An Open Letter to Mother Nature:

"Dear *****,

Are you for real?

We know it was wrong of us to stand idly by and let Al Gore show all those explicit photographs of what you’re going to look like 30 years from now. But seriously – ease off. You’re all powerful and you’re in a really pissy mood. We get it already. But enough with the apocalyptic downfalls of snow mixed with ice pellets mixed with freezing rain mixed with snow pellets mixed with the frozen tears of sedentary Maclean’s columnists who just can’t lift the shovel even one more goddamn time.

What’s eating you? Is it us? Listen, we all still have regrets about those 1970s commercials for Chiffon margarine – the ones with the catchphrase, “It’s not nice to fool Mother Nature.” The special effects were cheesy at best and some of those woodland animals really phoned in their performances. (You call that emoting, raccoon?) And yes, we bear a collective responsibility for failing to punish Hollywood for callously having you portrayed in films by not only Phyllis Diller but also Bette Midler. Next time, Scarlett Johansson in a fig leaf. We promise.

But you need to lighten up. You are quickly becoming our least favourite anthropomorphized figure since Squealer from Animal Farm and Jack Black. We know it’s not nice to fool you – but there’s nothing in there that says we can’t totally punch you in the face.

Sincerely,
Everyone"

Many years ago now I was doing some work for a Caribbean Telecom startup and they had their eyes on Caribtel.com - some guy had owned it for a couple of years but never had a site up so I got in touch with him to see what he wanted for it. He sounded suuuuuuper excited that anyone was even interested in it and said he'd call me back with a price.

$50,000, he says. I told him right away that my clients wouldn't be interested in the slightest so he asked what they had in mind? I said "I don't know, maybe $1,000? Give or take?" to which he replies "well maybe we can meet in the middle?" I just started laughing - dude, where the **** is the middle between those two figures that anyone is going to be happy with? $25,000 is $24,000 more than they've got and $25,000 less than you want... Some people's children, eh?

Similar story: When my old band was releasing our first studio album we still didn't have a proper website set up. So I threw something together, but our guitarist (also an internerd) was supposed to register the domain. When he tried to register it, someone else had gotten it ONE DAY EARLIER. Of course, little did we know that he procrastinated until AFTER we had everything pressed/printed/shrinkwrapped/etc and the booklet had the domain in it. D'oh!

We contacted the owners, but it was some startup and they weren't willing to let go of it without at least a few thousand bucks, which wasn't worth it to us. We wound up just using a different address and hoping people would just use web-search and find us (nerdy aside: Google hadn't taken over yet ).

Best part? The start-up never ever launched. The domain was up for grabs again a couple years later (but we had gone our separate ways by then).

What time is the ride tonight, 8 or 9pm? I have the camera with me, as well as lights! (And I may've been in the front pack, but I did have lights on )

Bikeforums being blocked off at work *really* sucks the big one I have to remotely login to my home machine to get access, which is a righteous pain in the ass.

I just watched the Mercer thing, it was good. Funny for those who ride and entertaining for those who don't.

So unfortunately the On One other doofer suxors. It adds essentially no tension to my chain whatever. Apparently the drop out on my old Bianchi is shaped differently than more contemporary bikes. Nuts.

What may work is to increase both the chainring and cog size to try to get the chain to end up lower from the chainstay and still maintain an offroad gear ratio. Anyone carry a 22 tooth cassette cog?

Jamie Lidell's got more soul than any other skinny white dude on the planet. Plus his videos are usually pretty awesome.

Phil makes 22t fixed cogs

PSA Rogers cable internet customers - be aware that they are planning to charge you for any bandwidth usage over your monthly plans service cap. This means combined upload AND download. The charge is going to be $2 - $5 per extra GB.

!!!!

****ing ripoff rogers.

I need a cassette cog though. Surley makes one apparently too. Damn this bike is starting to cost me more than I wanted....

Is this something you're putting on a multispeed freehub with spacers? Why not just bust up a discarded cassette? the 22T isn't gonna be worn out.

Yes so that would work as well if anyone has one. I don't have an old cassette to break up.

Even with a perfect chainline I find Hyperglide cogs like to jam and derail when the going gets rough. It is large tho so might not be a prob. After using cassette cogs on S.S. for so long I really appreciate S.S. specific ones...they run sooo much smoother.

As an aside...can't you run the tensioner up or down? There must be a way to get it to work.

You may want to call C.T. - we've got something around that size in the display case (might be a 20T though). I can't quite remember but I saw it today when I was fishing around.

You run this particular tensioner up. It would work fine if I could tension down. It does seem kind of odd that there isn't enough play room to get it to work with my existing setup. On one suggested my hanger may be abnormal and that could be as it's a circa '88 bike. I'll stop by CT tomorrow, Mike. Going with a 20 is fine as it'll let me run a slightly smaller chain ring which would be handy.

I have a cassette in pieces. I'll go and see if it has a 22 cog, and if so,what shape its in.

Edit: cogs nasty and all shark tooth.
