Put my bike on the trainer this morning, and did my first twenty minute ride. It's going to be a LONG winter! :-)

Also,
Thanks for the ride today!
Yeah, unfortunately I don't have a tv in the basement. so it's ipod music only. :-(
trainers ... how are they for noise? i'm in an apartment and don't want to anoy my downstairs neighbours, especially since they are pretty quiet themselves ... should i get a mat to put under it when i pick one up?
i'd prefer to do rollers but my kitten would probably be a little too curious with it

I too have a fluid trainer (Cyclops Fluid2), and I'd hardly call it 'silent'. I think a lot of it depends on what kind of surface you're riding on... if you're in a typical older Toronto house I can nearly guarantee they'll be able to hear it below you. My old neighbors could as I asked them about it after I got mine. Since I was doing most of my riding early in the morning I just moved it out into the front of the apartment since their bedrooms were at the back of the house. I never got any complaints.. *Shrug* I've wondered about those mats as well as I think most of the noise is just from the thing vibrating on the floor. That might be why yours seems quiet, iherald, if you have it on a concrete basement floor. It also depends on how fast you're going though. If I'm just warming up/cooling down or going for a small ring spin, it's not too loud. But doing intervals can get pretty loud spinning at 90+ rpm in say 52x18.
As a side note, my cats are pretty scared of my trainer, but you can't count on kittens to exhibit 'normal' behavior.

yeah the cyclops fluid2 is what i was thinking
i'm in a high rise (unfortunately), so the floors are pretty thick and concrete (i guess)
i think i'd have to use a mat, but it should ok, probably no worse than the sound of vacuuming

Well, I finally painted the Miele frame and Mariposa fork that I intend to turn into a fixie. The colour is, "John Deere Green." Now all the bike needs is everything else, which I hope to keep cheap. I'm thinking Alex rims with Formula hubs for the wheels, something cheap for the crank, and perhaps a Cane Creek headset?
Brad, as per our discussion today, I could spatter some white paint over the green before I clear coat it; give it that early 90's feel.

Our idiot cats give the trainer a wide berth, but I wouldn't trust a kitten around it. Little dudes get into everything so it's probably best they get locked up in another room (avec toys and/or treats) when you're working out.
