Dang - I'm actually starting to seriously Consider selling my 50cm Ciocc frame ( https://www.flickr.com/photos/timichango/tags/miko/ ) as I'm coming to the painful conclusion, after riding my other bike (53 cm) for the last 3 months, that the poor thing's just a mite too small, and I can't get remotely comfortable on it

On that note, I visited High Park Cycle last weekend, and met Jan (Gian? John?)... seems like an interesting guy to deal with. Anyone have any advice? He's got such a museum of goodies in there that I'm bound to be able to find something nice that fits, but how is he on trade-ins?

holy shiz.
I totalled the car last night.
I got smashed on the front driver side by some crazy ass lady driving a hachback civic and she proceeded to drive away even after her airbags deployed.
I guess i'm fine... woke up with stiff neck, and tight chest. blah blah. at least there isn't any bleeding or broken bones.
anyways, I think i'm going to spend the day taking apart the car to use the back passenger seats as my new tv sofa.
playing GT4 while buckled into my seatbelt is gonna be GREAT!
and as for high park cycles.
the owner is a grumpy ol' b'tard and you'll have to fight him to get him to sell you stuff for a reasonable amount of money.
wait till he lets you into the back, you'll pee your pants and immediately aquire photographic memory, guaranteed.

As for high park cycles. yeah, the guy has a veritable museum of parts and frames up in his rafters but good god he can be difficult to deal with. on a good day he's a nice and will take trades and stuff but if he's in a bad mood he can be a surly old coot. if you're looking to trade in old parts / frames i'd say sell them on ebay or craigslist because he won't give you any sort of reasonable deal. his frames seem expensive to me, but then again they are pretty high-end.
personally, i've found his frustrating to deal with (he built me a wheel that kept popping spokes) and so i don't go there anymore but you never know, he might have changes his ways.
you'd probably get a better deal (and service) at cavern.

Sweet goddamn... glad you're alllright! No doubt she's going to make a claim - no way for the cops to track the hit-and-run through her insurance claim based on her car model? Someone needs to take that idiot off of the road.
Heh - detached Honda badges... In 2000 me and some friends were on the way back from the Montreal jazz fest in the summer, and the driver, a guy we worked with who had one arm, fell asleep at the wheel and put us into the ditch in Kingston going about 130km/h... car flipped and flew about 30 metres upside-down, and then promptly caught on fire a few seconds after we got out of it.
I've still got the (H) badge from the hood of the Civic we were in at the time... it's my lucky charm in a way, because we all should have been fried pulp. Hold on to that thing!

Agreed - I got the impression that dealing with him is subject to his moodiness on a given day. Problem is, I'd like to get a frame of equivalent quality and italian-ness
There's something about an Italian bike built in SLX that makes it difficult to replace with anything other than an equally pretty Italian bike in SLX, and I imagine that Mr. Grumpy's got loads of 'em. I also have no idea how to price this thing - I've seen'em go built up with campy record stuff for up to $1200 on ebay, but I wouldn't begin to know how to price it as a frame and fork - another factor that inclines me to try to work a straight trade for something equivalent that fits. Wishful thinging maybe

A few years back I was poking around in there and saw a 70'sish chrome track bike hanging up. It was a french bike I think. A decent frame....nothing special...Maillard hubs...Stronglight cranks. He wanted $1000! for it. I laughed my way out the door. As I was walking out I witnessed him charge a lady and her child $10 to put air in the kids tires. Some are of the opinion it is some kind of Mafia front as he never seems to want to sell anything.
Heh - yeah, when I was in there he was quoting me a price in the $800-$900 for a used but decent rossin track frame & fork, which seemed a bit steep.
He definitely didn't seem like selling stuff was a big priority, and I couldn't really gauge if it was because he just likes his bikes and can't bear to part with them, or if he's just unable to charge anything but the going price in the 80s. Which is kind-of why I was wondering if he'd keen-up to a trade, and if he'd give me good value for my frame, or just try to fleece me.
P.S. Cavernmech - you built that yellow wheel on the Ciocc for me, and It's the best wheel I've ever owned... absolutely atom-bomb-proof. I learned to build wheels after that, and it's been my reference wheel for figuring out spoke tension since I can't afford a tensiometer.... *pluck.... RIIIIINGGGGG*

I'm actually afraid of squarshing it with my fat desk-jockey arse. I had a wipeout on my other bike, a Ciocc-built Concorde that's also in SLX, and I managed to f*ck the fork alignment a bit and had to have Malcolm at biseagal get it running straight again. I've been thinking about getting a new fork built up in Columbus Max, just to offset some of the paranoia...

i just thought of another option for you: if you're in the junction neighbourhood, keep riding along annette street towards high park ave. there is a guy on the south side there that has the outside of his house lined (and i mean piled deep) with used frames, parts, etc. he's usually out there on spring summer evenings trading with the neighbourhood kids; i've cruised by and seen some half decent frames there. can't hurt to have a look, if for nothing more than the joy of scrounging.

i noticed that urbane just got in some sweet marinoni laminated toe straps with the buckle pads and all (like the old campy ones). makes me want to switch to clips and straps just to use those babies. it's payday, someone talk me out of buying them (i just bought a new ti seatpost yesterday!).
