btw. beware the curb. Typical for this time of year, but there's SO much trash/metal bits/glass/etc on the street near the curbs right now. I got a flat tire on College this morning, and of course I didn't have any tools/etc with me. D'oh! Had to walk up to Harbord and harass Brad/Derrek (sp).

Have any of you East-end peeps noticed whether the paved Don trail is still an icefield?

+1 on the curb watching, was pretty horrible out there this morning - I'm guessing the street sweepers got a piece of the action and spread it all into mid-lane territory.

Anyone have any recommendations on cantis? I've been eyeing Avid Shorty 4s and some cheap Tektro "Oryx" ones (would like them to be black if possible) working to my ever decreasing budget I only want the front for now, but don't mind a set for possible SS riding.

Bikes: '08 Kona JTS & Riviera (?) Sport converted Fixed Gear

I trekked out to La Bicicletta today, and they sent me right back home. "Sorry, we don't have anything in your price range. Leave your name and number just in case..."
Decided to test ride a Specialized Tricross Sport at Broadway Cycle and it felt good.
Right now I'm stuck between a Tricross Sport from Broadway or a Kona JTS from Sweet Pete's. A guy at Cycle SOlutions (they carry both Specialized and Kona) said he'd go with the JTS if he had to choose...

Nobody has a 60cm frame in stock to test ride. If I test drove a 58, but ordered a 60, do you think that would work...?

I have these. $25 for each set at Urbane.

Yeah, the garbage is nuts out there. Tthe thing I notice most are the cigarette butts. It is really bad, there must be a way to get people to throw them into receptacles, has anyone seen something like that (or another solution) in other cities?

There used to be small metal box-like containers in front of some buildings but they've disappeared in recent years.

+another 1 on the curb junk.. add a flat and a 2km walk home to my ride report from before. Plus I couldn't find my spare tube or patch kit.

At least the wind was awesome going east!

I'm taking my SS (well, dingle-speed) cross bike to Jet Fuel just so I have my offroad gear to bail out with if the wind is too brutal heading back home later.

edit: on second thought, it just started to hail outside. As if the wind wasn't bad enough. I'm wussing out.

It may comfort you to know that cigarette butts are the #1 most littered item on the face of the planet

Very very very nice. How do you like the Campy? I have never used it but I was thinking that my Ciocc really deserves that grey Centaur 10-speed group, it is just damned expensive compared to Shimano.

Centaur is damned expensive? I thought it was pretty cost-competitive with 105.

Nice ride, Keith. Let me know if you're interested in doing any group rides or whatnot.

^^ I always thought Centaur was Ultegra level, whereas 105 matched with Veloce.

Does anyone know if the Paddy Wagon can be had as a frameset?

I'd say the SRAM stuff is on par (Centaur/Rival, Chorus/Force, Record/Red) but Shimano's fallen a bit out of synch. Ultegra SL is okay but I'd probably just go Ultegra w/ a Dura-Ace crank if I wanted the same weight savings (at a cheaper price, too).

if you felt a bit cramped on the 58 then a 60 should work for you. you can always play around with different stems for sizing. i'm assuming you had lots of standover clearance on the 58...

BTW my vote would be for the kona from sweet pete's. just my $0.02.

Yeah, I suppose Centaur isn't that expensive, there is a complete group, new, on eBay for about $400 but the one that I want is the gun-metal grey that was produced in limited release for 2005/2006. It looks nice on this Marinoni:

speaking of cross frames, i seem to have developed a crack in mine, right at the seatpost binder bolt/seatstay weld junction which seems to be causing my seatpost to slip incessantly. i'm assuming it's not a great idea to ride a cracked frame. how easy a fix would it be if i took it to a frame builder or would it be easier to get a new frame?

Is the tube cracked or is it just the binder? If the tube itself is still good I would suggest having the whole binder assembly removed by Malcolm and install a separate clamp and binder. If its down the slot of the tube it's gonna be trickier.

From the people I have talked to a smaller volume is probably better. I have the Schwalbe Little Alberts...622x64 (look at the real #'s on a tire..not the generic 2.1, 2.25 etc...a much better guide for volume) Johnny has rocked them as has Maki....all have been super pleased. The consensus is that being a 29 you get more contact patch anyways. Running big volume is heavier which is a bigger issue with 29 as they are harder to get spinning. I would suggest at most 2.25 but you will probably be happier in the long run with something smaller.
