been here for the last 20 years. I have stayed here for the last ten of those years for one reason, my daughter, who lives here with her maternal grandmother. Well today Grandma informed me they are moving to Lincoln City at the end of this month! My father lives in Lake Oswego and I have a few friends that live in Portland.. not exactly sure of what the neighborhood is called, its SE I think, near Hawthorn dist. but not positive. Anyways, I very excited to get the hell out of SLC and to start looking for work and apartment in Portland. So, I'll keep you guys posted on where I end up finding a place and hopefully we can hook up for some riding and whatever.

well, doesn't look like we'll be getting any new velodromes, but the brakeless bill is 3/4 the way of being passed and has a new added addition of allowing cops to use sirens on police bikes, so now in a move of great irony, the police are lobbying the same bill.

when's the next alleycat? nothing on portlandmessenger right now except flat grass track racing and out of town stuff0.

so... portland, I will be in you for the last couple of weeks of june, I'll be working at sellwood cycle.

what are some good places to:
eat?
buy track/fixed parts?
visit?
ride?

eat: i'm assuming you're like me and want good cheap food. if so, ole ole on e. 21st and burnside is good cheap mexican food, laughing planet cafe on 33rd and belmont (+ 4 other locations, google them) is good vegan food with meat options too, not too spendy, carry burritoes, pastries, stuff like that. thai food, the thai food cart on sw 3rd is pretty good, as is thai noon on alberta and sweet basil on e. broadway. sushi takahashi on nw broadway and burnside is good, cheap sushi on a train. the montage, under the east end of the morrison bridge, is good cajun sit-down food and open really late. rocco's pizza on sw 10th and burnside is worth going to. nothing beats stumptown coffee on sw 3rd and pine and you'll run into messengers / hipsters with track bikes there on the weeksdays, tourists on the weekends. otherwise, hawthorne, belmont, nw 21st / 23rd, alberta, sw. broadway, burnside, sandy and east broadway are all generally good streets to cruise for restaurants, cheap and expensive.

track/fixed parts: bike central and veloshop are the bottom line, both downtown in SW. veloshop is behind rocco's pizza on the same block and is more street fixed type stuff, bike central is on SW 1st next to the max line and is more track stuff. dean, the owner of bike central is a hell of a wheel builder and a hell of a dick too. city bikes on se. ankeny is good for cheap, used, utilitarian parts.

visit: come here on the weekdays and see the culture of portland. any major 'culture' street, hawthorne, belmont, nw 21st/23rd, the pearl, alberta, fremont, burnside, etc. is worth seeing if you want to get to know the city and people. sellwood is a nice quiet town. the central eastside industrial area is where burnside skatepark is, it's grimey and i love it. filled with train tracks, broken glass, industrial businesses and the like. someday it'll be the next art / pearl district when the industry has died.

ride: downtown traffic. springwater corridor trail. ne 33rd / fremont hill. mt. tabor. the west hills. the zoo bombing hills.

Moving to Portland in two weeks. Is my bike gonna get stolen?

Freebird: probably not if you use a quality u-lock. I'd recommend a Krypto Mini-Evo, haven't heard of anyone losing a bike to that lock. Leave your bike unlocked on your front porch, locked with a cable, or in the same bike rack every day for awhile, and there's a large possibility it could... also, never lock your bike at the Portland Rock Gym. Ever.

MIN: I run 80 gear inches or 49x16 and I don't have a problem. Some of the larger / steeper hills I'm out of the saddle and standing to pedal up them, but I LOVE this ratio for coming back down, it's an absolute blast. I'd recommend 70-80 for a good all-around town gear inch, unless you really like spinning, than go lower. Spinning/lower ratios have a time and place for me, and that time is the winter.

well shoot on it, i pegged you east coast for some reason. i'm down in eugene, but i'de like to move up there sometime, except i hate your guy's traffic situation.

funny, i'm up in portland and i'll be moving to eugene. i hate your guy's bike scene though, a lot of college kids riding department store bikes and wondering why they get stolen when they lock up with a $10 lock.

i don't care if people ride a road bike, track bike or what as long as they have passion for what they do and that's the truth. anyways, portland isn't so bad as far as traffic, it's the damn downtown construction that's killing me. our streets aren't so smooth either... but what am i saying, i love this city.

p.s. i'm a bit drunk so maybe it's just the ale talking.

I was just in Portland for the Ubuntu Live conference, was not impressed with the city (except for NW streets being alphabetical and numerical) or the bike scene. I'm a Philly boy, always will be. Sorry guys, but it's not for me.
