Thanks for the well wishing everyone! I'll actually miss you crazy guys! I'm in Vancouver right now getting settled in; if the weather holds out I'll probably head north out of the city on monday and then take a ferry to vancouver island and ride to Tofino bay to check that out and then make my way down to victoria where I will grab the ferry into the USA. Fun stuff but I've yet to cycle anywhere! Pics and journal updates are forthcoming but this crappy console has no USB so you'll have to wait. OMG ITS A ******** CLOCK POWERED BY STEAM!!!!

I jsut got back last night from a trial in Windsor. Trial was fun, but it was so nice and I didn't plan enough ahead to bring my bike.
Detroit also looked beautiful from Windsor, but I didn't fall for that trick!

It is big, probably not all but most would agree with Heaps on that, much of the problem folks seemed to have with his streamlining the committee was the lack of consultation with the individuals, groups who were voting members that under Heaps revised Terms would not be, combined with his email to the Planning committee staff that indicated such consultations had taken place when they had not. That, and 4 meetings per year, not a lot of fans for that can be found.
I'm hoping it was just a disconnect on his (Heaps) part, making these changes without consulting affected groups & individuals, certainly leadership is needed and I'm told that's his objective, but sweeping changes made in a draconian manner give many impressions of leadership that is in our society to be feared rather than respected.
In any case, I thought I'd tell ya'll what little I've learned of it from hanging around on Thursday. I missed the important part of the committee meeting. The item was 12th on the agenda, which to me translated into 12noon-2pm, somewhere in there. However Mr. Heaps had a TCC related commitment for Bike Week, the ceremony for the new bike lockers at city hall at 1pm. So his item was knocked out first thing, the schedule changed. Luckily they did alert the 3 deputants slotted to speak about the revised terms and 2 made it there in time to speak. I don't know what was said but it either worked or some of the other councilors there had questions of there own regarding Councilor Heaps move.
When I arrived well after 10oclock (I stopped for breakfast at La Carrera, being as I thought I had time) I encountered Mr Heaps just outside the meeting room door and he was good enough to save me the effort of going in and finding out for myself it was all done with. He advised that the measures had been accepted and would goto Council in early July, I asked if the deputants had been able to speak considering the schedule change and he told me 2 had. So I thanked him & went about my business i.e. nothing, but somewhat pleased I wouldn't be in a committee room for 3 hours.
It didn't make sense to me, that it would goto council, I had thought if the revised terms were accepted by the Planning committee that it was a done deal & Mr. Heaps left me with the impression it was a done deal but that didn't tell the whole story. I learned later Councilor Vaughn had made recommendations for amendments to the revised terms, which I guess is why it's going to council for more than just a report, by the time it gets there the Terms will be either amended to address the recommendations or be presented with a report on the recommendations by Vaughn.
So while the Terms of Reference were accepted as is these questions must be addressed before it's a done deal with the council. That's good! Actually I love it, maybe a little streamlining will be helpful. It seemed to me after discussing it with many folk down there that it may all work out just fine, that Heaps is open to compromise despite the fact he appears to give no ground at all in his response to Cam and others, and that there are councilors who will facilitate what many see as needed compromises to Mr. Heaps proposed changes. I'd watch for Martins report on biketoronto.ca as it'll be hella more informed and he may by then know how the consultation between concerned individuals, groups & Mr. Heaps office will go down.
Perhaps he just screwed up, perhaps it was all calculated and an amended Terms of reference is the actual objective, certainly with such huge changes there is a lot of ground to give while still having a profound impact. Either way unless he's addled I don't think he'll fail to consult with the community again, that didn't get him anything but negative attention esp. the communications he sent that were picked up on by members of the TCC.
